Losing face in Thailand definitely falls under the category of, "What not to do if you are an expat in Thailand." Face value is very important in Thailand. Saving face is just as important. If you embarrass a Thai citizen in any way, you may cause them to, "Lose face." Losing face basically means to embarrass a Thai citizen, which affects their reputation. If they are embarrassed, they will lose some of their social status. This is a part of the Thai culture that is usually unknown to foreigners. This is very bad for Thailand expats. Do not make this mistake. If you cause a Thai to lose face, you can be legally charged with a crime. The penalty for this can be hefty fines, jail time, or deportation. The Thai's take their reputation very seriously. Their Face value is their reputation. If you cause the loss of a Thai's reputation, it will not end well for you. This concept of' "Losing face" is common throughout Southeast Asia. The way to avoid losing face is to have a one-on-one conversation with the Thai citizen. Do not raise your voice. Do not argue in public. Additionally, even if you are correct, and they are wrong, they will lose face. You will still lose. The consequences of proving to be correct are just not worth the sense of pride you may feel. To my fellow Thailand expats, please be humble at all times, and never make a Thai, "Lose face." Saving face in Thailand is very important. Your goal, as an expat in Thailand should be to save face at all times.

Great points Jeremy! Especially if you're just on vacation. I've been living in Bangkok for 3 years now and I feel bad for the vacationers who speak too loudly. Of course in your home country it's a normal volume but in Thailand the locals get freaked out because they had no idea what you're saying but your tone and volume imply you are upset even if you're not upset at all. So many times travelers are just enthusiastic about being in this amazing country but that enthusiasm can be misinterpreted and seen as rude. 99.9% of the problems you encounter are just silly miscommunications that can easily get out of hand. My advice is make friends with Thais who speak decent English. They'll be able to explain so many things for you and make your visit much more enjoyable. Thanks Jeremy!

Great advice. I have seen a lot in the brief time I was in Pattaya but YES a 1st-day tourist or a long stay ex-pat - Keep your voice down. Don't argue, and walk away. I prevented an altercation at a bar when I saw some tourist arguing about the Bill. He was getting louder and louder and more and more Thais were getting closer and closer... he yelled that they ripped him off for 200 ! I QUIETLY asked him "You mean Thai Baht?" he said "Yeah Man !" I quickly checked on my phone and showed him " I said dude that's not even 7 dollars in USA money" he muttered "OMG your right sorry everyone" his friends finally showed up and helped him home.

I worked in Thailand for 5 years & 6 months & on many occasions had arguments with a Thai, where I raised my voice, both in a shop & in a taxi...yet I never got into any harm as a result...I actually developed friendships with many Thai locals who I still keep in contact with...Cheers, Greg 😃🍻

The truth is, saving face is important everywhere. Even in the States. The only difference is, in America people will do passive aggressive shit behind your back which can be equally damaging. Same principles apply almost everywhere.

I was scammed big time on a particular product & I wasn't going to let the lying shop worker get away with it. After firstly talking quietly about it & getting nowhere, just more lies from her, she gave me no choice but to patiently show her up in front of other customers & me also say I would report the shop. It worked, I got my money back plus an apology from her boss & an onlooker saying well done to me. I would do the exact same again. This b.s losing face comes to some people when they deserve it & in my opinion rightly so. Just go about it in the right way. I've asked my Thai friends about losing face, some dismiss it, some feel it's an issue with some Thai people & one said she would lie at all costs to save face. For this reason, the latter is no longer a friend of mine.

You handled the situation very well; better than most.

Best not to deal with the whole situation. Can't imagine a clown world where being absolutely right means totally wrong and screwing someone over means never having to admit it or saying you are sorry.

Another great video, and also remember don't leave negative reviews on social media, especially if your still in the kingdom, believe it or not that establishment will go to the police and the police will come for you and you will have to apologize and pay a "farang is stupid" fine, and watch your body language too, Thai's are wonderful and fantastic people, and seriously are the nicest people in the world, but piss them off and your gonna have a bad week and could even get blacklisted from ever entering the kingdom ever again

And what if they’re scamming us on the price of goods? 🧐 This is also notorious in Asia. No loss of face in this scenario?
@JeremyClodfelter
@JeremyClodfelter 3 года назад
That’s just part of being in Southeast Asia. They save face, and you just keep going.

There's a way to handle it that I found works well. Basically smile and don't show anger just keep your cool and try to convey it's not your first rodeo. But do it in a way that doesn't insult them. I usually tell them "I can't afford that price." rather than "that's crazy!" lol Remember it's not personal once they see you're nice about it, it usually puts them at ease if they still try to scam you just politely move on there's endless venders willing to work with you. :-)

@@deerkeeper Isn't what's right the thing gets your cujones home in one piece? If you know or believe someone is trying to scam you on price, don't deal with them. In a situation like finding more drink bills in your cup than you know you ordered, just realize that you've been outplayed and learn from it for next time.

What are the consequences in Thailand for getting caught flipping the middle finger to someone in public? I hope you had a wonderful Christmas, and I hope you have a spectacular New Year!🎄

I don’t know the exact penalty, but the consequences could be severe.

that is a world of hurt you just got yourself into, why didnt you just kick his dog 1. the thai knows you have barely any rights while your in the kingdom, 2. you just gave the thai what he wanted, 3. thai is going to get really loud and vocal and make the issue into the worse thing that has been ever done to him/her, 4. other thai's are going to see the outburst and come to his/her aid, 5. get ready to get smacked in the head with something, either a shoe, flip flop, bottle or even a brick, 6. if you don't fight back you'll only get the smack upside the head, but if you do try or take a swing you gonna get the boots, multiple boots enfact if you do make the mistake of doing this, quickly, and i mean super fucking quick say your sorry, as many times as you can, make eye contact, if you can cry... do it... this will reverse the Face
