Here is a list of what not to feed chickens. Today I talk about 3 foods that you really should not let your chickens have, plus a few more that are best avoided to keep your laying hens healthy. Then we talk about treats for chickens, especially when the weather is hot, and we answer the question "can chickens eat bread?".
Keep your chicken flock happy by feeding your hens the right foods.

My chicks had Pasty butt so Patera, a very knowledgeable homesteader saved them. She told me to put 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar per gallon water, finely ground cornmeal, and a scrambled egg mashed up to tiny bites. Also after wiping bottoms (vents?) Drying, I used q tip to wipe vaseline or olive oil on down around vents. That evening they were pooping everywhere. This was the first time I got excited over BM's, lol. New to your channel, love it

Ditto, found feeding bread caused sour crop... Nursed two back to health, the second had to put down. Found feeding scraps and prep from family pizzeria has really increased egg production in winter time. There is pizza crust of high gluten flour and vegetable scraps... Does not seem to be any problem with the high gluten crust, also cheese of course. Seems not to have the same effect as store bought bread. They will not eat the onions... They have become very active and healthy since started unless the run is covered in snow... They stay in the roost... They are the smart ones. So far so good... Thanks:

We've always had backyard chickens since i was a kid, and one thing they absolutely go crazy for is bread. They would chase each other for it, leaving all the grains for last, until the bread was gone. We never had a problem feeding them bread. They weren't fed bread exclusively but only occasionally when our bread began to go stale.

If you give your chickens access to your compost, they will select for themselves. I never noticed them wanting bread or potatoes, much. After the potatoes rotted, they would eat the mush, but they didn't eat them fresh at all. They did love coffee grounds, though

Can you feed hens de-seeded cherries that are juiced? Will it affect hens and them laying? I have given my hens it before. I used to give them worms I would find at night when they were sill being kept in their coop, as the more they are outside they don’t have interest in the worms anymore. I have gaven the hens other foods such as corn, cherries, raspberries, strawberries and rice do you know why?

I have not heard of trying that... Bumblefoot is basically an abcess on the bottom of their foot that needs proper treatment to deal with the infection, not sure how corn treatment would help other than softening up the skin to allow the infection to escape?

@FantailValleyHomestead
@FantailValleyHomestead 3 года назад
They will usually eat some of the saturated fats, but too much at once will upset their belly. Offal they seem to prefer cooked. I am not sure why you would need to add sugar to their water unless they are unwell and not eating for a short time. too much sugar in their crop will upset their bacterial balance and make them sick. @FantailValleyHomestead
@FantailValleyHomestead Год назад
they can in small volumes, but they don't have the bacteria in their gut to break down milk so too much will give them a sick tummy

Can I feed them cornflakes as their main diet?
@FantailValleyHomestead
@FantailValleyHomestead 2 года назад
Cornflakes as in the breakfast cereal? No, I wouldn't think that would have the requirements to be a balanced diet
@ehanayaanrocks
@ehanayaanrocks 2 года назад
@@FantailValleyHomestead okay, but I heard it's mainly corn and corn is good for them
@FantailValleyHomestead
@FantailValleyHomestead 2 года назад
@@ehanayaanrocks It would probably be cheaper to buy them actual chicken feed than human food. Corn is quite high in sugar and low in nutrients compared with other grains. But it is probably better than zero food.

@@FantailValleyHomestead understand but do you know any availability household foods that I can feed chicks,like pepper seeds,corn,bits of apple,banana etc, will a combo of these make a diet? Cause in Google,they said you can feed them these
@FantailValleyHomestead
@FantailValleyHomestead 2 года назад
@@ehanayaanrocks you can feed a range of food scraps for sure. We mostly only feed ours food scraps these days! But I don't suggest you feed cornflakes as their main diet. A variety of foods is best if you are not using a formulated chicken feed. You need to make sure they are getting enough protein and not too much sugar/fruit. I have a video about feeding chickens without feed here if you want to see it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_IYHVCchIIU.html

My chicken love eating insects corn rice and sometimes play with my cat and sometimes thinks my eye is rice so he peak my eye and it hurts but it's funny😂😂 Edit: do not show a chicken or a bird to cat or they will kill it my don't bc I teach her to not go agressive on the chicken if you have cat and bird of chick teach the cat to be non aggressive
