Movie rating systems are super confusing. It's hard to know what 4 stars means vs. 5 stars and should 5 stars only go to perfect movies? How do you know if a movie is perfect? Well... it's complicated.

This is weird because I had the exact realization when I watched one movie, "The Ritual" which is almost perfect at what it wants to accomplish. There are scarier films which gave me reason to not give it a perfect rating in objectivity but it also accomplishes everything it's supposed to. Horror, like all genres, could be ranked on how scary they are but that doesn't represent how good the movie is. This overall quality is affected by how well a movie stays in it's genre but the storyline is also important. There has to be a balance of fear and plot. Because there is no way to force more horror into the ritual without sacrificing plot or any other qualities that make it a good movie that means it should be considered perfect at what it sets out to accomplish. I love thinking about this stuff. I've been waiting for the perfect time to watch this video. It was absolutely amazing!!

I'm so glad it was helpful!! This system has helped me so much with my indecision and how to quantify how I feel. I think horror is a great example because some horror movies are SCARY but not GOOD and balancing that fear and story like you said is difficult. The best way to scare the audience is to get them invested in the story so they can't look away but a lot of horror movies miss that and say "big scary monster is what will scare people". You may have inspired a new video on what makes a good horror! You're too kind for watching and interacting all the time. Always a pleasure ✌️
