What are some of the things YOU think make David Coverdale Great?
What Makes This Singer Great? David Coverdale
As many of you know David Coverdale is one of my favorite singers of all time and today I'm going to break down what I think makes him great.
Before leading Whitesnake, David spent a couple of years as the frontman to Deep Purple before the band disbanded for the first time.
He took the next couple of years to launch a solo career producing 2 albums but before the release of his second album, Coverdale had already formed his new band Whitesnake.
Whitesnake ended up being huge in Asia, the UK, and the rest of Europe but were less popular in the States. Americans were finally won over in 1987 however, with the release of their self-titled album.
The record went on to sell 8 times platinum and produced some of their biggest hit singles including "Here I Go Again" and "Is This Love".
Today I'll dive into a couple of David's live performances and I'll break down what I love about his singing. I want to know what you all thought made him great too, so please share in the comments section!

Saw Whitesnake last year in Buffalo, and I think it was the last show on the tour..Although David's voice was a little tired the show was the tighest I've seen by any band in a long time..He commands the stage like no one else and knew when to ease up on certain notes that might have been tough that night...The consumate professional...Reb and the band was spot on!

davids a true pro. He's lost much of his vocals over the last couple years, but the man is STILL doing it. That says alot. He must love the fans and his music. He still oozes that it factor that makes him who he is on stage. That cannot be coached or taught. Kudos and thanks for sharing this Ken.

I first took notice of David Coverdale's voice in 1987 when my local radio station started play the original studio version of Here I Go Again, and I was still in middle school at time. Things that come to mind for me are his killer high baritone (or tenor according to some people who disagree with me), the Led Zeppelin influence in his singing, and of course Tawny's appearances in Whitesnake's videos in the late 80s.

Even though I have been into Hard rock and Christian Rock all my life, I even play guitar and sing, been subscribed to your channel for at least 5 years, I had never heard any of your music. My loss. I heard Coverdale speak in an interview from the 70s on radio (back then) and was amazed how deep his speaking voice was. I was a DP mk3 fan through Burn before I got into the mk 2 gear like In rock, Fireball and Machine Head (always been huge fan of the Gillan era). I really liked DC's bluesy crooning type approach before he lets loose. I found a similar voice 20 years later '92 in Cornell with Sound Garden. Cornell's voice quality had a similar sound to my ears, from a similar musical inheritance. I have been hooked ever since. Not many come close to these two awesome singers.

For me, with Whitesnake, what comes to mind is the early bluesy era of 1978-82, man alive those albums and songs are still stellar examples of amazing bluesy hard-rock. I like Whitesnake all around but that was the band's best era, no doubt.

He didn’t even skip a note plus a band of Steve Vai, Adrian Vandenberg, Rudy Sarzo and Tommy Aldridge the best concert I’ve seen in a while on RU-vid. If you haven’t seen it take the time. I would say you covered the majority about David Coverdale in such a good way, I enjoy your videos. I would say also that David conveys feelings and sensations in a really good way and the content of his songs also talk about love, the great difficulty in love, pain and more... So he is in addition to being such a diverse singer also a soul singer. He is also one of favorite rock singers... I think he has a special combination in his voice ... it's like hearing Robert Planet and Ronny James Dio in one voice. If I could offer a song to sing... I would love to hear you sing "standing in the shadows of love" or "Aint gonna cry no more today". also maybe one of the songs of survivor band like: "Burning heart" or "The eye of the tiger" :) Thank u for sharing :)

When David was younger. Sorry, that’s what I think about, because his voice did change. Some singers are gifted with their voices staying forever young, sadly others keep singing but not as beautiful as when in their prime. Look at 70 year old John B. Who sang in Australia it sounded wonderful or Styx, Aerosmith,that scream is as fresh as when I was 18. 🤩I just heard the Backstreet Boys on the Jimmy Fallen show, each and every one of them sounded so fresh, their voices right on point. But I got to say David was one of my favorite singers, I still have his songs.

A good question for which Coverdale is a perfect subject for is this: how much does one's accent or if in cases of English as a second language, play in singing, the vocalization of certain words like say "more"? Muo're or Mewa're sounds for example. David's speaking voice is what I think of as proper British English when I hear him talk. He'd be a great narrator if this music thing doesn't pan out.
@dancollins8296
@dancollins8296 4 года назад
David's speaking voice is absolutely fabulous. He has such a crisp deep tone.
@Darrell7777
@Darrell7777 4 года назад
The reason why many British vocalists "lose their accents" when they sing is a combination of a natural watering down of the accent when going from speaking to singing in addition to being heavily influenced by American vocalists and emulating them. So essentially they aren't losing their accents so much as they are adopting an American one in addition to the aforementioned watering down. Ken can certainly provide a more technical addendum to this explanation.
@chrishodgson4290
@chrishodgson4290 4 года назад
Ironically David's 'English' accent is certainly not the one he grew up with. It's quite a posh accent and the area of England he comes from has a quite different one - I believe he adopted it early on to give his professional voice an air of class and authority. Having learned to sing late in life (and coming originally from a place pretty close to David's roots) I have realised I have to change words from how I'd speak to cover certain songs.

@@Darrell7777 Maybe in the early days before the Beatles when singers did covers of American songs but after the Beatles you had a whole host as of Brit singers with their accents intact. Ray Davies, Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury to name three.

RU-vid actually recommended one of your videos while listening to David's music, and that's how I rediscovered this channel. It amazes me how he has that deep, gritty, bluesy tone, and then he can just go up and reach those really high notes. It sounds like two totally different voices to me, but they come out of the same person. I also think he and Robert Plant sound really similar in the higher register, but they sound nothing alike in the lower register (David's voice is noticeably deeper), which I find interesting. He is certainly in the top tier of rock and metal singers all time. I think if I could have anyone else's singing voice, it would be his.

Love his old stuff too, love ain't no stranger and slide it in. I used to sing that with my old band. A voice you should profile is Ray Gillen he was singer of Badlands he passed away from Aids many years ago. Great powerfull voice similar to David Coverdale.

Best video in this series! I know I've said it before but I love DC. You did a great job with this. I do wish that you could have included Soldier Of Fortune or Blind Man because they're really underrated, but I know you can't fit every song into these videos. I would really love to hear your opinion on those songs though. As always, you are awesome!!! Thanks for giving me great videos to look forward to. It's really a treat.

Like any singer where you cannot tell the difference between his chest, mix, and head or where the breaks are, it all sounds like one voice with a limitless range. What i cannot figure out about Coverdale is how he gets that airy pitch without doing damage.

David Coverdale, I have seen him several times with Whitesnake. Great song writer, great singer (love his timing, his phrasing) and above all a top entertainer with an impressive stage presence. My "ultimate Whitesnake song" is "Walking In The Shadow Of The Blues". I have met David in person, together with Doug Aldrich. Both very approachable end David certainly very talkative! :)

David Coverdale is one the best pure rock singers of the past 50 years. I think he could have had a huge solo career like Rod Stewart, but maybe he just liked rockin' out with the boys. He still leaves a great legacy of songs though.

I was being very patient waiting for you to cover him and yes one of my favorite singers, he's a vocal of vocalists if that makes any sense 💪. So yeah crying in the rain and the less-known kittens got claws beautiful and awesome range with power!!!

I'm enjoying revisiting these songs from my past, so to speak, with new "ears." I must credit you for opening my ears to how great Dio really was. I honestly never gave it much thought before discovering your channel. Also, I've always liked this singer too and have grown to respect him even more! Thanks again. xo

I've got a great story for you! As a kid, and into my teens, I really wasn't much into music at all. I had songs I liked, but I didn't connect with them in the same way that I do now. It was all pretty much superficial, never really cared to listen to the lyrics; just rocked out, ya know? Hell, my favorite song at the time was Molly Hatchet's "Flirtin' With Disaster" and I didn't know what the song was about; it was the intro song for NASCAR 98 for the Playstation and it just sounded fricken cool! All this changed in 2004, I was 17 years old when I discovered Whitesnake. Although, it's kind of a half-truth; because I've heard them before on the radio, but before then it just didn't stick with me. The day music changed for me was when my then girlfriend broke up with me, I was heart broken. As the day progressed I developed an ear worm, the lyrics and tune "Here I go again on my own" got stuck in my head, and that's all that would just loop in my head over and over. I got frustrated, I couldn't for the life of me figure out who it was, I didn't have a computer at the time so I hopped in my truck and drove to the library in town to look this up. It didn't take too long for me to find what I was looking for. After listening to the song a time or two I left the library and started walking back to my truck, now equipped with this knowledge. As I'm walking by my truck I pass by a thrift store and on whim I check it out. Immediately to my right was a rack of cassettes, I take a gander and it was like the music gods shined a light; because the very first cassette on the rack, very top left where I would begin my search; was the 1987 album. Once I popped that into my truck's cassette player (I had an old '76 Chevy pickup) I was hooked and have been a big Whitesnake fan ever since. In time I managed to work my way through their catalogue, from the Snakebite EP all the way to (at the time) Live in the still of the night! Although my introduction to Whitesnake was the "hair metal" era of Whitesnake, I've found myself connecting better with mostly pre-Slide it in tracks; Like "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues" being my favorite, and "Child of Babylon" and "Ain't Gonna Cry No More". I love it all! The Restless Heart record, love it; David's solo albums from before Whitesnake, and Into The Light. His work in Deep Purple and with Jimmy page. Got it! But it doesn't end there, Whitesnake opened me up to the blues in general. Hound Dog Taylor, Howling Wolf, Muddy Waters.... lol You could say Whitesnake was my gateway drug!

Keith Olsen, who co-produced 1989´s Slip Of The Tongue album, said that he preferred to record David Coverdale fresh from sleeping, because his voice always thins out during the day. Vocals were therefore usually done early in the morning, leaving the rest of the day for everything else.

Great stuff man!! PLEASE cover John Sykes. Both DC and Sykes really committed to not just great tone and phrasing but also to the emotional content and the passion of the piece. Great chops is always fun to listen to, but for me as a fan of these iconic artists, I believe that they perform from the gut and execute with conviction. I'll take passion over perfection all day, but these guys cover all the bases. As an example of Sykes really committing, Valley of the Kings and Jelly Roll off the first Blue Murder record are some of my favourites. I still have the urge to close the windows and crank these joints and bellow my brains out at fairly regular intervals. Thanks for the great content KT, and stay safe! :)

Sweet! Thanks again, Ken. David is one of my favorites of the 70's-80's era. I think the people that consider him a Plant knockoff have only heard a couple of his tunes, because he's no more so than anybody of the era. It was nice hearing a rich baritone voice in a time of high tenors. Like Dio, it set him apart.

Thanks for this one, Ken. So David C is one of my vocal GODS. It's obvious that you're a trained singer. It's really cool how you tell us how David C does what he does. What I'm wondering is, does he know what he's doing, or does he just do it? You hear stories about legendary guitarists who "never had a lesson," so I'm wondering if a guy like David was trained, or if he just was born with that voice. Thanks and have a great night
