A few years ago we were in mid town on holidays and went to buy a $60 sim. Went to a phone/electronic store that was advertising sims with Simple Mobile. They insisted that we use our credit card for payment and kept talking about overseas calls that we insisted that we would not need. When we got back to our hotel we realised that they had charged us $60 plus another $760. Went back straight away and they said they would refund the $760. They never did. We rang Simple Mobile and they knew nothing about the $760. We had to go through our bank to get the money back. We visit every year from Australia and from then on only buy sims from T Mobile. We did see online lots of people complaining about this store and it astounded me that they where allowed to continue trading.

Wrong! Avoid talking to poorly dressed street people and any African American. Basically don't interact with anyone who approaches YOU first. If you need directions ask a cop, go into a business/store as the cashier or pick a nicely dressed person male or female that you approach first. Don't ask someone just standing around, find some going somewhere and stop them saying "Excuse me, can you help me with directions?" They will help you if they can, New Yorkers are helpful.

I’ve been really lucky since I moved here 44 years ago when the city was very scary. Basically I keep my head down walk fast like a New Yorker and do my best tough guy impression. Be aware of your surroundings and if something doesn’t feel right look for a way around it. If you get lost or need help a real New Yorker will pitch in and help you. I fell victim to renting an "illegal" apartment and I didn't even know until I was being forced out over a year later. When we were in New York a few weeks ago, we ran into the Subway Swipe scam but it was slightly different. There was a guy standing next to the 2 metro card machines, and he had the credit card / metro card slots jammed up. The guy asked us if we had cash or a credit card, and then when I said cash, he begged for us to buy him a new metro card with a few bucks on it so that he could get on the train. Thing is, we already had cards, so we needed to fill ours. With the metro card slot jammed, we couldn't fill our card. A quick jump to surface and a block walk (This was the Jay Street and MetroTech station so plenty of stations close by), we went to another station and found the attendant booth and let her know that someone was pulling a scam at the other stop. She said "Big black guy, green coat?", Yup! She got on the radio and said something like "He's back, and this time he messed up both machines." We filled our metro card and got outta there.

This happened to me in NYC. Someone showed up at my apartment at 2am and tried to open the door with a key. I had a bat in my hand to clobber them, but when I looked through the peephole I saw it was two European-looking guys, speaking French. They'd paid someone on craigslist a pile of money to sublet MY apartment. The photos they had was definitely not my apartment (I have no hot tub). Being such a nice guy, I directed them to a hostel in Queens. They later contacted me and said the hostel cost 1/4 what they paid for the fake sublet AND was quite luxurious.

Yes, fake monks. All Buddhist Monks do not go out and ask for money. If they do, it would be for food. But that doesn't happen here in NYC. It is part of a Buddhist Monk practice in other Asian countries. In Thailand, Monks rely on receiving alms for most of their food. The monks leave the monasteries early in the morning. They walk single file, oldest first, carrying their alms bowls in front of them. Laypeople wait for them, sometimes kneeling, and place food, flowers or incense sticks in the bowls.

People that sell swipes in the station actually charge 2 bucks a swipe. 75 cents less than the going rate. Actually quite a nice value IF you dont need the transfer.

Talk about the CD Mixtape scam. Guys came up to me asking where I was from/ being friendly and explained they rap against gang violence, racism and things like that and wanted me to have their mix tape for free and started signing it. Then after I took it asked for a tip. The second I said I only had a card and don’t carry cash they got pissed and took the CD back and walked away. I guarantee it was a blank disc... they forgot who I was and moved to where I happened to go into a pizza shop. I came out and they started doing it again and then realized I was the same guy, laughed and started on other people. I won’t get used but I know people fall for this.

Two variations on the "Good Samaritan Hustle" described at 4:48, both of which my wife and I encountered at Penn Station while getting ready to board trains -- First, if you're struggling with a bunch of bags and other luggage, someone may approach and offer to help you with them. Second, if you look unsure where to go, someone may approach and ask where you're trying to get, then respond "follow me, I'll take you right to it." This, I assume, was a ruse to get us down into some lonely, isolated area for a robbery. In both situations, we fended the people off by saying stuff like "thanks, but we're okay. We've got it. We don't need help but thank you," in a friendly but firm way. We had to repeat those messages just about non-stop while simultaneously moving toward our destination. But we got through both situations just fine.

When I went to NYC in early November 2018 for the marathon a man I passed on the street was handing out CDs. He offered me one, asked me what my name is and wrote it on the case. Then he asked if I wanted it autographed, I said sure. Then he said that'll be $10. I laughed and walked away.

The apartment tips were great! I wasn't scammed, but the realtor was so responsive up until she got the broker fee. I never heard from her again. SMH

Here is a scam I encountered: People standing on the street approaching you to sell cruises to the Statue of Liberty for $75 There is only one company that actually goes to Liberty Island and Ellis Island, Statue City Cruises. They will just take you on a boat passing nearby the Statue of Liberty and coming back, and if that is what you want, you should ride the Staten Island Ferry for free!
