@@blargghkip E-killer often runs Silk Scarf, yes, but if you're running a different Arceus-Normal set then you might want to run something else, and Arceus-Normal is the only type that can run a different held item. Freezai should have mentioned this.
@@afriendlycampfire260 That might be necessary to keep Arceus relevant come Gen 13 when Miraidon and Zacian have been so powercrept that they're considered D-tier Ubers.
Arceus is such a cool pokemon. you can build an ubers team without it, then you can just slap in an arceus to patch any holes it has. It’s amazing in how versatile it can be
I play the Ubers UU tier, and some forms are insanely good in the format. We only have Normal, Ground, and Fairy banned via usage, and the majority of the banned mons are Arc forms. Arceus Water, Steel, and Flying were banned for being way too good defensively, and Arceus Ghost and especially Fire were extremely strong offensively, mainly due to them being very good Ekiller forms without Normal being around. Currently Arceus isn't super common, Arc Dark being the most used for utility purposes.
Yeah it's not that most of these Arceus forms aren't strong. It's just that they have a unique issue of not only competing for team slots with other Ubers in the tier, but also competing with the 3 best forms for species clause. If you banned Arceus normal and Arceus ground then Arceus as a whole would probably still push 50% usage.
@@fortidogi8620 magearna, mewtwo, hero zacian, palkia-o, giratina all really common and valuable, lots of the banned in ou but not good enough for ubers mons like archaludon, chien-pao, palafin make frequent appearances too. awesome super fun tier tbh
@@fortidogi8620 The top mons at the moment are Magearna, Zacian, Mewtwo, Terapagos, Chien-Pao, Necrozma-Dawn-Wings, and Palkia-Origin. The format is super fun and unique, I highly recommend it.
You know, there IS one more form of Arceus, but it's locked behind its signature item in its own game. Yup, I'm talking the Legend Plate which you get once you complete the Hisui Dex and defeat/catch Arceus. Here's what the Legend Plate does: When given to Arceus, it starts as a Normal-Type. The twist is that when using Judgement, Arceus will automatically change its type to whatever is super-effective against the target. I'm just saying...if we have to live with Calyrex-Shadow going Tera Fairy, why not implement the Legend Plate in the mainline games to let Arceus change its type every time it uses Judgement? It might be too much for Ubers, but with Ubers specifically, I say screw order, I want chaos!
@@georgecortes3416 eternamax isn't even playable because if it would be due to a glitch it can become invincible in one stat, ruining any tier it finds itself in
@@theschnozzler I know, I'm just spitballing lol. I know Eternamax is meant to be unplayable as the BST makes it like those big RPG bosses with stats your player characters can't comprehend ever having. But yeah, even a tier where everything is legal couldn't comprehend Arceus changing its types at will lol.
@@theschnozzler eternax literally broke the entirity of true hackmons lmao, make a physically immune version and a specially immune version and just wall anything.
One thing I always found a bit funny about Arceus is that it has the stats for a gameplay niche we don’t see much. Which is a fast wall. Fast Pokémon usually are super frail and defensive Pokémon usually not fast. While you can EV some defensive mons to be a bit faster and some fast Pokémon to be a bit sturdier, they will still lag behind in these categories next to Pokémon more dedicated to these niches. Arceus is the only one that can do both and not underperform in either stat when compared to other Pokémon of similar strength.
@@troykv96 Technically Serpiroir’s stats are made for being a fast wall. But because it’s typing and movepool weren’t good for it it didn’t take. So they reinvented it with Contrary
@@frankwest5388the same can be said for lugia being held back because of its typing and honestly subseed serp performs better in ou then lugia performs in Ubers as a wall
@@troykv96 I think I remember hearing Raikou being described as a fast wall in Gen 2 due to it being able to use recover before the opponent can attack
Something interesting to mention is that in gen 7, z-crystals also changed arceus’ type, giving it access to a z-move, but at the cost of not having the 20% type boost from the plate. although idk if any did use it because i didn’t play Ubers back then, it’s just something i found on my own.
I love how the types fit into their theming Fairy being a trickster, spreading status and being a lil goober Ground being strong and offensive, using rocks to jts advantage Then theres just water who likes the burn. Dammit
To elaborate on the part of good forms depending on the meta, Arceus-Fire is far from the best in singles Ubers, only being oppressive in Ubers UU where many of its would-be answers are banned by usage. However, in Doubles Ubers, the power of the Koraidon-Groudon core makes Arceus-Fire one of the best forms, where its natural bulk, utility and access to a strong sun-boosted spread move in Heat Wave make it the perfect partner for the dual sun setters. It helps that Kyogre is at its lowest point due to the presence of both bike dragons who resist its Water moves and either replace its rain with sun (without having to get out immediately or Tera on the rain like Groudon) or threaten to OHKO it or force a Tera, on a move that nothing that isn't immune wants to take either, making sun-boosted Fire STAB harder than ever to withstand.
Great vid as usual, Freezai! I just wanted to say, though - you've used the same asset for the DRAGON type many videos now, and each time it has the D a bit black and a black bar across the A... is that intentional, or a mistake? I don't get it... (sorry if this seems like a nitpick)
Nah, it wasn't busted, it was over centralizing, which is a worse sin. If you did not had a Palkia-Origin, Dondozo, Booster energy Great Tusk or Defensive Landorus-T, you were just screwed. This is what I like to call "The Silvally theorem", the fact that a Pokemon might not see play because of species clause causing insane competition.
@@N12015is sivally actually a good example though? Most sivally types don't see play because it sucks, not because it has competition from species clause.
Necrozma Dusk is also a steel type and one of the best mons in the game. Honestly the introduction of dusk mane is what mostly killed steel arceus, because why would you use steel arceus when you can use Dusk Mane to do the same things it does while also freeing up your arceus slot.
Arceus is so interesting for being pretty fast, insanely bulky, and slightly underpowered compared to other mons in ubers, which is funny considering it has the same base stat across the board
I don't know if I'll get an answer to this but I have a question. Arceus-Water is A on the viability rankings (with stuff like Arceus-Normal, Eternatus, and Kyogre), but when looking at it's actual usage it's down in 36th place with 2.6% (around mons like Ditto, Giratina-Altered, and Terapagos). Why is it considered on-par or even better than pokemon in the top 10-20 in the tier when it's usage actually sits around pokemon that are C- ranked or worse?
It’s because you can only have one Arceus on a team. If the three best Pokémon in a tier are all Arceus formes, then that won’t be reflected in the usage stats (unless the tier is incredibly diverse). It’s possible for six Pokémon to be on over 50% of teams, but it isn’t possible for two of the six to be Arceus. Water is outclassed by EKiller and Fairy, so its usage stats are artificially low compared to its viability.
A few years ago I used the "Arceus we have at home," Silvally, in Gen VIII VGC and Grass was actually one of its best forms (before Rillaboom got its hidden ability of course). It really shows how metagame changes which Plate... or Memory is best.
If a type can be good as a mono type it can be a good arceus. The metagame is also a factor. A bigger one really. Even Arceus bug could be good in the right circumstances. That being said I can't imagine electric arceus ever being good. Ground is just way too prevelant.
I rhink one extra mention for why arceus-normal is so good is because it can hold an extra item. Idk how the damage multiplier for plates work (stab + plate boost?), but normal can let you carry whatever other items you want. Life orb is a pretty great example since it also boosts ypur other attacks
Arceus Dark Tera Normal is good against Calyrex Shadow. When you terastallize to Normal you are immune to Astral Barrage, you could run coverage to hit Calyrex with Psyshock if its Tera Fighting or Sludge Bomb for Tera Fairy.
yea, well... in practice (anything goes, only tier where caly is legal), caly-shadows tend to use tera ghost, normal or grass. a good dark-type judgement is usually enough to put it in its place. and even if not, you don't know if ur opponent is fairy or fighting, and running 2 coverage moves just for 1 mon means u miss out on utility like twave or willowisp.
Arceus-Grass is arguably the best form imo. It's been the best utility 'mon in Ubers for well over 10 years now, and it's always useful. Aromatherapy, Grass being a decent typing, Healing, Will-o-wisp/T--wave support, Defog, Roar, Calm Mind tank potential. It's just amazing. Gen 6-7 Arceus-Grass and Groudon core made such a nice balance sweep shutdown core that Weezing was slotted onto the team and if played properly, you had 0 losing matchups. Xerneas got hard-walled, Mega Mewtwo got rolled, Yveltal lost to Will-o+Weezing...it was just great. Idk you can't go wrong with Arceus-Grass.
Poor Shaymin Sky, I remember almost always using it in Ubers, since besides Arceus it was the only other Grass type in there, and it was nice to outspeed Darkrai with it. Ubers Jirachi flinching, if only it could be 130 speed now.
When picking a type you can also think about what moves that type Arceus *could* have. It’s got 120 in every stat, if you use a type that has a build using both Attack or Special Attack. Like how Galarian Rapidash was back in SwSh, if you choose the right type they have no way of knowing whether to switch in a Special wall or a Physical wall. If you choose for example Normal, there’s no thinking needed, they know what you’re doing. Arceus has equal SpAtk and Atk, so if you take everything out, like team preview back then; there’s no way of knowing which they are.
Lots of weird editing problems in this one: Errors and glitchy textures on the type nameplates, silhouettes fading back out during transitions but not ALL of them (Arc:Ground keeps vanishing), just a lot of funky stuff. Neat topic, but the production is definitely down.
I do have to wonder, would Ubers be more balanced if virtually every team didn’t have access to an Arceus teamslot? I know about the whole “Farceus” situation in Gen 4, but even then it eventually still got banned there. Speaking from experience I feel like E-Killer and now Dragon Dance warp the meta too much.
I was always partial to Dark Type Arceus. During the 3DS days, I ran a defensive Calm mind sweeper, with Refresh for getting rid of status. I was disappointed when they axed it.
Noticed a few little weird visual things in the editing. They probably weren't too distracting for most people, but hopefully Freezai's style becomes easier for this editor if they continue working together.
3:50 Im not a competitive pokemon player so i could be completely missing the point here, but if arceus normal is so strong that every team needs to be ready for it, why is it (relatively) so low in pick rate? Why isnt everyone using it if its thats strong? Are the other pokemon also that powerful or is there something else that I'm not taking into account?
So you mentioned that Arceus forms got nerfed for later Gens, but did simulators like showdown show the Arceus type for previous Gens like Gen 5? I never played Ubers when I was younger and played SMOGON. I was always an OU player so I'm not sure. However I've actually recently been starting to regret not playing Ubers like DPP Ubers and Gen 5 Ubers. I've been thinking of going back and messing around with older Ubers formats
God, i hadn't even considered the metagame implications of Arceus being able to Terastalize. So in a pinch, you can flip it to a completely different type against something intended to counter it, or gain STAB on a coverage move but switch it to a type with better resistances. Or have really busted Extremespeeds
Idk if I’m the only one, but I want Z-moves to come back. And Arceus was able to run it too with its Multitype, which was cool. An OP mechanic Pokemon even straight out banned was type-gems where a move did 1.3 or 1.5 times (i forget which) on the first move of that type.
I agree, the gem ban is underwhelming. but also consider that z moves work once a battle where gems work once per mon. its a 1.5 boost with no choice lock nor recoil.
@@meannush7552 Speaking of gems I feel like EITHER Pokemon Co. or Showdown should have a “Single-gem Clause.” Pokemon would straight out ban it, can’t see why not be able to use at least one. Also it’s a one time use, or make it so that it doesn’t stack with stat buffs, like setting up SD then Iron Head with Steel Gem Kartana (just an example).
The 4th factor in Arceus type viability, much like megas its taking up your Arceus slot. A lot of these types would be more usable if you didnt have the opportunity cost of losing on Fairy or Ekiller for using them
Nope! anything goes player here, there is no species clause. while having 2 or even 3 arceus is definitely a thing, you dont see any more of that cause arceus's stats are too balanced. you really want some extreme power like miraidon or bulkiness like ting-lu.
@@glacierwing kinda assumed and I honestly should've known given I've known about ag lol how's the meta been since the revive cats ban anything stupid or silly?
