Whitesnake - Still Of The Night - David Coverdale - Isolated Vocals - Analysis and Tutorial
Most of you know by now that David Coverdale is one of my favorite singers of all-time even though he's not a technically perfect singer.
Who are some of your favorites singers that may not exactly sing with the best technique but whose sound you still love? Let me know in the comments!
I've got David's isolated vocal track from "Still Of The Night" as well as the original instrumental track. By looking at the two together we'll be able to see how much energy the band gave and how it allowed David to be more laid back on the sound.
After we break down the recording, I'm also going to take a stab at the track myself, to show you how quickly we can reduplicate the sound.

That album was a huge part of my teenage years (Im 50 as I write this in 2022) and I can still listen to that song anytime anywhere. I love the way you break it all down, show us how it's done and the enthusiasm you bring to this. The love and joy you have shines brightly, so happy I found your channel Ken. Absolutely great stuff!!

I think even if they had auto tuned his voice or he hit the note precisely it would have sounded too polished and would have lost that raw edge that it has.

Yes, David Coverdale is probably one of the most beautiful voices in hard rock music. I've always loved (and love) his powerful bluesy voice! And you Ken is a very nice thing that you also talk about the human / emotional part of a singer as well as, of course, explaining the technical part of certain licks or phrases. Sometimes you seem like a kind of doctor-scientist :-) Ken, thanks so much for your videos and your teachings.

17:47 No Ken, You're actually right. John Sykes played on that whole 1987 album both rythm and lead guitar, and even the backing vocals. The only thing Adrian recorded was the lead (solo) on Here I Go Again 😁 It would be great if you react to Blue Murder singing JellyRoll in 89 on the Yahoo Serious show. I just stumbled upon your channel. I’m a singer but not a vocalist. I often find that I mimic others but I don’t really know my own true voice. Example, Janis was always Janis. Whether going hard (POMH) or “softer” (MABM), it’s always that tone of hers that we instantly know and recognize. I can mimic her and I can (when in “good voice”) Whitney. Watching how you effortlessly recognize each nuance and replicate with your unique sound is enviable. My bad habits (under utilizing my diaphragm and singing from throat) would be my #1 need in a workshop. You are a vocal coach, yes?

Also, one thing is worth to mention, is he was 55 on that live show, Axel Rose didnt even get to 49 in good vocal health, and at 49 Axl was absolutely destroyed and couldn't even pitch high, not just little pitch details like Coverdale, this guy is a hero, i think there are not much singers that can reach that age with impecable performances regarding pitch or live vocal flaws.

"Fun" fact: David Coverdale stated in one of his interviews that he wasn't feeling well when recording his vocal tracks to "Still Of The Night". In fact, he only managed two or three takes (if I remember correctly) before he was about to throw up. So the heavy breathing in the middle gets a whole new meaning. It seems that he really had to take deep breaths in order to keep him "together".

Thats a difficult part of his singing . Its heavy but its very primal soul , breathing ventilation It creates that bestial yet sexy dark sound to it . I use it quite too You find this in Wilson pickett and stuff before him etc... Its tiring to do . As heavy but illusioned Ken point in this . In the earlier album even his phrasing in mid lower range with his breath as he was rawer before 1987 . He became rawer again in 1993

Based on this analysis, he seems to have quite a few similarities in technique with Plant, although Plant was tenor. But they both do the "aaii" thing as a safeguard against cracking. They both have quite a few free standing/random phrases in their vocals. Also the vocal track effects they use seem to be similar. This is just based on these ISO vocals, idk much about Whitesnake.

Plant was more blues based and more raw. Plant utilized phrasing to a greater extent.

I feel DC had a great natural voice tone as heard in his speaking voice and singing on his first Deep Purple album. This 80's stuff sounds really different

To get that sound David Coverdale had made a huuuuge amount of workin' since his DP days! Virtually rebuilt his singing style from scratch. Also in this particular song we hear very strong influence of Robert Plant.

I had to watch this 1. One of the many stories you hear in music lore is how Joe Elliot of Def Leppard was having a hard time getting a vocal down and it was frustrating Mutt Lange. Lange had recently worked with Coverdale who he said was notoriously pitch perfect and did not require a ton of takes to get a great vocal track. Mutt Lange considered Coverdale to be a great singer and loved his pitch. I agree. It's interesting that point out his pitch may not be technically perfect. But every line he sings sounds great and his notes sound like they belong. If I'm honest I'd never noticed that his notes may not be perfect. His voice is just on another level. Great rock singer.

Great breakdown Ken! What also stands out to me is that, for a song that is so light on lyrics (V3 is V1repeated), DC varies the phrasing enough to keep it from sounding redundant. Tough to build momentum when repeating lines but he makes it work. Veteran move! Love hearing about the engineering techniques as well! Happy New Year!

I like how Dio is impersonated using words like "In the night" and "rainbows". This is one of the most accurate depctions from the late singer I've seen in a while

well from all this isolated vocals you can tell, that actually everything is based on being able to sing it light and then the singers put the right weight, distortion, colour into it, that is where is the mistery and mastery is. that is why i tell you, do the Freddie from 89 to 91 era, because there he sang extremely light, but with insane power, colour and distortion, definitely one of his best vocal studio recordings are from that era.

I read that David was having vocal problems/confidence issues and didn’t know he was being recorded on this arguably iconic performance. The studio time bill was amassing and the studio band was shortly breaking up. The pressure was on!

That ‘wheezy chest’ vocal that David employs is of his own and has a character. As such it can possibly go slightly too far on ‘Take A Look At Yourself’ & ‘Shake My Tree’ on Coverdale/Page? Personal preferences apply. My favorite D.C vocals are ‘Time & Again’ & ‘Only My Soul’ both from his second solo album ‘Northwinds’ ‘(78)

Great analysis! it is another thing to hear the voice separately, it really humanizes David. I had not noticed the intonation errors. Ken after your analysis, I see more feasible to sing this song, applying what you suggest to do. For many years I thought this song as impossible for me to sing, i'll be trying these days. thanks!
