Scotty i have a 1988 chevy camaro z28..i can't turn the wheel left or right. No power steering at all. I just got the car for a project

Hi there Mr. Kilmer I have been wanting to get a sports/muscle car and I like the V8's. I've tried the mustang and the ergonomics just aren't for me and I don't particularly like the Camaro because of its usability is non-existent so that leaves me with the Challenger. I'm wondering if a manual Challenger RT (5.7l) is a decent vehicle? I'm looking at 2015 models and up. And I ask this because I know how you feel about FCA which I have to agree with you on many points.

@@sedric6153 well it doesn't look like it has a rack and pinion but definitely has a power steering system..and i just found my problem at least one that is..dam pump doesn't have a belt..lol

I remember the stories my daddy told me about his road runner. He said he raced that car slot on Friday and Saturday nights. He said he would whoop any car that raced him, untel..... a guy in a 68 chevelle came up to challenge him. He accepted, they raced and he got beat. Lol! But that's my story about a Plymouth Road Runner. I miss my daddy telling me those stories about his high school years in the 70s. RIP Daddy I miss you more everyday. 😔

@@dcents5458 283 was the fastest reving engine next to a Buick 215cid all aluminum v-8 that Land Rover bought for a song in '72ish cuz GM thought the V-8 was dead... They never let GM have it back. I wanted to put one in my '62 Austin Healey... Fun fun....

It is a sweet car, but it has been modified, the bumpers have been painted and shaved for example. I have a 74 roadrunner with a 440.

It is rare, I was born in '69. My first car that I owned was a '69 Pontiac GTO convertible which I bought when I was 19 years old for $4000. I'm happy to say that my youngest son, now 18 is a real gear head. His cars of choice. 60's/ early 70's muscle cars. I find it fascinating to see these young guys into cars and not their portable pocket computers that can make phone calls.

In 1969 I worked at a little Chysler Plymouth Dealership in Missouri. One morning the owner said it was time to bring in the 1970's to the showroom from the sales manager's barn where they were stored out of public sight. I got to drive the Road Runner. Orange with black stripe, black interior. Hurst Shifter with 4 on the floor. 383 ci. Wide tires all around. I was 22 years old and was in heaven. What a beast. Sounded like a wild animal.

I had a 71 with the 383 H.P. nothing but Fun, that thing would burn rubber all day, even the neighbors enjoyed hearing it light up the pavement, they told me so ! Love Mopar !

I dunno. I hadn't thought about him like that. He had a great presentation, knew his car, and muscle cars in general. Hey, we could fix him right up! All he needs is a white T shirt with the sleeve rolled up tight, and a hard pack of Marlboro tucked in there. Shades, and comb that hair back with Brylcreem. Now that's cruising!

My very first car was a 1968 Road Runner! I was 16 at the time (61 now) and bought it for $150. It had the 383 with 4sp transmission. However the car itself had the optional Hemi suspension and heavy duty brakes. The previous owner beat it to near death though. lol! I had an accident (someone pulled out in front of me) and the insurance totaled it. But I was able to "buy" it back from them. It lived on for quite a while, but there was another accident and it ended up getting scrapped. I still have the original 4sp transmission, and the original cast iron bell housing "out in the shed". I also still have the original "beep beep" horn that I still use today in my daily driver. Thank you Scotty! This video brought back some fond memories. ;-)

same same... but the 383 bored/stroked to 412, a BEAST!! picked it up for 500 bucks in '85, needed a steering box and other stuff.

@@BuzzLOLOL I did for a while. I put it into a 1966 Belvedere with a 727 auto trans and transformed it into a (sort of) "Franken-GTX" lol! It was a "sleeper". I was made an offer I couldn't refuse and sold it.

Maybe another answer to your question, "Why are we not still talking about this car" is that there is a scarcity of intelligent people with excellent communicative skills who have taken the time to become knowledgeable about them. Im 20 and i remeber the day i told my dad i would never work on a car " they are too complicated" i said. Then i learned about the cost of labor now i work on all my vehicles and encourage others to do the same. With such a vast wealth of knowledge so easily accessible there really is no excuses

Graham is absolutely right, the Roadrunner is an under-appreciated muscle car. Definitely worthy of keeping or restoring to good working order. They were fun cars to drive, especially if you had the 4 on the floor.

@J P that is actually a true statement! I had a 1970 GTX (which is basically a roadrunner with a standard 440 in it) which would go as fast as you wanted. A couple of times I wanted to see how fast it would go and I chickened out at 140 mph. Trying to stop from anything over 60 mph was almost impossible because it had drum brakes which faded really really bad. Yes, you had to plan ahead!

@@@markkauffman6184 @J P Been driving and maintaining a 68 Roadrunner for nearly ten years now, sounds like your brake lines were full of air or your brake shoes were misadjusted. Brake fade only comes under the hottest and most strenuous long term driving conditions in old mopars and a simple heat shield made of a license plate under the master cylinder can cure it. Almost nobody knows how to properly maintain and adjust drum brakes anymore and there weren't exactly a lot of people that knew how to do it right back then either. You would (and still) often see cars that someone tried to change shoes or a wheel cylinder in that didn't bleed and adjust things properly after putting it all back together and thus the car stops like sh!t with brand new brake parts in it.

Excellent video! It is good to see this young man's enthusiasm for such a cool car. (He's not at home playing videogames!) This proves there is definitely hope for the younger generation. My first car was an old 1968 Plymouth Valiant, which I bought for $450 in 1980. Not exactly what one would call a cool car, but at age 19 it was my pride and joy. Good memories.

I remember the Road Runner, The Satellite (of which most police departments in that period of time used) and the Dodge Daytona with the hugely elevated rear spoiler, being among the coolest cars of my childhood. They had them in all kinds of wild colors too like deep purple and mustard yellow. We lived right down the street from a Plymouth dealership in Beaverton Oregon, right off Canyon Road. I used to ride my bike there and check out all the awesome cars they had. Brings back lots of great memories. =)

Back in the day we had a 1971 Roadrunner. Sassy grass green. 383 with 4 speed manual. I learned how to drive stick shift in this car. The horn with 2 presses would actually sound: MEEP! MEEP! What a fun time!!!

My first new car ever was a 1969 Roadrunner. Color,sunfire yellow. 383,Hurst 4 speed. I loved that car. I bought it for $2803. It was still going in 1989. A mechanic in my home town bought it from my daughter. She had tracked down and bought it for me,but i had to have an automatic and was dealing on a handicapped van,lift,hand controls etc. Loved that fun car!

I grew up with these cars and still cannot get used to using liters to refer to engine displacement. Anyway that 425 advertised horse power was way underrated as a lot of muscle cars were back then.

Had a neighbor had a 71' model with a 383 4 speed. Traded it for a 72' pinto . I was 9 years old and knew deep down it just didn't seem right .

Because back in those days nobody cared about those cars. Chrysler then as now manufactured garbage. Nobody thought of Chrysler products as muscle cars until The Dukes of Hazzard. The cars look nice but they are garbage. Then and now

I'm a millennial myself, as a child in the early 00's, I remember sitting and riding in my dad's '71 roadrunner that's he's owned since a teen. He's since sold it due to financial but we've been searching for another ever since. They just ain't cheap

Dad gave me a 69' road runner 440 4 speed when I turned 16 years old that he bought new for $3800. I still have it with all the original paperwork. Lots of good times in the car. In high school there were millions of dollars worth of cars in the parking lot and we didn't even know it then. One guy had a super bird along with others original shelby Mustangs, ect.

I'm an old Mopar guy now....but back in the 80's.....I was just like this kid, but in a 68 Charger....my son is 25, and has a 72 RR...I'm a lucky man to have had the fun I've had. I thank our Military and thank everyone who protects our way of life.

Its funny when people talk about Camaro and Mustang as muscle cars...Both were Pony cars, not so much of a muscle car. Also, Plymouth paid Warner Bros for the logo, not the Road runner name per say... Even the horns on the Road Runners are purple and have the Road Runner logo on them.

While some anemic engines were available in Mustangs and Camaros the big block 390 and 428 Ford engines and 396 and 427 Chevy engines had competitive "muscle". There was also a limited run of Boss 429 Mustangs which were the Demons of their day.

I was thinking the same thing. Love this Road Runner and the guy knows some history, but that car is a behemoth compared to a Mustang or Camaro, which were pony cars as much as they were muscle cars. To me, a muscle car is a two-door sport coupe version of an intermediate body on a 64-72 car, and particularly, but not only, GM A-body cars like the Le Mans, Chevelle, Olds Cutlass and Buick Skylark. These cars were made in sedan and wagon styles but performance motors and graphics and other special options were for the sport coupes; the SS, the 442, the GTO, etc. Meanwhile, Mustangs and Camaros came in base models with anemic 6-cylinder engines, so not every "pony car" is a "muscle car."

A Camaro or Mustang can be defined as a muscle car, sure, but more specifically they are pony cars. Would you define a 1982 Mustang Fox Body 5.0 as a muscle car? Under a broad definition, a muscle car could be defined as any car with a big V-8, front-engine, rear wheel drive. But that would tend to include too many cars to really mean anything, because almost every American car in the 60's had a V-8. The biggest V-8s went into the biggest, fattest, longest cars, wagons, and trucks too. To me the term muscle car should be more narrowly defined. If you drop a 383 stroker into a 1985 Chevy S-10 is it a muscle car? No! A typical Chevelle lineup might have 5 or 6 engine options, from a 250ci inline 6 to to a 195hp 283 V-8, a 300hp 327, to a 375hp big block 396. Are they ALL muscle cars? No! I prefer a narrower definition of muscle car personally. Of course a lighter Camaro or Mustang with a top engine will beat most Roadrunners, it's a simple matter of weight per horsepower. Do I think the Road Runner is a muscle car? Absolutely. Is it a pony car? No, and as such he shouldn't be making comparisons between a Road Runner and pony cars.

I had a 69 Road Runner, 383 Ram Air and everything you say about this car was ditto for mine. I had a factory 410 rear end so the car had limited top end. But it would snap your neck off getting to red line. I followed it with a 70 Dodge Charger 440 R/T but the Plymouth was the REAL muscle car.

Back in the early 70s, my dream car was a 72 Roadrunner. I thought they just looked so cool. I test drove a 71 RR with a 440, but couldn't get it because my Dad wouldn't co-sign for the loan. A couple years later I settled for a 74 RR. I loved that car, but still preferred the 71-72 years. Oh, and the 74, only had a 318.

Mostly agree with the young man’s assessments; what he missed is the mindset of us old guys growing up in that era - there was NO internet, NO cable TV, NO cell phones, NO personal computers, and certainly NO SOCIAL MEDIA! We watched cartoons and slapstick comedy on limited broadcast TV channels Saturday morning from toddlerhood into early teens. They influenced us heavily. And the “Road Runner “ was my all time favorite; hence my longing to own one of these beasts. But when I had the chance, Jimmy Carter’s pitiful economic strategy with OPEC quadrupled gasoline costs so I was stuck buying a used 4 banger just to afford to drive anywhere! Still think about the pristine ‘69 copper Road Runner w/ suped up 383 auto, that I had to pass up - oh, and insurance costs also were a deterrent for poor country boys like me.

I had a base 72 Road Runner 340 4 spd 3:17 rear end. Dropped the front end three inches (with torsion bars very easy to do), added the best shocks I could find ...it handled great especially above 120mph! That body was designed with NASCAR in mind and once you dropped the front, the wedge shape would squat down on the suspension as the speed went up. Left a lot of Camaros and Mustangs behind on the highway. Unfortunately as was mentioned OPEC and insurance companies pretty much killed off the muscle cars. By the time 72 rolled around they were already hard to insure unless you were old and married. Manufacturers were underrating the HorsePower to get a break. BTW parts are not hard to find unless they are RoadRunner specific. Remember every Road Runner has five or six Satelite siblings with the same body. Just my two cents..

Nice to see young people getting into the car culture. They probably like the appeal of steel and horsepower and no electronics. I spend most of my day around computers, smartphones, electric cars and other vehicles that are loaded with driver aids and things that stop you from having fun. This weekend I got to attend the Roadster Show near Los Angeles and seeing all the old cars, trucks, hotrods and all the performance parts made of steel, aluminum in chrome and black, I do love todays high tech but it was nice to see the good old stuff. Enjoy your car.

My dad had a 71 GTX 440 4spd, and he said it was one of his favourite cars of that era...well at least for speed! Lol But always joked that you could hear a Mopar from far away just by the sound of the clunking doors when people were getting in or out! I guess they were more about power, and less about the quality of the interiors and tinny sound to the bodies.

Yeah unfortunately they were really all low end,low quality cars. Too bad. You know damn well if they had a clue they would of ended up so collectable they would of built them far better. Perhaps not though,I mean they were competing to attract young male drivers against fords mustangs and chevy's comaro's and they did a good job with putting style of affordability with a low price tag over quality so I suppose they are what they are because of their time so. Anyway,who cars today about any of them being reliable and quality modes of transportation? None of us lol so I guess they did just fine in the end.

The guy says the Roadrunner was introduced to "bring the muscle car back to its roots" and that's not exactly true. The first "muscle car" produced was the Pontiac GTO in 1964, the first Roadrunner came out only 4 years later in 1968 and it's well known purpose was to make "the muscle car" affordable and accessible to a much wider demographic. The point of the Roadrunner was to offer a stripped down low cost low weight car that anybody could afford. Things that came standard in other cars like a radio, carpet, heat/ac etc. were extra cost options in a Roadrunner. The car sold for only $2800 bucks brand new when a Cadillac from the same year cost about $5000. The introduction of the wildly styled Roadrunner with it's cartoon character decals, eye popping color options and "no frills all go" attitude was a completely new direction that no other manufacturer had taken but many would soon follow. I would say the Roadrunner was more of a revolution than just a "return to the roots".

i can't tell you how bizarre it is watching some kid doing a youtube video explaining what a plymouth is, like it's some kind of babylonian chariot from a museum. a lot of gen X watching this channel bought 70's muscle cars as their first vehicles in the 80's. how could any american old enough to drive not know what a plymouth was? i knew what a desoto was when i was a kid. if you watch reruns of old tv shows and movies, don't you know what any of those old cars are?

It's tough. As a young person, they just don't show up in the media that we watch. There's an ocean of knowledge on these cars that we just don't get exposed to. My goal is to try and learn and share what I can so that we do know what a Plymouth is! :)

I wasn't a fan of the colour at first but as the video went on I found myself liking the colour as the light shines around the car. Fantastic to see people my age still into muscle cars ( real cars in my opinion lol ). Keep up the good work bud and keep up with the vids Scotty :)

I am 63 years old and I am Muscle Car all the way. I have lived in the South most of my life and live hear in the Carolinas today. A little town called Kannapolis. I have owned since 1979 my 70 Challenger and in 1981 my 70 GTX. My sons are gem Xers and car guys through and through. Both have multiple Japanese hardware. An 83 2jz Conquest. 92 3000 GT SL. Evolll right hand drive. But they do have modern American Muscle 2006 Magnum SRT-8, a 2012 Charger SRT-8 and a 2015 Charger R/T. My grand boys are 6 and 4 respectfully. They are car guys too. Thanks for the video and know down south the Muscle Car will live on for more years😛

That brought back memories of my youth! I bought a Road Runner exactly like that. It was my first new car. I was working on an off shore oil platform at the time so I paid cash for it.

@@thephantomzoneboxing I owned it for 15 years and put over 100k miles on it. Back then that was about all you could get out of those cars before needing a rebuild. It was using oil needing about a quart every 500 miles and showing blue oil smoke out of the exhaust. I was just getting ready to pull the engine and rebuild it. Then a guy offered me more than I had paid for the car. I warned him the engine was tired and needed rebuilding. He said he expected that, thanked me for my honesty, and said he wanted to be the one to do that so he knew it would be built right. I took the money and he drove away with it.

@@thephantomzoneboxing My Dad left his 1984 Dodge Ram Truck to me just before he passed away. He knew I would take care of it. It's exactly the way it was when he purchased it new in 1985. It needed a lot of work to get it back on the road. The fuel gauge didn't work, the wiring behind the dash was burned up, the auto trans gear indicator didn't work, and most of the dashboard lights were not working as well. I spent 3 months fixing everything getting it back to 100% of everything working properly. It has no rust at all as they don't salt the roads here in Alabama. I've had people wanting to buy it including the Dodge Dealership after I drove it there for some parts. I came out of the parts sales counter to find the Dealership Owner looking it over. He wanted to put it on display and offered me top dollar for it. Way more than the Blue book value and not as a trade in for another vehicle. I tuned it down. It's a good reliable truck and it was my Dad's pride and joy, and now it's that for me as well.

Cant forget starting in 71 the smallest engine offered was the 318 and the GTX, Roadrunner, and satellite where all the same car; I have 2 satellites just wanting to be restored. Thanks for the vid, I really am glad more people are looking back up with the forgotten B-Body!
