What Makes This Singer Great? In my humble opinion: 1. voice : Freddie had without a doubt a very beautiful voice 2. technique : scientist have written studies about his unique and effective vocal technique 3. vocal range : here's a compilation of his 4 octave range (F2-F6) -> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kgLmYaRPrGE.html 4. emotional range : it's one thing to hit a note, but it's a different thing to also transport the emotion in that song. Just listen to songs like 'The Show Must Go on' & you know what I mean 5. genre range: Queen could pull off 2 dozen different genres because they had a singer who could do everything from Metal to Soul to Jazz to Gospel to classical music, etc And now add the fact that he's also an excellent composer and stage performer who plays several instruments. ^^ So much talent!
Right!! There's no other male vocalist now and not even Dimash has the vocal ability that Fred had. Fred's vibrato made him outstanding and his enunciation of words, too. Dimash isn't English by first language but Freddie Mercury wasn't either. Fred could speak Indian and Japanese as well as English. Dimash might have a six octave voice range from what I've heard but I don't think he could sing like that running around all over his stage and up and down stairs for 2 hours like Fred did. Freddie Mercury was a trooper and superhuman as a performer.
@@montrelouisebohon-harris7023 Freddie Mercury couldn't speak any Japanese, for Queen's Japan tour he had learned a few Japanese phrases, and I'm not sure that he could speak any Indian although he was a Persian of the India and therefore a Zoroastrian. his parents could definitely speak Gujarati, that's the language of the Persians of India because upon their arrival from Iran to Gujarat Province in west of India 1300 years ago after the Arab-Muslim invasion of Iran (Iranian were not allowed to practice their religion the Zoroastrianism and therefore fled from Iran to India) they were not allowed to speak in Persian in India and they were forced into speaking the language of India in that area which was Gujarati. if Freddie's mother tongue was Gujarati or as you may call it Indian then Freddie would have had some Indian accent in his English and I listened and watched all Freddie's interviews and I can't find any Indian or foreign accent in his English and I'm a Persian myself and I'm 100% sure that Freddie had no foreign accent in his English.
Freddie was by far a genius when it came to singing and song writing. His vocal range was impeccable! Such a tragic loss...from his beginnings to his end. He could sing so many genres of music.
I saw Queen in Melbourne Australia in 1985. WOW! The most amazing live show that I have ever seen. As you said, he drew everyone into an inner circle even though there were thousands of us there. He was the most amazing showman that I have ever seen, and his voice was perfection. I am so lucky to have seen him live and will never forget it.
Freddie Mercury had a distinctive style that was all his own! What an amazing talent that left us too soon. He carried himself and his voice like royalty.

Well, It's one of the best but for me It's definitely Michael Jackson, they have some similarities even if they are them own music culture... But for sure Michael for me It's the best, an incredible performer, a great vocalist and signature's vocal... Both they rock the world for a long time and I hoped It was for so more time... Hope It was clear b/c I'm not a native english speaker.

I don't know much about music and singing, but I love Freddie's incredible power. It always sounds like he's saying “Here I am. Look at me.“ Even though he didn't always sing perfect live, his live performances are generally preferred over studio recordings. It's not just his voice, not just about which notes to hit. Freddie was such a powerhouse on stage. Every other vocalist people analyse and critizice them for not hitting this or that note, but with Freddie it's kind of like... f it, it's Freddie f-ing Mercury. He's so much more than “just“ his legendary voice.
Freddie is otherworldly and untouchable. We will never see another like him. Also at his tribute concert when other greats like Robert Plant , Roger Daltry and Seal for example ,had to change the key of the song, should tell you everything you need to know .
The only time i recall, that Freddie "struggled" is during a performance nearly half the globe sees as THE performance of the 20th century, namely... live aid. Now if you wouldnt know the backstory, you'd never think he was really working hard for it to come out right that particular time, but when you realize he was told not to perform due to a serious case of pneumonia , and Freddie being Freddie (thus stubborn as hell) he told his Doc "ty, but i will be performing (sorry not sorry?)" So... to me that is my main memory of Freddie, the professional, the performer, the artist. I already was a long-time fan prior to live-aid, but that 25 minutes in music history... will remain the best performance i've ever seen by anyone. (especially considering the circumstances) Freddie earned his spot on top of mount Olympus, and he'll remain there for ever in my book.
Actually Live Aid was one of the best vocal performances of Freddie, he was not really struggling in my opinion. If you want to hear Freddie's real vocal struggles, listen to Queen's 1979 or 1982 Japanese tours, there Freddie's voice was in a pretty bad shape.
@@patepulkkinenvtec2403 Absolutely true. He never really placed himself vocally. Partying hard during tours doesn't help either. In a strange way it didn't seem to matter, I don't think anyone else could have got away with it.
To me, he is THE BEST. He did things with his voice that he may not have even known how he was doing it. The emotion he brings forth and brings to my Soul is what makes him irreplaceable. 👑💖

I can't explain it. You couldn't live your live without ever having heard Freddie, but I never really took notice before. I mean I remember the Wayne's World Bohemian Rhapsody, as well as We are the Champions and We Will Rock You being used for sports promotion. A good friend who's opinion I valued immensely, turned me onto Queen and Blue Oyster Cult in my adult life. I was hooked pretty quickly and now have every studio album Queen ever released, as well as some of Freddie's solo stuff. I have certain songs that make me feel certain feelings. Like Riding with Private Malone makes me sad, and Fade to Black makes me contemplate living life. Freddie has brought me nothing but joy. I feel nothing but joy from his music. I truly wish he were still in this world making music. There are so few nowadays with any talent, the state of music mostly sucks. Any idiot with auto tune can be a star. Freddie had talent, and was one hell of a frontman. The world is dimmer without him.

Music & signing to me is all about the emotion that you get across to your audience , Freddie Mercury was one of the very few in all of Musical HISTORY that did just that! I’m 25 years old & Queen was the band that started me out with music & truly spiked my interest so thank you to them. I always tell my grandma people can have a really good voice but if you don’t convey them emotion behind what your signing I believe your song falls apart very quickly. I wanted to comment on what you said about Freddy having this way of bringing you into his world .... very true. I talk to my grandma & uncle a lot about music & always tell them that Freddy was again among the very few that when he asan g he had this presence behind him he could grab you and bring into another world. He always had the crowd in his hand when he played live. I know people say Jim Morrison has the same effect live but Freddy was phenomenal. Queen will always have a place in my heart Freddy Mercury was one of greatest showman’s you will ever see. I love Freddy like Elvis Presley. Both of those artists when I listen to there music I still feel like there alive today that’s the power behind there music something amazing unexplainable but there’s an energy there I feel it . Something I thought mentioning was two weeks before Freddy died his manager asked him what do you want me to do with your music when you pass? Freddy famously said, [ do whatever you want with it re -release it Remix it but don’t make me boring darling]. I like your videos ken they open my eyes to music in a different way that really is cool and I always try to act like I know what I’m talking about how singers sing and what there doing in there songs haha. My favorite BAND in the world Ken is LIVE literally I have a tattoo of there album cover throwing copper I have yet to see you do a vocal reaction to One of Eds songs lighting crashes or I alone would be awesome just requesting it it would me a the world to me to see your reaction , because I wanna know what type of ability this guy has and what style and how much talent does he have how is he singing , what makes Ed different then slog of the guys from the 90s. I love Freddie Mercury, such a beautiful voice & flamboyant showman. I like artists who are unique & quirky, it's what makes them memorable and it's real unlike a lot of what we see today.
OMG! Influential in my life... Walking down the street in Jr. High with a bunch of my friends singing Bohemian Rhapsody at the top of our lungs and then cracking up and peeing our pants. Nothing else like him. So much unique love and authenticity still comes through. People not born yet will love him.
Freddie said that his songs would be sung different on his Live shows than to a record so he purposely changed the songs. A lot of times he changed key to a lower note so he saved his voice, this is where Roger stepped in to do the higher notes, and what a voice Roger has. Freddie's voice was astounding and I miss him every single day.
He was such an amazing singer until his dying time. Just listen to "Mother Love" from "Made In Heaven", his last recorded vocal, 2 months before his passing, it is just so moving. In fact, he was not able to finish the song, Brian sang the last verse.

Everything you said, I agree with 100%! I would add that he stuck to his belief in Queen’s music when the music business wanted something changed so in a way that made him a great business man as well. I also believed he knew what he had in his other band members, and even when they tried to go solo, he really discovered the magic of what they were together, and he valued that. He was super smart, as they all were, and that set them apart. He loved singing for a crowd and the bigger the better, he sang for the people. His work ethic was incomparable, and when faced with his diagnosis and death, he didn’t stop working and sang about what had to be incredibly hard topics during that time. He was brave with his sexuality during a time that it was difficult to show it. He granted few interviews and as hard as that must have been then, and is today for fans, it gave him an air of mystery, so we appreciate what he had to say even more. We still watch those interviews today. And let’s face it, all women loved him, and men wanted to be him, to have his talent. He was himself, he was unique, he was humble, he cared deeply about his music, he cared to give Fans the best concert possible, and for every concert. He was a kind human being. He was the ultimate front man and he is timeless. Lover of Life, Singer of Songs, sums it up in as few words as possible. 💕 💕

This is a great series. The tone and power within Freddie's voice is the first aspects that stands out. People can often only hear a few seconds of Freddie's voice, and they immediately think it sounds amazing. There was something mesmerizing about his tonal quality. He was able to use his voice in many different ways, he created many different colors and tones. I do believe the fact that he was a also a very good musician makes a big difference. He was a masterful songwriter, and he understood exactly what should be added to the music. He poured all of his emotions into his performances and songs. He never really performed a song exactly the same way twice.
Freddie is simply the best singer ever. Greatest frontman ever. He could have a stadium on his feet. Just look at Live Aid and Wembley Stadium 86. Greatest of all time.
Freddie voice may not be rough bcuz his voice is kinda soft but he has that energy. My fav vocal performance is killer queen, his voice is so smooth and unique there

Freddie Mercury is my favourite singer, I just LOVE him. The first song I learned on piano was "you take my breath away" (I didn't make it easy for myself, it took a damn long time).

My vibrato as I warm up goes from sounding goat like to imitating a dolphin in my higher ranges when I get up to 5 and 6 octave. Freddy Mercury had amazing talent. He was able to change the mood with his performances so effortless and the way he conducted his voice from a smooth light sound to a belt in his head voice with rasp was speechless flawless. His dynamics were incomparable and so unique.

More Freddie, please, there’s SO much more to him-he thought he was an amateur pianist-he thought his 4 extra teeth helped his octave range. I love when he usually sings tenor-alto & goes down to almost a bass he does it effortlessly (Is This the World We Created)(Lap of the Gods-starts Bass, next note is tenor-effortlessly) how can he do that?

Thanks for the insight! When I think about great singers I tend to focus on the voice but you're so right there were so many other aspects that made him memorable.
Dont forget Freddie's fabulous duet with monseratt caball gave me goose pimples yes he had fabulous stage presence could even watch him with sound of sadly missed no other rock star comes close
I think it would be very interesting to make a ,,Freddie's voice evolution video" to show how Freddie's voice changed from the 70's to the 80's, but also (and especially I'd say) in the last years because of the illness. On the albums ,,Innuendo'' and ,,Made in Heaven" which contains his last recordings, you can notice so easy the differece in his voice.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy you've got great taste! I've loved Queen since I was 11 years old. I was in 5th grade when I first heard Bohemian Rhapsody. And once I started listening to them a little bit, the more I fell in love with them, and I mean it, Freddie is an amazing performer!
Just an amazing voice. He could sing something more emotive like bits of Bohemian Rhapsody, and then spit venom and gave this really sinister tone like on Death on Two Legs. But then, he could sing something lighter like Who Needs You or Crazy....Called Love. He had great range and depth. Outside of performing or composing music, he gave some great, funny interviews. He didn't care what anyone thought, he was always himself. But to me the coolest thing was how he just wanted to solder on after his HIV/AIDS diagnosis. Didn't want anyone to feel sorry for him, just wanted to keep living and doing what he loved till he couldn't anymore and that's what he did. I dunno if I could have that inner strength, but man...HE DID...IN SPADES. What a talent. I watch Queen's live performances and it STILL blows my mind....❤️

Queen could create and sing anything in a Queen’s style. They created their own style, You can listen some harmonies... and you know it’s Queen singing ... with the incomparable Freddie’s voice..!!!
Even before I started beiing interrested in music, I loved Queen songs without even knowing it was Queen. Im quite shocked how many song I love are sung by Queen till to this day. Born 87. Freddy, Brian, Roger and John are amazing songwriters and singers. Glad there is Marc Martel to represent Queen today, sad that Brian seem to not like Marc that much and have atleast 1 full show with him.

I'm betting we're going to see a video in this series of Rob Halford. He was something else back in the 80's especially. From his lower register to his screaming high registers and his skilled song writing and being a great front man as well. Hard to compete with JP for sure, even today even though he doesn't do the crazy high stuff that he used to he still sounds really good for a 70yr. old man.

I admire the cleanness and crispness of Freddie's voice. He seems to get a lot of power into his vocals without it sounding all airy and grunty. Obviously those probably aren't professional terms one would use to describe singing; it's just how it sounds to me. Like George Strait in country or Sinatra with the classics - a lot of power and a rich tone that seems unusually natural.
I loved that every time you seen Queen live, it was almost live a different concert. He know how to read an audience and play to that particular audience and he did that EVERY TIME he got on stage. He is missed.
Freddie even when he struggled was always entertaining. And you are correct that really it is often very difficult to tell did that note change because he was struggling that day or because he just made a choice? Goes back to do you want things exactly like a record(rather impossible for Queen without an extensive cast of extras) or do you want to be entertained. Dude could make that huge audience intimate or huge. He could pretty much get it done in any style he felt like. played multiple instruments... dude was a monster. And overall Freddie was the entire package. He could bring it vocally and was also one of the most entertaining frontmen ever. Its not all about the vocal. Its about the whole package. There are phenomenal vocalists out there that are somewhat boring to watch because there is no real personality. Goes back to the same thing with Dio.. Stage Presence. Freddie had it in Spades. Till the day he passed. I have often suggested to newer musicians, if you want to learn everything there is to know about how to be a frontman, study Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and Freddie Mercury.. and while there are plenty of other examples those three will teach you everything you need to know.
