What Makes NASA's Artemis Space Suit The Best Space Suit Yet?

NASA showed off its new space suit prototypes aimed at supporting astronauts headed back to the Moon in the coming decade. There were lots of comments about the aesthetics, but the truth is, all the suit features make engineering sense and this is probably the best suit NASA has ever designed. After all they've had 50 years to improve on things.

Those low profile large diameter slim bearings are really fragile, not sure how they will keep them safe from ultra sharp regolith etc. and be sealed and still be low friction. I would predict that some sort of helical-origami'd flex joint will replace the ring bearings. I was thinking the same thing "Danger Will Robinson !!!" arms flapping too. Wonder if that arm/ forward shoulder position causes one to hunch one's back ?
@absalomdraconis
@absalomdraconis 5 лет назад
@@extradimension7356 : I would expect any flex joints to go _over_ the bearing instead of replacing it. They already mentioned why they're going with bearings, and origami style honestly won't help with that. What origami _can_ do is protect the primary bearings, and it can do _that_ with little to no pressurization, and thus little to no forces for the astronauts to fight against. Edited in: Also, they probably prevent the Hunchback of Artemis by simply making the suits taller. You'd only hunch over if that helped you do something, so it'll go away with proper dimensioning.

Eventually I'm sure there will be metallized powered exoskeletons with generic heating and cooling, but there's enough trouble with power sources for those here on Earth, let alone the weight of transportation, potential for malfunction, etc. By the time humans are trying to travel the stars, I'm sure there will be much better suits. Or really, given how much easier this would be even now, Boston Dynamics inspired telepresence robots for maintenance use. The best space suit is a comfortable seat in your command pod.

I'd expect the colors to become more localized, but also more garish. They'll ultimately want them for "Safety Vest" purposes, so they'll dedicate less space to them, but they're probably going to go with a high-visibility color scheme, such as Orange-Blue-Yellow-RetroreflectorSilver or something. I'm certain that the "safety spots" will be intentionally garish.

@@absalomdraconis Maybe for lunar use, they'll use the bright colours, but on Mars, which is already pretty bright, they may go for a hideous green, as nothing on Mars' surface (as far as I know) is green at all, while most of the rocks are in the orange to red zone, and yellow sometimes bleeds into it.

3:17 The rotating bearings for the joints are really neat. At first I didn't know how they work (it had me confused for quite a while), I thought they were some really fancy form of concertina joints (basically works by using segmented plates that goes inside of the other plates. But, because of that they are pretty heavy) used in some of the older deep diving suits. It turns out that it just rotated like "turrets" in whatever direction to allow the operator to flex. This allows for a very surprising amount of flexibility (go see the AX-5 suit, pretty magical stuff there), and reduction in weight (compared to concertina joints.....since rotational joints don't need segmented plates). Another neat thing about rotating bearing joints in space suits (or deep diving suits) is that they don't need ball bearings at all. Which I thought is cool. Also, I love the fact, how the engine nozzle of the F-35 uses the same type of rotating joints to achieve VTOL :D

@@danilooliveira6580 there's a variety of ways that could be achieved but just using a sliding rubber seal is probably the easiest. I wouldn't say that "we are finally pushing out into our solar system" since no one has been beyond low Earth orbit since Apollo 17 in 1972 and it will be awhile before they even get back to the moon, much less beyond it. The idea that they will go to Mars in the next few years is ridiculous, as there has never been a spacecraft that has returned from Mars yet. They would need to first send an unmanned lander that could get back into Mars orbit and somehow return to Earth before sending a manned flight to land. At best they could send a manned Mars orbiting flight that could return. Just doing a test flight to Mars and back is a two year mission.

To get to Mars you need to be able to get back off the surface and still have fuel to get out of Mars' orbit for a return flight to Earth. 8:21 Ah, zero pre-breathing. I haven't heard that term for a long time. Isn't that basically to (vastly) reduce the amount of time that the astronaut needs to go through during the pre-breathing procedure before donning a spacesuit? If I recall correctly, astronauts need to pre-breathe for like 30-45 minutes before wearing most (conventional) space suits.

Would be cool, but that would require a backpack smaller than the door in the suit. And dust would still get in, because there would be dust on the backpack. So maybe it's just not worth the effort.
