Barcelona has hosted the Spanish Grand Prix since 1991, but the circuit has rarely thrown up a memorable race, particularly in dry conditions. In his latest video, Chain Bear explains the variety of reasons that contribute to dull racing at the track, which is currently fighting to save its place on the F1 calendar for 2020.

@ciaronsmith4995
@ciaronsmith4995 5 лет назад
@Reverend RunBad He didn't. Kimi passed Seb twice at Brazil I thought? Did you even watch last year? Kimi was super unlucky last year. And I've watched F1 for a long time since 1981. A Peak Raikkonen at McLaren in the tyre war > Vettel. By far. The reason Raikkonen had struggles from mid-2013-2018 was simply because of the Pirelli tyre, pressure and camber limits that were imposed after Silverstone 2013. This destroyed Kimi's driving style, which requires a strong front end. At Ferrari, most of the cars understeered like hell, which means Kimi's issues were exacerbated, because, Kimi could not ever get his front tyres up to temperature. Ever. This year, there is more downforce on the cars than ever, and Kimi even said they are starting to feel like the V8's again. Hence his improved form. He had a similar issue from 2007-2009 on the Bridgestone control tyre, but only in quali. Martin Brundle compared Kimi's raw speed in his prime to Senna at the Tribute recently. Think about that.

I think that horrible last chicane makes the situation a lot worse because it's slow, there's only one line through there, and as the first apex is off-cambered, the cars understeer and slide even more creating even more space between each other onto the main straight. But it's interesting that both Barcelona and Abu Dhabi produce frequently dull races even though both circuits are complete opposites from each other, which means the problem very much lies with the car. This year, the fronts wings were changed to make following easier, and although some drivers have reported that it has kind of worked, it's still very hard to overtake because of the narrow operating window of the Pirellis not allowing drivers to push. At least with Zandvoort if it's a boring race, it will be on a circuit that drivers enjoy!

At Zandvoort they should make a long proper straight from the hairpin at Hugenholtz down to the long right hander at the far end of the circuit and tighten up that right hander. That way you have a straight longer than the pit straight as a 2nd DRS zone. They're already proposing banking the final sweeping right hander on to the pit straight so that should help somewhat with overtaking. But that run into Tarzan is the only potential overtaking opportunity at the moment.

Circuits are unfairly getting blamed for problems with the cars. The problem solves itself if cars can more closely follow eachother. That's called active areodynamic, it is applied on many road supercars like Porshe 918, McLaren P1. The reason they baned active areodynamic is because it makes the car diven more by computer rather than driver, the same reason they stop using traction contral.

Interesting idea, not sure if it would actually work. But it does add more complexity to building and developing a car (and thus you would need a bigger budget) which wouldn't help in the battle against big budget teams dominating

They had it in 2009 already with the movable front wing, which driver could change on the go with a button. It was next to useless that it rarely even got mentioned.

The testing theory was disproven this year. Winter testing was moved to Bahrain and the race was still great, while Spain was still boring

I liked the race. 3 different tyres. 2 stop worked. And safety car as a bonus.

It happens to all categories where wings, winglets or front flip-ups are present, but to much lesser degrees.

Part of the problem is that the teams have and do spend so much time there when testing. The drivers and teams know it too well

Let's be honest with ourselves here. There's virtual zero passing in F1 as a whole on any track. Baku, Monaco, Australia, Spain? I mean...it's just the way it is at the moment.

How about a long straight that splits in two allowing chasing driver to take a different bit of track with clean air. As the two cars meet to merge you get the excitement often seen when cars come out of the pits to compete for position.

Winter testing at a non race track, don't mind testing at a race track after the race like this week as next year's car will be different. There are still storiea through the field but the on track action at places like Barcelona are getting to and far between

Can you talk about how important can be the ground effect on this situations of dirty air and why it isn't as used aka allowed in f1

Ground effect was banned because it's incredibly unpredictable. It just takes a poor ride height setting to make your grip disappear as soon as you hit the brakes or accelerate out of a corner

Why don't the host nation rotate the venues between circuits within the country that comply to the rule and at the same time banning winter tests at circuits in the calendar a year prior up after the hosting year? Rotate Spanish GP between Catalunya, Jerez, and Aragon. For USA, rotate USGP between COTA, Indianapolis, Long Beach, Watkins Glen, Sonoma Raceway, Laguna Seca, Road America, St Petersburg, Birmingham, Mid-Ohio, Daytona. For Italy, rotate Italian GP between Monza, Imola, Misano, Valleunga, and Mugello. For Japanese GP, rotate between Suzuka, Fuji, Motegi, Autopolis, and Sugo. Those are just some examples. I believe when this being implemented the numbers of dull races will be reduced to bare minimum because virtually everyone will go to each circuit as a virgin for each season.
@luqmanhakimi910
@luqmanhakimi910 5 лет назад
@Wan R I think each country could at least try to alternate two circuits only like Germany alternanting Hockenheim and Nurburgring. Too much can be a bit confusing especially in terms of logistics, audience and organising costs.

What creates a dull F1 race? Herman Tilke tracks that don’t allow for overtaking. Poorly designed city street tracks like Monaco that don’t allow for overtaking. Driver/Racing Team dominance from uncompetitively rich and overly funded teams or cheating F1 cars.
