I'm back from my break! Been a rough month with still a long recovery ahead. I appreciate your well wishes and love! Let me know your thoughts on this video! How long did it take you to learn some of these?
I had a health complication that’s really taken over my daily life and energy. I’m getting treatment and things are looking good 👍 but it will be a few months until I’m back to normal ❤️
I am so grateful for your channel. I'm 52 and have a short torso. All my life I've loved fashion, but thought something was wrong with me when I couldn't make outfits work. My friends didn't have the same issue. It means so much to me that you are defining what a short torso is and suggesting outfits that work. With the internet I've been able to find a handful of stylish people who have a short torso (you included) and it's such a relief to know that I'm no longer alone. Thank you for what you do!!!
Me too! Love fashion. I'm 55 and it wasn't until my friend and I tried the same dress 20 years ago until I realized it's not about weight. We both weighed 120 & were 5"4" and it looked awful on me and great on her. The lady who owned the vintage shop said I needed petite tops because I was short waisted.....
You are the first fashion blogger that has discussed this issue. Wow, did I need this information. I feel like I’ve been in the dark for my entire adult life. Thank you so much Jules!
I had to live for 40 years to realize, that it wasn't that I didn't look right in my clothes because I wasn't thin enough, stylish enough, didn't spend enough on clothes. I wasn't dressing for my shape and I was trying to copy looks of anyone I liked the style of, even if they were completely different from me. Big revelation. You're channel is priceless.
“And then the pants don’t fit, and then I start crying...” I always thought it was just me!!!! Thank you for being so open with us and helping us know we are not alone in our body image struggles! I also so agree that color matters wayyy more than people realize. I love neutrals, but I have a “clear” complexion meaning my hair and eyes are dark and my skin is VERY pale. And I have cool undertones. Took me forever to realize I look way better in brighter colors. It’s made so much difference
This makes so much sense, thank you - people would never believe me when I would tell them I'm petite (they'd always guess ~5ft6 or taller!) & I'm realising it's because of my *vertical* body shape. This makes more sense as to why much of the advice for dressing petite height pear bodies wouldn't work on me - I've *finally* figured out that I need a petite *top* (if I want the sleeves & waist length to hit my body's exact proportions), but otherwise I need a high-rise *regular* inseam for my bottoms. In other words, even though low-rises & oversized blazers are trending, I know that they aren't for me. Yet I bought a *high-rise* denim *maxi* skirt (an accumulative abomination according to petite dressing advice columns, lol) & felt fab! So *this* is the way to go, thank you!
I'm 5'2" and once I discovered I have a short torso/long legs I finally understood why 'petite' pants never fit correctly. My favorite jeans are barely boot cut, short length which fit my height and where they come to my waist. Needless to say once I figured this out I bought a bunch on them and put them in back stock since the styles change and you can't always find something when you need it. Love your channel💚
Ah yes, short VS petite lengths are so helpful! I've noticed I usually shop secondhand & thrift a lot more when the trends aren't in my favour - another way to access more flattering backstock when it's not available at conventional retail.
Thank you for helping this 49yo body to look at and appreciate my body differently, with greater understanding and compassion for the different seasons in my life. I still have clothes I wore 20yrs ago that I love which I know I will never fit into again. Letting go of social conditioning and self criticism and embracing my unique body is to me, part of self intimacy. Thank you Jules!
Omg I’m so happy I found you! I thought I had body dysmorphia!!! I’ve been so disgusted with myself trying to get a body I can NEVER have. Had no idea about shirt and long torsos. Wow. I’m 46 and just learning this. Maybe I can now be so much nicer to myself for not attaining a body I can not get. Thanks so much!!!!
I find you have the absolute best quality videos on RU-vid when it comes to dressing a short torso body type. I'm petite (5'1") but so many of the petite fashion bloggers have longer torsos and shorter legs, and their tips are always so inverse on me. Yours constantly make sense.
Love this channel! I’m 58 and only just figured out this was the reason some clothes didn’t work on me! I was always slim but still looked chunky somehow! Anyway, better late than never.. thanks so much Jules for sharing your knowledge ❤
Discovering my birth "skeleton" & "vertical body type" makes beautiful sense. It would have saved me lots of unhappiness & self-body-shaming. But now i can continue with much more 8:14 wisdom in choosing clothes 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 Thank you so much for the practical tips
I think the vertical body shape is actually more important to consider than the traditional, when thinking about outfits. Thank you for pointing these things out! I have a long torso and shorter legs in proportion, and this is all helpful.
I knew this stuff as a teenager/20 year old, but somewhere in my 30s with young kids and babies I forgot all of it. Now, in my 40s, with a different body I am having to relearn everything again. (even stuff I knew!) Thank you for helping me to rethink how I feel about my body and what I wear.
You're a genius, thank you so much! I couldn't figure out why high rise pants look bad on me. Then I learned I have a short torso and found this video! So grateful
A very thoughtful and educating video. It is very refreshing to see. I definitely agree a one style doesn't fit all. There are so many factors involved and at the end of the day it's about what makes you feel and look to be your best. Even though I have short legs (and now I think maybe a proportionate torso not long but with the same visual results), high waisted is not the cure all answer to make my legs look longer. I much prefer mid rise, wide leg longer trousers with a platform trainer or wedge to get that desired look. As you may have said before one cut of mid rise could be high rise on another person. I think just go with your gut. You know if something doesn't suit you even if you don't know the why.
I AM my toughest critic! Yes... my friend just told me the other day that she hates the way I talk to myself. I'm heavier than I want to be, and I carry my weight more in my stomach which is HARD with a short torso. I saw a picture of us and the first thing I noticed was my fat arm... she had to get on to me, but I have always done this. Thanks for the video!
Love this! I am working on a long term experiment with my long legs, short torso (disclaimer, I technically have average legs and torso but have heard I'm out of balance for forever). I've worn mid rise for 20 years with so much frustration! Now I have switched to natural rise in everything so there is nothing binding my hips where they dip. I feel like my hip dip is self made with mid rise. Trust me, I know how crazy I sound. So the other day I padded my hips so they didn't dip just to see if it made a visual difference (I didn't pad them a crazy amount, just so it was a smooth line) and wah lah! I no longer looked like I had a short torso. It did cause a visual imbalance that made my shoulders looks broader, legs longer, waist wider... I don't know if my long term experiment will actually ever change the shape of my hips but hey, it's giving me something to do.
Jules how I looooove your channel! Having long legs and short torso has plagued my life and it's so nice to know someone else is out there talking about it and how to do stuff and even in this video where you said to LET GO of the idea what we're SUPPOSED to look like...even as a yoga teacher I still hold myself to these ideals and it's so nice to hear these things from you. So grateful!!! I'm 45 and I'm so glad I found you now!!
I am an hourglass horizontal shape however, my vertical line sounds just like yours, which May explains when I try all the things that is supposed to look good on me for an hourglass. They do not look good V-neck’s things tight at my waist showing my hips, they just haven’t worked for me. I think what you are explaining is helping me so much more.
Lovely to see you back and with a post full of high content and value. I'm 59; had my colours/style analysed about 5 years ago and have been on a 'journey' since. I certainly have a better idea now of what suits me and how to put an outfit together that makes me smile and feel 'put together' without feeling 'matchy matchy' and contrived. At the start, I was hungry for formulas (combining colours and styling outfits); spent far too much time searching for 'answers' before realising that I had been 'given' the tools and that it was up to me to experiment, to become creative; to explore and pick and choose elements that suit me and my lifestyle to reflect me - not somebody else. Research has certainly given me 'markers' to check when I'm not entirely happy that I've cracked an outfit and I've gained much more confidence in my own ability, but this comes with practice. I've also discovered that I'm far better at knowing what I don't like and what doesn't suit which has helped me zoom in on what I do and what does. This video illustrates all of our vulnerabilities, whatever our age and wherever we are on our own style journey. I wish I had your insight in my earlier years. Sending you much love, best wishes and appreciation for your openness and willingness to share. Thank you x
Thank you Sharron! Your journey illustrates the subtle nuances of style and how there is never a final destination because the journey is the destination. Thanks for sharing! 😊💗
It has always been VERY obvious I have a short Torso... literally items don't fit at ALL. Hourglass...huge bust. and 80% legs 20% torso lol. shorts as a kid hit my body WAYYYY Shorter than everyone else... Regular pants are WAYYY Too short (some brands) and if I switched to Tall jeans then the rise in the pants are too much (not high rise). but then I have a huge butt and hips. mmmaaaannnn clothes. Dresses and leggings have always been a great substitute and made me feel comfortable.
The few sizes offered in ready-made clothing don't fit all. It's a good reminder that it's the clothing that's the problem - not our bodies. I'm sorry it's a struggle! Many of us relate to your story
I have really been enjoyig your channel, and have learned a lot. There's so much involved, it can be overwhelming. I have had my body Kibbe typed, and was typed as a Flamboyant Gamine. However, I am fat (this is not a bad word, just a statement of fact), and wear 18W/20W. This is super contradictory to how the Flamboyant Gamine is described (petite, muscular etc), and I cannot find exampled of FGs that are fat. However, I do have a lot of the characteristics, including some angularity to my face, youthfulness to my look, and a lot of contadictory measurements--my body's proportions do not match at all. I have broad shoulders, large breasts with a short torso, tiny hands (like seriously smaller than a lot of childrens'), slender, log lengs etc. So, dressing in ways suggested by the FG body type is helpful--sometimes. My abdomen is large and where I carry my weight and it hangs low on my body, making some FG recommendations unworkable for me. Anyway, I am blathering, but body sizing and typing is complicated!
Thanks so much for sharing! It IS so complicated. I do like how it can give a guide to trying new things, but you still get to choose what you wear. Style should be fun!
Omg THANK YOU for the short torso styling advice in your content!! Sooo many online stylists seem to be completely unaware of let alone give advice for, which is frustrating. I just this morning discovered your channel and am so happy to find it as a source of solid styling advice that is relevant to my body type. Also, your presentation is excellent and easy to watch. Well done! And thanks again, seriously. 👍🏼🧡🙂 Now I must get back to my Sunday morning video binge…..
This is my husbands name but by name is Ros. I love your videos and will try to fix my subscription! They have been so very helpful to me understanding my short torso and long legs. Thank you so much. I have a short neck also so grab hold of your comments about this difference to you so please talk about that more if you can. X
Brillant information. Now if someone could just tell me where to buy pants by the rise size. I've been buying low-rise pants but finding they are still coming up to my ribs. Then after your video, I measured the rise on these pants. Some were as high as 14 inches!!! Now I shop by the listed rise in inches. WHEN they are listed. Are there any brands that tend to have smaller rises?
So glad to have found you and this community! I've been told that I'm long waisted, but it just didn't fit for me. What I've just realized is that I'm short waisted with a long rise or hip structure. Like you Jules, my ribs sit atop my hips, so I don't feel like I have a waist. Anyhoo, looking forward to following along and finally feeling understanding and understood. Thank you!
I'm short body and square shape, so have no waist so I wear shift dresss as they are the only thing that works, so I am very conscious of this 😎🙏 low rise are best for me too , but have to buy mid rise as I can't get low rise ,,☹️
This is fantastic! Thank you! It explains why the usual rectangle dressing tips don't always work for me. Because I also have long legs and a short torso!
Firstly the Models' Full time Job is looking Like That Secondly even the models' don't look like that - post process has been a a thing Since the Gibson Girl. And Knowing is half the battle 😎💋
I think one of my hardest struggles is finding how to address a short torso without assuming long legs. Basically, I have a medium to long torso, but my chest takes up like 70% of it. So I end up essentially having a short torso and will look like a pair of boobs with legs if I wear high-waisted stuff. So most short-torso tips actually work really well for me. However, I also don't have long legs, so a lot of tips for the short torso long legs type just end up making me look stubby everywhere.
Maybe a term that you feel is better fitting is short waisted? It’s really the same thing but maybe it’s helpful since our vocabulary creates our perceptions. Try my long legs video but the opposite of what I say! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DgPP-qVFMd0.html
Wow! I am 58 and totally relate to everything you said! Same thing applies to hair & shape of head/face in relation to vertical body type! I wish sizes in bottoms were more specific - I can never find nice pants that actually fit well. So discouraging.
Jules, I loved this message. It is so true…I feel the same way…I must have said ‘exactly’ 10 times while listening. I also have short torso and long legs…it’s high rise hell out there in the style world. But you reminded me to wear what works for me so that I feel good. Needed that today🙌🏻thanks☺️
I’m the opposite - it took me most of my life to figure out that even though I’m not that short (about 5’5”), my legs are really short. I’m all torso. For pants I wear a 0-2 short and even that can be long! So I can’t wear low rise pants and lower cut tops work much better with me. Nude heels are my best friend as hey elongate my legs and prevent pants from dragging on the ground. No one talks about vertical body shape but it’s such a big part of fashion!
I feel like some people just have a perfect body type in which all type of trending clothes fit to . Aka I feel like model type of people never ever struggle in fitting clothes cos even I they stay naked they still look gorgeous!
Good video, Jules! I discovered the Kibbe body type method a few years ago, and that has helped me a lot. It's reinforced some things that I already knew about myself as well as helped me learn some new helpful hints. I use it more as a guide and not as rules to follow.
How are you long-legged with such a short inseam?? 27.5 is super short legged even for 5'5" as you state. For example, I am only 5'4" and I have 32" inseam. I am truly long-legged short torso. I don't understand what the "rise" has to do with this? Do you explain this is another video?
I’m 5’4” and petite in everything but when I would sit next to my 6’3” ex husband I was the same height as him. I’d happily give up some of this torso length for an inch or two of legs! ☺️
So true, my cousin is taller than me but my legs are longer. I’ve always had a difficulty finding dresses to fit me right. Also I love belts but I find them so uncomfortable.🫤
I wish I knew this stuff as a teenager, thank you for this! I think this is a really important video. I always thought I had long arms and broad shoulders, when actually I just have a short torso. It changed everything. On a side note I wish the high rise jeans and crop top trend would go away haha it’s so hard to find low rise jeans, and cos I have such skinny legs, going a size up to pull down looks so ridiculous on me.
Great video!! I have long legs, short torso, and I’m 5’1”. I really need new jean and I was wondering if you had any good suggestions. There’s too many brands, I just don’t know where to start. Thanks 😊
Took me until i was 25 to understand why i feel un feminine. Its my torso. Its way too short. Always thought That snake s look. Un achievable for me and i will always hate this.
Aw I hope my videos can help you fall back in love with your short torso. See the full playlist here ru-vid.com/group/PLJcuD_x6yBS-NHg6VqsCSiLuGxcI-jHaU
Jeans, bras, and bathing suits are the things that can seriously mess with your mental health. And hair. sigh Ongoing battle. Thanks for the tips and tricks. 🤎
