That's probably about the coolest Hemi car, the 68 Roadrunner. A bare bones car with nothing but tons of horsepower and torque ready to destroy the skinny little bias ply tires it was born with. And usually the original Hemi cars were purchased for serious racing vs. daily driver and this is why a lot of them are found with evidence of racing mods like this one.

I'm old enough to remember when these cars were new, (but not old enough to have bought one new). There was a Chrysler / Plymouth dealer across the street from where I grew up, and I was constantly checking out the details on the cars for my model building endeavors. One thing I remember from Mopar of that era is that 'If you didn't pay for it, you didn't get it'. The Hemi Superbird they had on the lot FOREVER was a 4 speed car with manual steering and manual drum brakes. It didn't actually sell until 1976, about 4 months before I got my driver's license. Always amazed me that you could buy a '200MPH car' with brakes that were good for maybe 80mph.

The list of options shown are late 1968 model year options. The 3.55 Sure-Grip, viscous fan drive, heavy duty radiator and fan shroud were not originally available on the 68 Road Runner. They were made available after the 68 1/2 Dodge Superbee came out with those options.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
That’s interesting. I will have to check for a date on the data book. We were fairly sure it was printed early. It makes no mention of the dress up options that became available later in the year on Roadrunners.
@BrandonLeeBrown
@BrandonLeeBrown 6 месяцев назад
@@DeadDodgeGarage Yeah, I have a Sept 1967 RR brochure and the front shows the 3.55 SG rear and HD radiator as options, but the list of options at the back of the brochure don't show them as options. In the 68 Superbee the HD radiator and fan option was $15, but is rare with the 383. I have seen 68 RR's and SB's with factory 3.55 gears, but the RR's were late 68's. 68 SB's had carpet and the RR was supposed to have the rubber floor covering, but because the RR was so popular, they ran out of that started putting carpet in some RR's. I had a 69 SB with the rubber floor covering, though I don't know why. It was a White Hat Special, with a vinyl roof, Ram Charger hood and 3.91 rear, cheaper than those options separately. The brochure says HD rear springs, but those came in police cars, taxi's and station wagons and were heavier than Hemi rear springs. The 69 manual transmission 383's got special rear springs with a half leaf on each side, to act as traction bars. That's different from Hemi manual rear springs with two half leaves on the right side only. Some 68 brochures show Hemi diameter torsion bars and HD rear springs, but I think they are 383 torsion bar diameter and regular V8 rear springs. Years later, Mopar sold the HD police rear springs as service replacements for the performance cars. The HD radiator option is extremely rare with the 383 without AC. The 3.55 option did show up late in the 68 model year.

Someone needs to check all the numbers.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
Dayam. That’s nuts. All of the body numbers are verified to match the tag which matches vin, matches title. Tag matches options found on car (essentially none.) So while there could still be possibilities there, I can tell you that all of the legal numbers are absolutely present and correct. We wouldn’t have bought it if that wasn’t the case.

Well, this is the second time I've ever seen a HEMI RR with no front torque boxes.... The first I saw was many years ago at a show at Don Garlits place. He puts on a huge Mopar show every year around Thanksgiving. Anyway, that car actually looked "to me", as if it had been a hemi/(re-tagged), car.. I had no proof and didn't really care that much, but one of the guys there was saying that a handful of hemi cars made it out of the factory without the torque boxes as they had made a short run on the parts. I was told, the parts were to be sent to the dealers who sold them and the dealer was to weld them on... I don't know if I believe that either, but hey, who the hell knows!!!!!
@DeadDodgeGarage

I think that's because it is a 68 automatic Hemi car. The E-body Hemi's got them with automatics. Mopar used to sell the heavy duty pinion snubber plate as a Hemi manual transmission part too. I doubt the dealers were taking any liabilities by welding on chassis parts.

@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
The heavy duty brakes were intentionally manually adjusted. That may well have been for ultimate control over brake drag. I’m not sure on that. In later years, there were both manual and self adjusting 11” drums. I thought they all had two slots because they’re the same backing plate side for side, except for parking cable hole on the back. If it’s for pulling the arm back that makes sense, but it’s news to me. Haha.

You're speaking my language on this. There's no secret sauce in a Hemi car, a 340 car, etc. Just collection of parts, most of them not at all exotic (except that engine). A couple comments... The drag racing types wanted drums because they were lighter and didn't have the slight drag that older disc setups do. If these cars came standard with discs you know some guys would have converted to drums. Also, didn't these get a standard 3 speed wiper because the 2 speed motor wouldnt fit with the Hemi? Or am i thinking of something else?

Snow angels in a dog park? That's what I've been doing wrong all this time. I was a bout to comment on torque boxes and ask, I've never actually seen a b-body hemi anywhere i could look under itI just didn't know,

I believe you are mistaken on one item. That car if it is a true hemi RR would have came standard with a Dana 60 rear axle, not an 8 3/4.
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 5 месяцев назад
No. 😁 only a Hemi four speed would have a Dana. This car was raced with a Dana, which was removed to reinstall a factory correct 8 3/4.

What was the last year, or could you ever, buy a crate 426 Hemi off of The Chrysler corporation? I’d assume they must have sold them Incase someone blew the Hemi in their car…
@DeadDodgeGarage
@DeadDodgeGarage 6 месяцев назад
Oh you sure could - and they were still supposedly available when I bought my ‘66 Charger in 2013. I’m not sure how many were really still out there at that time, and they have since gone away.

@@DeadDodgeGarage Thx for the info! They must have gone for a pretty penny when the stock started to run low. I’m asking this out of curiosity (no, I don’t have one!), but how much would a still running 60’s-71 Hemi engine go for today? PS-Love your Channel!
