What Makes a Movie Look "Good"

In this video essay, I attempt to explain some of the things which I think make a movie look "good" from a cinematography perspective. I focus on color, color balance, texture, framing, and lighting to support some of my points. I use Point Break as an example, as well as movies like Titanic, The Dark Knight, Oppenheimer, Sucker Punch, Rebel Moon, Hocus Pocus 2, and others.
While definitely not a comprehensive look at cinematography, I just try to convey my opinion about what makes a movie look appealing or not. You might feel completely different, and that's epic.

Great video. I've seen others try to explain the "Netflix effect" but none of then were as thourough and informative. I'd love to see a video that goes in more on the colour grading on your film and what you did then versus now.

Really enjoyed this breakdown! It was super helpful that you had negative examples from your own work so you could really explain what went wrong in those instances.

Making films sounds way too hard, let's just go back to books 😫Interesting breakdown though!

CINEMATOGRAPHY IS MORE IMPORTANT! preach that! couldn’t agree more, i personally find it incredibly hard watching post 00s cinema. ‘asian’ cinema (terrible generalization, i’m aware) is probably an exception, but again, the vibes are just not there. even with directors whose 80-90s movies i loved, i cant stand their new work, mainly because of the weird color grading/4hd quality (which i find overwhelming)/artificial clean look/CGi (for sci-fi)/odd set design and wardrobe choices. so it’s always a downgrade from their ‘original’ work. there are tons of examples in all genres. they just don’t do it the same anymore. i haven’t seen a single Nolan’s film and most modern blockbusters and high-grossing films. all the ‘great’ large hollywood productions in general are not my thing, but at least 80s-90s movies somehow work for me. while none of the modern stuff does.

Shout out to Point Break and T2, that was my religion growing up. Enjoy your video, agreed with most things. I am proud to say I've never seen a Marvel movie haha.
