The only pro-religious arguments I've ever heard in which I couldn't immediately poke holes, the only ones that made me want to respect faith and scripture have come from this man. Believers and atheists alike should listen to this.

I hear this type of intelligent analysis of biblical stories every week in church. You’ve just got to find a good church with an intelligent speaker (rare, I know, but they are out there) - there are amazing insights into the human condition in that book, wisdom passed down through the ages. And most of what Peterson teaches is already available in the Bible (maybe all, now that I think about it). I love listening to Peterson - he’s one of the best - but I supplement with other analysis because it gets me thinking.

"I'm not an atheist anymore, because I don't look at the world that way anymore. I'm not a materialist anymore. I don't think the world is made out of matter. I think it's made of the what matters. It's made out of meaning." This video is gold.
@prsplayer210

Its retarded meaningless nonsense. The world is made up of matter, people who aren't materialists are wrong.
@Eudaletism
@Eudaletism 6 лет назад
Reality runs on math. However, the world _we_ experience is not the actual reality out there, but merely a toy model of it constructed within our brains. We never directly experience the world, we only directly experience the internal model. It may be that this model is more meaning-centric, making sense of the world and not just predicting it, and it may be sensible to say we live there, since all experience exists within the model, and we perceive it to be the world. Take for example, the visual field. Much of this is constructed by our brains as what we _expect_ to see, rather than what's really out there. That's why we have things like selective attention, change blindness, optical illusions, and so on. Of course, material reality still exists out there. It's not all just us, and that's fine. You can have meaning and things you cherish while being merely a part of reality and not the fundamental source of it. Being a physicalist doesn't require you to give up on beauty, curiosity, pleasant experiences, love, and so on. The other side of reductionism is emergence, and in the end you get back all the wonderful things and higher-level abstractions.
@samhan7348

Actually quantum science proves consciousness is prior to matter and energy. Idealism, not materialism, is objectively correct.
@gussampson5029
@gussampson5029 2 года назад
@@Eudaletism How can you even talk about objectivity through your subjective lens? Nothing has any meaning to anything unless there's a human being observing it and thus giving it meaning. The world is built out of the subjective because humans are the only ones capable of saying what the world is built out of and they are all subjective creatures. We cannot see objectively, only subjectively. Our brain structures predefine objects and meaning before they even reach our consciousness. Humans assign meaning to all things and thus subjectivity is the most foundational structure lying beneath reality. It may seem like a tedious point but it makes a difference what we value more. I was recently thinking about why the 10 commandments are in the order they're in. The first one is "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." And at first I thought it was just a sort of self-aggrandizing statement of dogma. But then I realized that we in the West HAVE put another God before us. We've put the God of rationality and objectivity before the true God of pooled subjective human consciousness. We measure the subjective by the objective instead of measuring the objective by the subjective. We've raised rationality, logic and science to be more important than the human minds that think rationally, logically and scientifically. If we can't objectively measure the subjective, it's worthless to us. Hence it is our God. Sorry I'm ranting. I apologize for sounding exceptionally argumentative. I just put some things together in my brain lol

timwins31 - suffering and toil implies bliss and contentment; just as night implies day and front implies back. The polar opposites are both two sides of the same coin. The Great Dao flows everywhere, it loves and nourishes all things but it does not lord it over them. No need to be so openly contraire and dismissive of other opinions. They might have the truth that you haven’t realised yet. Don’t be so self-righteous and overtly keen to trash other people’s conceptions whilst boastfully lauding your own opinions as some universal truth. The Great Dao flows everywhere, it loves and nourishes all things but it does not lord it over them.

Remember: he is not literate in psychiatry, which is in fact a different field. He admitted that himself after his recent health issues. Peterson is a great intellectual, who can make sense of the myths we inherited for eons and extract the necessary meaning from them, showing us: There's something (more) to it! Nowadays I can see and find it myself. But he really helped giving people like me a tremendous start by making us look at all religion in a deep metaphorical, perhaps even metaphysical way.

Genesis 2 is fantastic insight into the nature of mankind. The “hiding behind a bush” thing is a perfect example. People think they’re hiding from God all the time - refusing to deal with the bigger picture and their own failings. And if you read the biblical text, not only does the man immediately blame someone else (woman - “it’s not my fault; it’s her fault!”), but then the woman immediately blames someone else too (the serpent - “it’s not my fault; it’s his fault!”). 😂 It’s the lack of responsibility Peterson talks about all the time - the easy way out, the “victimhood” - written thousands of years before Peterson was born, because man has always been this way. God forced Adam and Eve to take responsibility & move on - exactly what Peterson is saying we must do. I learned all this biblical stuff at a fantastic church with a really good speaker - if you want more intelligent analysis of human nature and the Bible (to supplement what you’re getting from Peterson), find a quality church with an engaging speaker and get your butt into a seat each week - fascinating stuff that will change your life. (It changed mine.)

Brother Bud First off: No, no it isn't. For instance, the word Elohim is by its very nature plural- it can and is used in the singular in some instances, but by and large it is plural. It is also a descriptive, not a name. This is very important, because it is used to describe the G-d of the Jews, other gods in the Bible, and also the spirit of Samuel that appeared to Saul. There was not some god named Elohim. drmsh.com/the-plural-elohim-of-psalm-82-gods-or-men/ Secondly: The Israelite people's origins are not set in stone. The majority of scholarship says they were Canaanites, but a minority puts them coming from Egypt. www.apxaioc.com/article/were-ancient-israelites-only-canaanites prophetess.lstc.edu/~rklein/Documents/mosesone.htm Thirdly: You assume Monolatrism when most people believe the ancient Hebrews to be Henotheistic.

Brother Bud Not at all. These things are still hotly contested by texual critics and people with actual scholarly degrees in the material. The "Divine Council" hypothesis is a well known bit of data, and has recently been brought to light by people like Dr. Michael Heiser. You saying they are fact out of hand does not make it so, and citing the original source is fine as long as you do not read your own interpretation into it. Elohim, for instance, is not a name for a god, otherwise the spirit of Samuel would not have been called thus.

TL/DR if I die from anything other than self termination I will have owed this man my life. Given the depth of his audience I strongly doubt this will be noticed by the good Doctor himself; but I wanted to drop a note here on the oldest video in his channel. How apropos that the video discusses meaning and surviving the traumas of life. As someone who is barely surviving clinical depression and PTSD I have found Dr. Peterson's message to be of immense personal utility. I still strongly doubt that I will survive my depression and that scares me. But small steps add up, and I am working up to getting help from a trained professional. The main thing I wanted to impart; the reason I decided to actually start typing, is an image. Or maybe lack there of. Imagine a world where after a mania at 13 and prior to ever touching a paint brush Van Gogh had crashed hard enough to rip his own throat out with a razor. No starry nights, fields of flowers, or old woman drinking tea in a cafe. A world with one less crazy person's beauty in it. As a professional with plenty of counseling experience I am certain Dr Peterson understands the personal and family cost of mental illness. But consider the cost to culture itself when one of us falls, it hurts us all. In ways we will never understand. If you want to celebrate Dr. Peterson, celebrate that he has found a way to guide an incalculable number of people toward being a better version of themselves. I am trying to laugh about how pathetic I feel typing this. I honestly hope no one else ever thinks in my "unhelpful" patterns. I have no idea how to end this.

Doctor Peterson, I’ve been studying your work among other things to bring structure to my life for several years. However like many other people your work has always struck me far more profoundly than nearly anything else I’ve really encounter in life. Before experiencing some of your work I was young, cynical, lacking all guidance and honestly, lacking basic mechanisms for survival. I felt like I had one foot in the grave. I deal a chronic illness that’s still very perplexing in many ways. I was diagnosed with post traumatic developmental disorder a few years back, and I’m learning everyday how it affects me while striving to overcome that. Anyways though I put real stock into your rules one day, as a wise Canadian snowmobile enthusiast once said on RU-vid; I just decided to “send it”. You know where this goes. Skip forward a few years, I started a family with an amazing woman worth building upon myself for. I run my own business that grows more successful every month that aims to make a difference for people. I have the the most amazing one year old son in the world; he’s really the reason behind every human motion I make. I find a lot of regular fulfillment in seeking responsibility, broadening my philosophy and perspective, and challenging myself to look past what I know to under the reality we occupy as much as possible. Your work continues to be the most compelling source in my life for building upon my foundation as a man. All this being said, I’m at a severe crossroad in my life. The woman I built a family with isn’t present often anymore. This is much to my dismay, I’ve worked very hard to protect her and champion what I can for her. There’s however problems and “circumstances” that are not within my control. I do accept that I’m by no means perfect, or even particularly good by nature. I can only choose to put forward actions and behavior that define me as good man, rather than whoever it’s convenient to be. It’s mainly just my son and I now. No days are easy right now, and I’ve learned that is okay. Occupying this difficult and volatile space, the suffering, it truly does transcend us if we choose to harness order out of the chaos. I want to share words with you doctor, and I know many do. I’m very confident that having a conversation could serve us both in some way because we ask many of the same questions and seek the answers through many lenses. I’ve studied a great deal of your work, a great deal. Not only yours but I’ve started branching out into much of the literature that you’ve used as a foundation for so many years, and others that my mind is forming parallels and connections to and from. I hope you’re doing very well. - Nicholas Antonian

I was in the same place as you 2 years ago at the age of 23 filled with resentment and regret, but I am in a much better place now. I fight hard every day, and still some days I’m depressed and don’t want to get out of bed but I push on because I know there is a better life on the other side. When you make the decision to always fight for good, regardless of the outcome, you will make things better. I hope you have made progress since then and have learned things that you will carry forward with you. Remember progress is never linear. You are young, give yourself time to grow to your full potential and be kind yet honest with yourself when reflecting on where you are going.

"You have to live well enough so that the suffering is worth it." That's open to a number of misunderstandings. First of all, who are 'you' apart from the splinter of egoic separation that doesn't see how it conditions its own (and others') suffering? And what is 'living well enough' other than decorating that splinter to fortify its illusory seclusion from that suffering? I'd like to see these potential confusions elucidated. On the other hand, if you "take advantage of every opportunity and climb through every window open to you", there is 1) no serious role for this splinter and 2) vanishing meaning in its personal history of 'choice' and therefore ephemeral meaning in its personal successes and defeats. But in this there is a regeneration of the 'unsplintered' consciousness, which is inherently and unselfconsciously good.
