Jim Morrison - The Doors - What Makes This Singer Great
Which artists would you say represent the epitome of the 60s and 70s for you?
For me Jim Morrison's name definitely makes that list as he was a true innovator, both in his sound and in his songwriting.
Jim also had that crooner-esque quality to his singing but in a more pop rock sort of way.
Having been such a huge influence on so many people, his music always felt like you were being taken on a musical journey.
Which of his songs were your favorites? Let me know in the comments.

In this song there was a lot of sensuality in his voice, the song , the mood. For an untrained voice he could push his voice despite “limitations “ and infuse it with feeling. Jim was pretty angry and that was in his music as well. Also in the 60’s there at this time was a lot of happy, sunshine pop infiltration in music. The Doors brought some much needed balance of dark, primitive, sexual energy. Jim was also smart as shit with an IQ of 145. He had already read massive amounts of literature and really wrote some powerful, dark poetry. He really deeply loved his girlfriend Pam as well. Too bad it was all destroyed by his alcoholism and drug addiction. Still his time on earth was wonderful. I’ll never forget him

You mention he didn't have range. I believe Jim Morrison had one of the best shouts in rock history. He could croon, but man, he could wail -- "Backdoor Man" (best example -- wailing on As)..."Break On Through" and "Roadhouse Blues" also showcase his higher tenor extension...

@@julianleil7847 I would nominate Jim's screams (always in pitch, btw) as better than anyone, including Little Richard and Gerry Roslie. Listen to Back Door Man - he starts out very high and then his voice changes to an octave lower in mid-scream! No accident - his control was amazing. But the other thing that makes his screams the best is that you could detect the madness in them - Little Richard had a bit of that as well, and Roslie was just imitating Little Richard (very well, I might add)...

I was born in 1970, so I never get the chance to see The Doors live. But when I was a kid maybe eight or nine, I remember the first time, that I saw a documentary or something about The Doors in a german TV show, and I was totally blown away, not knowing what was going on. This guy (and years later I realized, that this fellow was Jim Morrison...) had something that I can't explain, as a kid I could not understand, but it was this strange kind of feeling... Everytime I listen to The Doors, I get those nostalgic emotions, about a californian scenery, memories about things that I've never seen, and that only exist in my mind. After a second of listening to a Doors song, you're totally in...and the ceremony is about to begin... Greetz Marco

He got the full package man including all of them as a band. The Doors was and still a very special life journey for me as a fan. Jim... he can move from one side to the other, kind of Dr. Jekyll & Hyde; from a sweet and friendly human being, to a soul in chaos reflected in his performances, excess and dark poetry. I can't imagine him in other way . There are people who come to this world briefly for some reason, they leave their legacy and remain immortalized in their works, and I think he was one of them. Hope one day he can get all the recognition he deserves as a poet.

He had the natural cool charisma without even trying, thr mystique around him, his voice wasnt technically anything special but it was 100% him being him without acting or trying to be anything or anyone but it was RAW and very pleasing to hear. and most of all the subject matter he wasnt just singing about happy fun times with my girl that most gravitated toward, singing about death and sex and opening your eyes to what really makes life worth living he had a relatability to almost everyone, ive always felt he was like my spirit animal in a sense even though i was born in 87 and listening to the doors in the late 90s early 00s, he left his mark for sure.. and i think it resonated with such a BROAD spectrum of people from every walk of life, its kept jims legacy alive for over half a century and will forever....

Jim Morrison had a charisma and he was handsome and looked very relaxed while did his performances . I loved you musical analysis of why Jim Morrison was great including the fact he was great poet. His vocal was mostly baritone but his style with smooth voice and then suddenly belts out is what makes him stand out in his concerts .He once tried just read his poetry without singing at one concert but most fans didnt like that . But he was probably stoned or drunk to be so relaxed while he sang and this I notice many artists looked like there on some type of drug when they sang during the 60s and 70s. He was incredible talented as some of his best performances were live and didnt lip sync or use any gimmicks they used today to sound better . His band were also talented as i love the organ playing in the long version of light my fire .I grew up during that time and doors were one of my favorite bands then . I never saw him as he died too young .
@j0hnn13K
@j0hnn13K 3 года назад
When i think of Jim, i think Poet, not singer or musician, simply poet. His songs were more than often poems set to (great) music. The drug use is a different story, smoke a joint or sumtin, but the substance abuse of him and many others killed them slowly (or quickly in some cases) But somehow, most of these "drug musicians" came up with, and gave us, truly amazing lyrics with a depth we rarely see anymore. That is not saying it all made sense but it gave us many songs with a meaning, an idea or ideal and a story or even a warning. And Jim was one of the greats in that respect, his often darker lyrics are quite deep, and we dont even always understand to the full extend, on what he meant, adding to the mystery of some of his songs. Thnx for the upload Ken :D

I love The Doors for a few reasons. First I agree with Ken that they encapsulated a moment in time that was freer. Yes it was partially drug induced but besides darkness and mysticism, I also get a sense of limitless possibilities from The Doors. Second, Jim Morrison had done a tremendous amount of reading and was very literate and I think that came through in his lyrics. Third, no one sounded like The Doors and no one has sounded like them since. It's really hard to carve out a totally unique niche in rock and roll but they did it. While I wouldn't say that Jim Morrison had the greatest voice ever, there are few singers who surpass him as a stage performer. He believed in giving people a spectacle to give them a release and also make them a little uncomfortable. My suggestion for a video in this series would be Jon Anderson of Yes. That's a man with a magnificent voice worthy of analysis.

I think he was astounding. I don’t know if it’s The Doors movie or just the way he’s been remembered but he and The Doors don’t get the respect they deserve. They had some truly classic songs. Whether someone is a Baritone or a tenor is not relevant to me when judging a singers talent. Whether it’s Jeff Buckley or Freddie Mercury or Morrison or Dylan in the seventies a great rock and roll singer is someone who gets the emotion across. He did that in spades snd not just one time in the studio but onstage. Ray Manzarek was also brilliant and brought a complexity and genius to the music. He was so good I really don’t think they’d have become famous without him.

Oh...Thanks Ken for this The Doors always brings back good memories. Me and my first girlfriend were total Doors fans. Well for sure, I'm still. Songs like Love Street, End of the Night and Crystal Ship are just pure poetry and my favourite songs of all time, they just hit like ton of bricks and as you mentioned rightfully, it was not all about Morrison, allthough he was the man, it's was also the whole band and their brilliant songwriting skills. Once again, thanks!

When I was around 11 or 12 I was introduced to the Doors by my neighbor, she was a few years older than me and a huge fan of Jim and the Doors. Man I got hooked!! I never heard anything like it .. I grew up on Beatles, Stones ,Eagle albums that my parents owned, there was something about Jim's voice and the Doors music, it was different, innovative.. I never heard anyone in Rock that sung like Jim. he had charisma and presence whether on stage or off. It's a shame he died so young. There's only been one Jim and noone has ever sounded like the Doors since.

To Me Personally, Jim was just this great sexy voice. It was at times sooooo smooth and in others sounded angry or sad. Even in the end, before his death, in heavy alcohol mode, as he had almost ruined his voice, it was Sooo down and dirty very Blues like. He was definitely One Of A Kind! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

So my favorite song of theirs is Soul Kitchen and I think the essence of Jim was poetry--it was his poems and desire to sing them that prompted him and Ray to form a band and make their music--and he came of age when there were beat poets on the road and crooners on the radio and Black performers in DC clubs he was allowed to see on weekends as a high schooler in Northern Virginia. And it seemed he was under all of their influences. Yet, unfortunately, there were drugs, too, and why, with all that talent and charm and popularity and poetry and all of it.

Jim had the best scream ever in rock & roll. He sounded almost unearthly which only added to his mystic and the legend of being a wild man. Jim was so far out he was actually in which only makes sense if you also participated in drugs.

A music critic once wrote that Morrison, like Grace Slick, "literally made up their own music genre." To fully appreciate the Doors one should go back see what the 'top 40' was like in 1966 and 1967....some very good songs, for sure, but a sense of playing it safe....then the Doors appeared and the contrast could not have been stronger....it is said the Beatles went out and bought 7 copies of the first Doors album....later, they recorded 'A Day in the Life'. Compare the instrumental in that song with the instrumental within 'The End'....

For those youngsters out there who want to know more about this era I would suggest a couple of books that I have loved "Go Ask Alice" taken from an anonymous young woman's diary and "No One Here Gets Out Alive" which is an biography of Jim Morrison. I lived in Boulder, CO during the late 60's as a small child and I remember hippies living in the park. It was cool.

Morrison came on the scene and immediately dominated people's attention. He had a "I'm just going to go for it" feeling to his persona with lots of vocal dynamics. Listen to "Moonlight Drive" where he's quiet then at the end, super loud, brassy and passionate sounding. I'd say that nobody sang like that then.

Jim Morrison was a great front man, my favourite and the doors my all time favourite band, with Jim it was effortless he looked great just stood singing the songs and sounded great, he didn't have to run about like a headless chicken, he had quite a soft voice in my opinion but could deliver the goods when needed, if you hear or see interviews with him he was very softly spoken . I think also a lot of focus goes on drugs but alcohol was his thing I believe he dabbled a bit but booze was his downfall. He was a great lyricist and song writer he wrote loads of song and didn't even play an instrument also the band were very talented musicians, crazy how much talent in that 4 piece band. They have 6 great albums, LA Woman how about that for a final album it's amazing, I've never heard a song from them I don't like and some live versions are better than the album listen to break on thru with the dead cats dead rats intro, songs like the end and when the music's over and light my fire often longer than the album cuts with improvised sections they were so in tune with each other

Fearlessness! Sure he was Dark, Mysterious, Unpredictable, and Erratic in some performances. But I Feel his Fearlessness is what really made him connect with people, That misfit renegade, with the look and charisma to match. Add exposing himself to other sexual acts on stage to his just not fuck given attitude. Take that package add this Dark in color voice. The man makes his singing great. As for songs 2 I felt you missed that really matter People Are Strange, Secondly probably one of the few times you get an octave change and hear other aspects of his voice. With Break On Through ( To The Other Side )
