With a good set of winter rubber and the right stretch of snow-covered backroad, the Mazda CX-30 is a hell of a thing to drive.
No, not like that. It’s not a spicy powerslide rig built to chuck snow into orbit on command. My tester’s 2.5-mustered 182 horsepower, sent to all four corners via a six-speed automatic. It’s a good setup for responsive torque at lower revs, decent oomph when required, and solid fuel economy as well.
But the soul of a sports car shines through the driving experience on winding backroads covered in a bit of fresh powder, even if it isn't the hod-rod choice for your dollar. Driving enthusiasts will find some convincingly spirited driving dynamics at their fingertips, and a driveline that's an expert at letting you lead and delivering the response you expect in all conditions.

Just picked up my CX-30 3 weeks ago and can’t say enough about the car, although I am driving in city and hi way it’s performance os stunning.

Let's not forget that the CX-30 is now available in 2.5 Turbo, 250 hp and 320 lbs torque on 93 octane. On 87 octane it's 227 hp 310 tq. W 250 hp it runs 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, 14.1 1/4 mile (1320) To get that kind of performance you have to look at BMW and Mercedes for $20k more.

The cx-30 is perfect for the price. I have the turbo model and it can surprise sportier cars on the road and also handle my adventures. The safety features are great too.

I wish I liked how the Cx30 looks more. I would've already bought one. I Test drove the Mazda 3 turbo and it drove so awesome. It felt like it was on rails. I've driven all kinds of cars, Bentley, Mercedes, Porsche, Fords, Nissan, Chevy and what I'm telling you surprises me. The Mazda 3 was the best car I've ever driven. It was so balanced, comfortable, quiet, and fast.

I bought my CX30 a year ago, drives really smooth. Also, i go on a lot of trips and now have around 24 kilometers on it. Never no problems, so far. I like how the headlights are bright.

What can you say about the visibility? Them small windows make it look like claustrophobic and hard to see the outside.

I put some winter shoes on my cx-30. I went with the blizzak ws 90 because I got a deal on them. Buy 3 tires and get 1 for a dollar. I wanted to get Michelin x ice, but I saved a lot of money on these over the Michelin. Given similar prices I would suggest the Michelin x ice. I've had those before and they were a better all around tire. The blizzaks are quite noisy and give a less comfortable ride.

Two things I've found is the Suburu is LOUD wind noise, drone from the wheels makes it more of a chore on a longer drive. Second thing I've found is the CVT is pretty poor on snow (on all seasons) where the Mazda used its brakes to get that traction off the line.

THANKS--- I'm thinking of the CX-50 which is BUILT on this powertrain and frame... so this should be a decent indicator of how the 50 will do.. I'm IN conditions like that a LOT each year-- and will be MORE this year by weather forecasts...

Can't say enough about the cx-30; it is a solid performer in both city driving and highway! it is surprising quiet with a very comfortable ride! and yes, I've already driven it in the snow, and the suspension and all wheel drive give it a good grip on the snow. I bought the basic model!! I hope it lasts as long as my previous 2008 Honda CR V LX.

Absolutely! 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds, 14.1 1320 meter (1/4 mile). Those numbers are unheard of at this price range. I'm drooling at the thought of upgrading my CX-3 to a 2.5 Turbo CX-30.

I have the 2021 cosstrek outdoor and I love it! I dont want to buy a truck or offroad car since I live in the city. My subaru is like a mini wrangler for light offloading and snow!

I’ve had mine 2 years almost 3 in May and I mine gets stuck on reverse if there snow so I don’t love that and had trouble going up steep hills with ice but put it in M, I’ll have to try the off-road next time

If a hybrid could be made out of the CX-30's powertrain and the Crosstrek's chassis then it would be the perfect small SUV! I'm leery about the reputation the Crosstrek's engine has for blowing head gaskets and the longevity/usability issues of its CVT but love the ride/handing compromise of its chassis. On the flip side, the CX-30 has a bulletproof powertrain but it's noisier and markedly rougher riding. Thanks for the review and looking forward to a full comparison between those two.

Yes, if only Subaru weren't permanently wedded to its controversial powertrain, especially it's CVT transmission (unfortunately for those of us who know and care about such things).

I would absolutely trade my current CX-30 in for a hybrid version if they came out with one. I had a Kia Niro that I had to have repurchased, and if I could have the Niro’s fuel mileage on the CX-30, I’d be set.

For some reason Mazda decided not to give us the "offroad drive mode" here in Italy, I'm still going to get the AWD version but I feel a bit cheated out! I hope it won't make that much of a difference.. Thanks a lot for the review!

Companies base what things they put on their cars on a lot of different factors. I guess they just decided Italians didn’t really need the off-road mode.

The front radar behind the logo gets caked in snow almost immediately. This causes the safety systems to turn off completely when driving in falling snow.

In a way that's a good thing as many active safety systems are susceptible to false positives on snow-covered roads.

Awesome review. I've been looking around to assess Mazda's AWD, and in specific, the CX 30, for winter driving, and this is the best look at it so far! I live in central Vermont, where there is plenty of snow and I go the mountains to ride often, so this is what I need to know. I have a 2011 Forester presently, but need a new car, and having loved my pre-Crosstrek-era Impreza Sport, the CX 30 looks similar. Only concern is that our paved roads are often beat up, and I do a fair amount of driving on the many dirt roads we have in Vermont, which can go from mud to hardened and sometimes potholed/washboard surface several times across the year. Question: I know the CX 30 has a stiffer ride, and even a torsion beam in the rear instead of independent suspension, but any guesses if a 16-inch rim with thicker sidewall tires (16s are speced on the base trim model) would absorb any of the dirt and paved road chatter better than the 17 or 18 rims/wheels that come on the higher-trim level models?

Same here , I just bought the turbo in mica blue the cladding actually blends in well with this colour! But it’s all about the engine and this thing fly’s my friend 👍🏻

Lots of great cars in this range but the 6 speed transmission sells it to me. Cvt is not for off road.

Petty complaints about having to wait for the power hatch to open or close, and the lack of space in the back are common from reviewers “trying” to find faults in this vehicle. Oh and that unintuitive infotainment system with its horribly confusing knob instead of a fingerprint riddled touchscreen is another. Apparently many have not taken the time (2 minutes) to “master” it’s use. Welcome to the now, now, now world I guess.

Can you comment on the heat in the cabin when it is -30 in Northern Ontario. Do the windows fog up? Heated seats. How good is the heat? Heated steering wheel. How warm? Living in Northern Ontario we need these these items to be above average? Looking forward to your comments and anyone else who might know the answers to these questions. Maybe you can scale the answer with a description. 1 being poor and 10 being excellent. Thank you!! Thank you for your reply. How about heat inside the car? ( cabin heat).

Seats are pretty good, I’d give 8-9 out of 10. Steering is not crazy hot, it gets warm but needs a bit of time to get there.

@@michaels999 how badly do you need ground clearance is probably going to be the deciding factor. I think the crosstrek has an inch or 2 more of ground clearance and ofc the symmetrical awd. But mazda has also dramatically improved on their awd specifically for offroad conditions as well now, and generally the mazda will be more quieter/luxury and sporty. Basically if you want to save money and need a bit more practicality the subaru, if you want a comforting interior, and a generally better overall driving experience the cx30 is the goto imo

He did those are snow tires on that I also change mine to better all season tires cross climate 2 because the ones that came with it were bad and slipped a lot

@@Magso94 I also changed the tires immediately after buying it! the tires that came with it are crappy. I highly recommend to change to better tires after purchasing it; if you are financing it of course! the handling and the ride comfort feels far superior with better tires. The ride no longer feel as firm but rather a lot smoother!!

I own a CX-30 Turbo Premium. Great car in many ways. Looks good and runs fast on smooth roads. But on any bumpy or rough road this car is absolutely AWFUL! The suspension is completely insufficient. You feel every little bump through the ridiculously skinny steering wheel. Also the gas tank is just to small, not enough range.

No they dont rust like that anymore, but the paint chips more on these modern cars and needs to be touched up. the CX-30's plastic panels will help a ton to prevent rust too

Not all CVTs are bad. My 15 umpreza(same as 15 crosstrek) has 232k miles with just cvt fluids every 60k miles. Still runs the same as when we bought it at 3 miles.

I’m a Mazda fan but the huge plastic cladding has deterred me from getting this plus it’s just overpriced for being a jacked up Mazda 3...with only 2” of ground clearance more than the Mazda 3 sedan or sport then the 3 is a better value (you can also get these in AWD)!
