What Makes This Singer Great? Mick Jagger - The Rolling Stones
As the frontman to a band of legendary status, Mick Jagger has withstood the test of time as he continues to perform with the Rolling Stones to this day.
With a career extending over 5 decades, Jagger has built a reputation as "one of the most popular and influential frontmen in the history of rock & roll".
Known for his signature lips, Mick is also a great performer with incredible energy and a mesmerizing stage presence.
In addition to his singing, Mick is also a great songwriter and he collaborated primarily with fellow band member Keith Richards to write many of the Rolling Stones' tunes.
Mick also branched out and tried a solo career but undoubtedly saw the most success as lead singer to the Rolling Stones. He has gone on to be nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in addition to the UK Music Hall of Fame.
Today I'll be looking at a live performance of Mick and sharing my thoughts on what made him great. I'd love to hear your input as well so please let me know what you think of when discussing Mick!

Mick, certainly knows how to sell a song. And dispite a limited singing range, his voice has loads of character, so you get moved along by it. And his quiet decent.

@@halloweenjack95 Mick Jagger has a limited range. Sorry if this bothers you as a fan of Mick and his definite Prowess @ capturing “the spirit of the thing”. He’s a great, unique, special, talent. Really among the most! However, Mick’s not about to attempt to record a compilation of opera/broadway/gospel songs because (besides not being what moves him) he doesn’t have the ability. Very few do. Elvis Presley, Freddie Mercury, Roger Daltrey, Tom Jones (!), maybe Ray Charles… These guys were/are “great singers”! 👍

I like his overexaggerated singing. Sir Michael Phillips Jagger, a rich, very rich man is always your street level singer because, for his lyrics, when he talks bout anything, he adopt an erotic point of view and he is so talented that with subtlety he make everyone thinking of their personal life. He done it again with gost town. Me, I love the first album, especially King Bee and Can I get a witness?. Love also Start me up. And some songs of the last decade Rough Justice and Doom and Gloom. I like your rewiew. You made a special video because everything is special with the Stones

Vocally he was rough and raw, however, his hyperdriven, never-stop-moving stage antics distracted everyone from the missed notes and voice weaknesses. When it all came together on stage it was a strange but fascinating kind of magic. Jagger will probably never be considered in the same vein as the "greatest vocalists", but it will never matter because of the energy and the creativity of the shows. The music and the songs will forever remain timeless and even those who say I never liked them still have to admit they were one of the greatest bands ever.

Great analysis, just add I almost always found that his(of course with the other Glimmer Twins) lyrics are so good, so tongue in cheek, so ironic without cynicism that you finish to like the song. Ghost town is the last one. How not to appreciate the way he talks bout the lockdown? 8

Hes just epic. An icon. Hes been through the civil rights era of the 60's. I think the songwriting is poetic if I can go that far. And by what many have said, a great performer. I saw them on their voodoo lounge tour, I think it was in the 90s in Oakland. They had all kinds of theatrics on stage. They got the security guards dancing. I think songwriting and stage presence

A BIG thank you to all who’ve noted Mr. Jagger’s limited range & that he simply is NOT a great singer. Mick IS a very unique, emotive, artist. THE best. I don’t think there’s an equal to his presence or his ability to communicate! The fact that he just can’t succeed w/his solo work is proof positive that he can’t sing. His backing vocals on “You’re So Vain” ARE perfect but not for his vocal prowess, but due to his captivating emotional energy. Lemme’ add, I don’t think he’s ever claimed to be a great singer. HE knows that’s NOT his strength. His emotionally charged style, his interpretations, & his ability to connect, are what make Mick the premier artist that he is. One doesn’t go to a Stones show to hear a church choir. They go to witness a master craftsman (& supporting group) do their consistent magic. Great singer? Not even to be considered. Great artist? Now you’re talking. THE BEST! 👍😊💋🎶

Nobody can sing Paint ut Black like him. He can still sing at his age, which is very rare. Lionel Richie and Bon Jovi have sadly lost their vocal abilities. Also there is Keith Richarda who shouldn't even still be alive as a chain smoker. The band is just iconic.

There are singers that even made it part of their art to sing out of tune and got popular for it. When I hear and see Mick Jagger in this video I think about someone revolting against how you at the time were expected to sing.

Songs like Moonlight Mile and Sister Morphine show how Jagger is able to convey experiences with his voice. He sings of things that are not commonly found in popular music. Some singers sing "about" these things, whereas Jagger embodies the emotion. As far as his limited technical abilities, powerful high notes and silky meandering melismas do nothing for me, apart from mildly irritating me as narcissistic intrusions into the narrative and natural melody of a song.

I think the most important thing for a singer, especially a rock and roll singer, is its ability to come off as genuine or to pass on the feeling of the song to the listener. I think Mick is great at that. He plays the role of each song very well. My favorite performance of his is on a deep track from ‘Exile’ called “Let It Loose”.

The first Rolling Stones song I heard is "Love is strong". A good yet underrated one is "Out of Tears" which I consider suitable for Tori Matthieu. The most interesting thing happened in fall 2018 when I was doing first programming course for mechanical engineers. The instructor turned out to be an avid Rolling Stones fan who attends nearly every concert of theirs when they arrive and puts picture of Keith Richards on tests. During the lectures, he nearly always allocates some time for a couple of students to put a Rolling Stones (or Mick Jagger's) song so he would guess. One student put "[Censored] Blues". The instructor said that he is not allowed to say this word but in the end of lecture added: "It sounds like sock sucker".

Its harder being Mick than you think. Color of his vocal, powerful, stamina of his performance, the dance, the move....woow! I' ve been imitator of Mick Jagger for almost 20 years! and still cant do it....

I don't think he has ever been considered a great singer by traditional standards but he is an intelligent singer who has his own style that is unique and has character.

he has a very distinctive voice, you hear it and you know its him. He makes baritones actually sound relevant lol, he has a nice clear tone but can put this nice rasp sound on his voice. His energy, presence and charisma, he makes other men feel uncomfortable lol. One of the best singers, frontmen of all time.

Jumpin Jack Flash. I like the concert the Rolling Stones did, I seen it in the movie theater . I don't remember the the name of it. Mick Taylor was in the group. Mick Jagger had this top hat on his head. I think Mick Jagger said " welcome to the breakfast show" Can't You Hear Me Knockin' , like that song.

I think of why he sounds the way he does and if it's true about his tongue? However, I did see him 'live' -- made my way up to the front (with help) and stood there watching him very close 'thinking' -- hmmm....this guy actually sounds good 'live'. (was a bit ago) It's great you do all these vocalists except for 1 (haha)...as mentioned before : ) ...

My man Myles Kennedy is great. For content to listen from him, I would go with the stuff he performs with Slash. Slash with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators.

one reason mick has lasted is that he doesn't strain himself reaching for high notes like robert plant did. mick stays in a comfortable range.
