My wife, Tammy, and I toured Australia and New Zealand in February. I was lecturing about the topics covered in my book, 12 Rules for Life (and also Maps of Meaning, my first book). I had a number of the lectures professionally filmed. This is a highlight from my lecture in Auckland on the meaning of the story of Cain and Abel.

Cain was Satan seed, eve fuckt Satan then fuckt Adam. The 2 children.were born from different blood lines The COCK RULES are the first born male interets the kingdom. In the event of a bastards child in the house, well they are exiled, persecuted, and driven away by every action a human can muster against another. The stupid thing here is cain tries to emulate abel by making sacrifices to his brothers God./ grand father. He obviously did not know he was Satan son. Otherwise he would have known that all attempts to impress grandad/God, were never going to gain anything but condemnation and scorn. His reward ? Walk the earth forever marked on the face. Maybe Cain killed abel to punish God for treating him like a kunt all his life. Oh. And the part "the punishment is too great, anyone finding him will kill him" so who are these peoples that will find him and kill him ? Adam, eve, Cain, God, Satan and ?????. Peterson personal flavour interpreting this event as a dick head who didn't try enough is ridiculous. It's his adgenda study. And kindergarten at best.

@@charliejeans2413 I think your right about noticing a child and a bastard child hold different meanings in the telling of a story. A child is as close to godly as man can achieve yet a bastard child is a euphemism used to illustrate the consequence of choice and how disconnected consequence can be from the choice which was its' catalyst. Why do we even tell stories after all and why does prejudice exist in a story. Another reason we shouldn't expect to understand every situation to a degree in which we feel we can judge it. Sometimes you just can't see true understanding because of the complexity and therefore we can understand poor choice can lead to prejudice against someone making a good choice ex: getting stabbed by a jealous brother. What do we do to deserve the sacrifice we must make, well well sometimes our choice has nothing to do with it because it is the resulting consequence of the choice of another. Some of us have to climb unimaginable peaks and some of us just have to walk down a hill but the idea is both are equally blessed ;)

Nowhere does the Bible endorse slavery. A common misconception is that slaves in Israel were bought, sold or taken against their will. However, people who ended up "slaves" were more like indentured servants -- people who found themselves in a difficult situation and in return for food and board would work for a family or group until they were ready to leave under agreement. This was often the result of war, people destitute and cut off, in need of a stable situation rather than going their own way to probable increased hardship or starvation. In such servitude, masters were never to treat them harshly or there would be severe consequences. The relatively modern view of slavery we have derives from certain groups going to foreign lands deliberately to buy and/or remove people into forced slavery. This is very much at odds from Biblical slavery. Paul even calls himself a slave of Christ. This is because he willingly became an indentured servant to Jesus for the rest of his life.
@david-spliso1928

Except what I explained is supported by what the scriptures actually say, instead of just saying "the Bible supports slavery" and leaving it at that. It helps if you can explain your position in detail instead of assuming.

There's something in us that feels ashamed if we see another person willing to make greater sacrifices. It calls out our cowardice and lets us know that we could be as good as Abel if only we had the strength of character to make the proper sacrifices. It's not that Abel is inherently good and Cain is inherently bad, but that Abel is willing to undergo sacrifice and good things come to him because of it. Some people are inspired by such paragons, while others feel ashamed. Cain cannot live with his own shortcomings in relation to his brother, so he kills Abel so he will not be a comparative failure. But then he loses the ideal by which he can properly orient himself toward success and is cursed, either by God or by his own actions. Edit - Another scenario is that we see people making sacrifices and being rewarded, and we might want the same rewards, but we do not have as much to sacrifice in the first place. Our circumstances prevent us from sacrificing, not our character; like being short of money to afford something you could use to make your life better. But this might be even worse, because now you see people being rewarded for sacrifices, and you feel envy at not having the same opportunity. So either you have the same opportunities and lack the will, or you have the will but lack the opportunities.

While I generally agree with what you have said, I would like to add that sacrifices don’t guarantee the rewards. It’s just your best bet. If you sacrifice with only the goal in mind, in some regards it is a worse sacrifice than one doing willingly and freely with the knowledge that the goal may or may not be achieved. The arbitrariness of life has to be accounted for in situations such as this one.

@This Guy Miko If you listen to Peterson's talks you'll see that he works very hard to eliminate divisive rhetoric. Abel's behavior perfectly summarizes a type of person that can be seen in any walk of life -- liberal, conservative and anywhere in between.
@lzeph

@no name Wow. I'd just ignore your comments because they're so inflammatory, but in case anyone else is following this thread: During the course of an intense and prolonged family crisis, Peterson was prescribed an anti-anxiety medication to which he became dependent. It's likely he was unaware of this dependency until he attempted to stop taking the medication and experienced withdrawal, at which point he checked himself into rehab. To need and ask for help when life's stresses become too much is not an indicator of 'failure'. It's utterly unreasonable to condemn the entire body of anyone's work on the basis of their personal struggles. To be clear: I'm not a big Peterson fan. I listen to him because I want to understand those who think differently than I do, and he explains things in a way that isn't insulting toward those who don't agree with him -- and yet those who don't agree with him are the ones in the comments section spewing vitriol instead of offering a reasonable counterpoint. If the above comment writer had offered specific examples of why s/he thinks Peterson creates divisive rhetoric, I might even have agreed with her/him, but we'll never know because I have no desire to discuss anything with anyone who resorts to character assassination rather than make any effort to reasonably express a difference of opinion.

Sacrifices are not something thats abundant to tou. Totally opposite, if you have 100 million and you think 1 million is sacrifice you are wrong. A sacrifice is letting go video games for example in your free time for exercise or study. Its different for every one maybe thats why cain sacrifices wherent enough, maybe he was offering the same things as abel. But for abel he was all in on sacrifices, but for cain maybe he was better at working and didnt work that hard like abel thats why his sacrifices didnt mean thath much. Its something personal. You can't compare with other people, thats exactly what this story is about.

I teach theology at a Catholic high school and let me say this is _precisely_ the meaning of the story that modern readers miss. Students are always feeling sorry for Cain, saying it's not fair (!) that his sacrifice wasn't accepted too. In other words, even innocent and relatively open and educated children have absorbed the spirit and philosophy of Cain. Let that sink in.

Cain destroyed his perception of what he knows is best, the structure of reality. He suffered because of it and was then lost, expelled like his parents but not so much literally but from his relationship with God and what is good until he would decide to humble himself which never happened unfortunately. That's an unbearable suffering.
@rodgaskins
@rodgaskins 4 года назад
@@eeeman I was shocked to see his change in perception especially after his encounter with God I really felt he would take away the lesson of being humble in the midst of great adversity for even in the most dire situations our father provides an unlimited wealth of joy and bountiful blessings if we open our eyes to see it. I was shocked to see his perception change to one of jealousy and strife I often think of struggle as an experience which fosters the growth of an exceptional character. The bible is full of examples from Pauls journey from violent persecutor to Apostle (talk about change in perspective/perception to Jesus who faced unimaginable adversity to find eternal presence next to God. The true character of a man is revealed in the midst of great adversity. I saw the overcoming of adversity as a gift from God as a building of ones character so I actually so greater value in the overcome adversity than that of the brother who seemed to face little adversity. So careful what perception we choose to accept as our character thrives upon it ;)

I agree the Cain and Abel story certainly addresses faith and when I read through it's one of the biggest feelings I had when Cain choose to not have faith. I was shocked especially after realizing all the struggle he had overcome I felt like if he could have just hung on his eyes would have opened to the light after all struggle is not so bad when you have faith to overcome it. I strongly disagree with your interpretation of fearing the Lord though, if you mean literally fear. You have to take this verse carefully within it's context. Certainly if you are in the act of sinning then you might say "fear the Lord" but you might more literally say "if you sin the Lord has created a world where choice has consequence and sinning will bring about bad consequences. I think throughout the bible you will find overwhelming evidence there is no fear we should hold least of all for the Lord. I think fear is commonly misunderstood when it comes to perceiving our relationship with God. Doom and Gloomers perpetuate fear as a sociopathic construct because it produces results. Just as spanking might work in disciplining your children. Unfortunately things don't need to just work they need to work in the right way. So don't fear the lord consider God doesn't want you to choose sin after all he warned Adam about the tree and like some pussy cat eve has to go digging around for snakes and such out of curiosity. I guess at least guys don't have to bear children. (just kidding Eve I'm sure I'd love you too) ;)

When I clicked the timeline searching for it, "sacrifice" was the first word I landed on, 4-6 times until finding the audio I was searching for. I'm unsure what this means because it says so much, however it's certainly significant somewhere. I deeply wish I could speak with Jordan. @WHOSE TRUth Taking with a pinch of salt is to view something with skepticism. If choosing to interpret with skepticism, you're also comparatively processing the obverse; the "literal" interpretation or view. If we understand the mind is processing as both, the "grain of salt" idiom becomes (in my mind) the most polite phrase of all time, instructing people how to think. It's an awkward reminder to interpret information in ways our brain couldn't. If I may offer an alternative, perhaps for the individuals interpreting "you think too much" as "you breath too much." **Addendum: It's obvious this isn't what you're putting forth, even unintentionally. Embrace information and experiences as interpreted, for what they are in the moment, as interpreted in the present. Hold people accountable for the way they've empowered you. If you can do this inside your head, the same empowerment will radiate from the heart, in a way that makes traditional acknowledgement appear like odd behavior. However, traditional acknowledgement has importance, and you'll always know when the opportunity beckons. Toodles, bitches.

A spiritually advanced person would ask you what the primary spark for your rage was, are you able to honestly identify that? When you start to react again - can you recognize that spark? Can you be self aware enough to halt the spark at that moment? In this way you would take control of your destructive impulses, or, another way to think of it is that you are not allowing the devil to control you.

This reminds alot of ingroup and outgroup behaviour. As Abel is doing so well, outgroup behaviour dictates that that is due to external factors and in this case God is the reason everything is working out for Abel. Meanwhile, Cain is his own ingroup and believes he is working harder and more deserving of the rewards.

It's interesting that it could be one person. You could change the story to mean metaphorically to be about a person, and the duality inside of all of us. But my Bible says it's about two people and uses it for a teaching tool that spans thousands of years, so - yeah, I'm going to go ahead and believe it's about brothers.
@AdamSpade

Chris Christian there are clear metaphors there that one could make sense of it as inner conflict, which explains why psychologists take interest in them and interpret them that way, but I don’t think anyone could say in all humility that they are clearly man made fables. Most Theologians believe these stories actually happened and they are recorded for our understanding, and that there are many levels of God’s Word to understand. The challenge is to understand them correctly, and that can only be done through humility.
@rodgaskins
@rodgaskins 4 года назад
Just did now that you mentioned it. Don't think it really changes the moral of the story other than our choices lead to our OWN demise which pretty much is already laid out in the story despite someone else dying along with you. I'm seeing double now, what if there were 4 people? good/bad Cain, good/bad Able? ;)

To me God almighty allowing Abel to be killed is the most fascinating part. And Cain being alive, surviving God's wrath is also equally fascinating and amazing. Astonishingly, it dawns on me that maybe God was so pleased with Abel that he declared him a graduate, and ascended to heaven prematurely. Cain has to do his homework, and purify himself with the help God before he also ascends.

I’m Cain in this story. I broke the law so many times but my brother who was my ideal never gave up on me. I’m forever indebted to my brother. We both grew up without my parents. I always hated my parents for abandoning me. But I now realized that they gave me the best gift ever. My brother. I love you Sam❤️. One day I’ll repay you. I am jealous of my brother sometimes but that’s just human nature. I love my brother. I love Sam ❤️. Thanks Mr. Peterson.

I think that the names are not a coincidence. Abel = Able. He gets to reap the rewards of his actions. Cain; I think of a cane which a cripple uses to get around. His sacrifices don’t work. Being disabled tends to make you resentful. Maybe his brother who is Abel should have sought to help his brother out more. Then they both could have been able, and he wouldn’t have got killed. The roles might have even have ended up switching around and Cain might’ve ended up helping his brother. I believe that that idea is somewhere in there.

Whilst I always enjoy JBP's analysis of the Cain and Abel story, I wish very much that he would work to develop his theological understanding, and demonstrate so by giving lectures on other stories of the Bible. Reason being, as I see it, is that he does a very good job of explaining the symbolism within these stories, only he analyses it in isolation to the rest of Biblical Scripture, which limits the depth to which his understanding could reach.

Hi Jordan, your teaching and insights are brilliant. I am currently in a situation where I struggle to decide whether to pursue my creative ambition in music and film. After watching your videos, I'm further conflicted. On one hand, you spoke of the dangers of creative pursuit, and how success thereby is like winning a lottery. However you also spoke of the dangers of not listening to the inner 'calling' that takes you to 'the land that it will show you'. Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.

Funnily enough this reminded me of a book I've read. It strongly gave me the impression that they (antagonists) would fear to look backwards as it would result in them having to acknowledge that their current selves could only be blamed on themselves, but also that they would slither forward like a snake or cockroach using any machination, manipulation or trickery regardless of consequences as long as it would fit them right now. In that story any person that did things right would be hated for it because it either countered their machinations or would simply expose them and yet they would shame and manipulate that person into supporting their machinations. When problems came all they did is deflect. Atlas Shrugged was quite like taking your 1st few beers in life, completely new perspectives.

So good. My understanding: Abel represents the need for shed blood for atonement, and ultimately = Grace, while Cain represents all the sweat of keeping The Law, and the insufficiency of performance based righteousness. There's also a tie to the idea of the Second Son. Cain, representing the Law, came first but the Second Son Abel, representing Grace, was favored. The model: Adam the first created son, and Jesus, the Second begotten son, whose atoning sacrifice, was patterned in Abel.

ALL of the stories of the Bible point to our need for a Savior and the fact that man cannot save himself. I like the parallels you pulled out of Cane and Able though, never thought of it that way.
@serpotter
@serpotter 4 года назад
There are definitive proto-evangelium overtones in the narrative, as there were before in chapter 3 Without the advantage of hindsight tho, the fact still remains, that one was sacrificing better by obedience to prescription (explicit or implicit remains untold) and the psychological effect of that less than perfect adherence to the Holy prescription (Word) from Cain remains as self destructive as implied by Dr Peterson. As Agustin said, there is a desire for nothingness/darkness to go back to non existence after the connection to life/light is severed
