@@barryallen3883 And here comes the RU-vid Nazi with his own cliche comment judging someone else's cliche comment on a forum that is, by its very nature, going to contain a ton of cliched comments. A feature born out of the pursuit of comradery. The tracking down of like minded individuals to share their interpretations with in the hopes that maybe, just maybe, they might not be alone, swimming aimlessly somewhere in the vasoline...... AND THEN..... There goes another ultimate display of hyperbole by using the Nazi's to illustrate something as being morally reprehensible to the Nth degree. Probably a bit of overkill but effective nonetheless. Perhaps instead of commenting on commenting and sometimes commenting about commenting on commenting, we can all agree to focus our comments on the contents of the video itself. After all, that's why we're here in the first place isn't it?

STP is one of the "hidden gems" in the history of rock music. Nobody typically thinks of them at the level of the greatest bands of all time because they came up in the grunge era and got pigeonholed, but they are so much more than one genre. Great to see them still making music and moving forward. This video is an awesome testament to their writing and playing skill.

Amen brother. I was a very big fan of them back in the day, then didn't listen to them for years. Now I'm 43 and in the past year, I've completely fallen in love with STP all over again.

The laziest and worst thing to happen to STP was the David Spade SNL joke. It didn't matter that STP were nothing luke Pearl Jam. Or that Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop all by itself was better than anything PJ would ever do again, the moniker stuck. While Scotts Shangri-La-D-da/Pet Sounds analogy may have been wishful thinking, there was some truth in it. The Beach Boys Pet Sounds record sold about 400,000 copies at the time, and it was completely dismissed. Now its considered one of the greatest albums ever. The critics were both harsh and wrong about STP and I'm not holding my breathe for an apology

@@tony.g20I think it was just after their debut album Core, they were pigeonholed as PJ knockoffs. They sounded nothing like PJ except for both using baritone singing voices. Weiland went on to demonstrate the versatility of his voice over the course of his career and I think the reviews improved. I personally thought STP was better than PJ; never really got into Vedder's quivering monotonous baritone myself, though I don't dispute that they're a good band.

STP wasn't from the Seattle scene, where all of the quote-unquote grunge bands emerged from, and as much as I have always preferred STP to PJ, STP was still kind of generic in their sound. Many songs sound like one another, "Wicked Garden," "Dead and Bloated," "Sex Type Thing," etc. They didn't have great variation. Compared to Alice in Chains, they weren't in the same ballpark, if they were even in the same league. In their prime, none of the bands from the early 90s matched AIC. I think Pearl Jam deserves more credit than you give them, but they were certainly overrated at the time, largely thanks to extensive airplay. But, yeah, it's baffling to me when I encounter people who have never heard of STP. STP was one of the most played bands from the early 90s, after those prima donnas Nirvana.

Dean DeLeo is criminally overlooked by the general fans of rock. Rarely do you hear people talk about his style and playing. He’s one of the best to come out of the 90s.

totally agree - you won't hear the dude from Pearl Jam whose name I never bothered to learn playing a Bbmaj13 #11. Same with Interstate Love Song, all those great chords in there, but it still rocks and sounds great

northeastrocker Don’t underestimate Mike McCready or Stone Gossard. Both are great guitar players but both are completely different than DeLeo. You don’t have to be a fan of their music but you should really watch them play. They’re an awesome duo.

07foxmulder They are both great. There were some really great musicians to come out of the grunge era. But in my opinion, the only person better than Dean Deleo is Billy Corgan (from that era).

The strength of STP is the songs. Combined with Scott's showmanship, they were magic. Big Empty and Interstate Love Song are so iconic and lead a sterling catalog. I can't think of one bad song they released.

Not one bad song? I love STP, but they have made some lousy songs. Lack of focus & Scott's heroin addiction could be the reason. Great artists can lose their creative intellect sometimes, maybe whatever it is, traumatic moments in their life or band dysfunction.

Totally agree. Everyone talks about Pearl Jam, Nirvana and Soundgarden as the heart of grunge. STP is often overlooked, but they are so solid and so versatile as David said. To go from "Dead and Bloated" to "Big Empty"....huge difference. Wieland's vocals were amazing, he could change his tone as well as anyone.

I was obsessed with Purple when I was 14, loved every song on that record to death. Now, in my mid 30's, I'm seriously into music production, and seeing you dissect all these 90's tracks that shaped me, showing us all those details hidden in the mix, makes my heart sing. Daniel Narváez It really says a lot when a band fully excels on their second album after already releasing a pretty epic debut in it's own right. So many bands seem to tap themselves out with their debut thanks to having a relatively sizable selection to choose from to take their best cuts for. When a band can take that momentum and actually build on that the way Pilots Dean, Eric, Scott, and Robert did it is an absolute, inarguable testament to their natural talent, ability, and cohesion as a group.

Dean is completely underrated. His chordal work/writing is way outside the genres simplistic technical demands. Pretty much every song of theirs has excellent progressions cause of his playing/writing.

The riff came from Rob mimicking a car's blinker. Rob actually wrote a lot of STP's stuff. He said himself that he hopes his jazz influences shine through.

In 1994, my brother and I went to the STP concert in Las Vegas. We sat up in the balcony. A band called Redd Cross opened for them. I didn’t realize it at the time but I was seeing true legends. Musically, they were very, very tight. It sounded very well arranged and like the CDs. Especially Weiland’s vocals.

It's actually Dean's brother Robert DeLeo (bassist) who is the jazz guy. Robert wrote most of their music, guitar riffs, etc. as well.

The songs you both mention are my two favorites of theirs. Trippin' was a journey into Scott's mind and Love Song was their best single. A masterpiece. STP was boss. I'll always miss seeing those 4 together.

Totally agree. Tiny Music is my favorite STP album. Those songs are masterpieces, damn near every one of 'em. The jazz influence really comes out in full bloom on that album, but it's utilized in a way that really just makes the tracks more interesting ROCK songs. I guess technically it could be called jazz fusion, but the jazz is much more stealthy and clever than what I typically think of as jazz fusion. It in no way diminishes the rock core of their sound. Amazing production on Tiny Music as well.

Art School Girl, Seven Caged Tigers .... even STP’s “b-sides” are excellent. Used to run a mix tape (burned cd) of nothing but their non-radio songs or ones no station has played in 20 years. “Forgotten A’s & Beautiful B’s”. It became my wife’s favorite album.

When Core came out, and I was 16, I finally found the album that spoke to me as a teen. Then, when Purple came out my mind was blown. Looking back now, I prefer Purple to Core by a large margin (Core is till wicked). When Tiny Music came out, my first thoughts were - this isn't the STP I know and love, and I was hesitant. But after giving that album it's due, I now consider it my 2nd favorite, and from time to time, it moved into the first spot. Man, I love this band. Great video.

Eric Kretz man! killer. Kinda like Brad Wilk in terms of such an integral part of their sound but also in some ways, subtle. Glad I'm still recording without quantising, Rick you nailed it and thanks for highlighting that fact! I mean I love STP and Army Of Anyone but to know Dean throws Allan in as well is just immense! Slightly off topic but to do with RATM/Brendan O'Brien - I'm lucky enough to have worked in L.A with the guy (J.J) who owned the studio where Evil Empire was recorded (Cole I believe) this was back in 2006 but I asked him about the drum mic'ing on that session - he said nothing special, overheads...its all the room! but they did mic the snare top, bottom and...the air hole/vent! 3 mics! killer. Thanks Rick you are awesome as ever :)

The best way I've heard described the pauses you talk about at the end of the chorus and where ever else, is like breathing. It's where you take a breath when singing or talking. This works perfectly when playing wind instruments, because you need to breathe for the as well. It creates natural phrases. It's something that can get lost when playing instruments that don't need air to work them. It also gets lost now when things can just be edit together from scraps.

Thank you so much for doing this particular song. When I saw STP in the thumbnail, I knee-jerkingly thought Interstate Love Song -- which is still great, but Vasoline is one of their coolest tracks. And you're SO spot-on about that slight pause after the chorus!

Totally stumbled upon this randomly, and my heart is just fluttering. I’ve been an STP fan since high school (mid 90s), and I was a music major in college (but that was years ago, I’ve forgotten most of my theory). One of the things I’ve loved so much about STP is that they’re not a straight I-IV-V-I kinda band. I have always had a very difficult time analyzing their progressions (now I know why), and something about that was just exciting and fun. Watching this breakdown of the chords and progressions is just magic, and listening to the isolated tracks gives me goosebumps. Makes me wish I had stuck with music professionally. Thank you so much for this vid, and for this series.

This song was and still is an absolute banger. STP is one of the first bands I remember hearing as a kid in the mid 90s. I remember asking my mom to leave the car running after we got home so songs like Plush and Interstate Love Song could finish playing on the radio before we went inside. Thanks for covering this song and what made it so great.

Grant C yep. Robert is responsible for the rather unorthodox rock chords. Not to take away from Dean though because he writes some great licks too. But Rick is spot on. Ask Robert Deleo what he listens to he’d tell you a lot of jazz.

Hey Rick this is just such a great channel. I always wonder about these songs and why they are so cool, how did the person come up with it, what were they thinking, etc. I don't know how many times I've seen youtube videos where people claim the person probably "just tried something out and it sounded cool, you don't need to get bogged down in theory, etc.". You, on the other hand, really are getting into what is going on with these tunes. These aren't just some bumbling idiots who do trial and error to come up with songs. They know what they are doing and you are breaking it down for musical illiterates like myself. So thanks for this, it's a really interesting series and really well put together.

I blame this song for at least two speeding tickets when it first came out!! My car just seemed to run a bit quicker with each "third related modulation from G to E flat to C"... whatever that means??!! I guess my car felt it!!
