Zelda Trash well I mean you have to look at it from all angles it was either going to be The US to claim that land and give them protection or it was going to be another country like Japan to take the land. Fun fact in 1920 the Japanese counted for 42% percent of the population in the Hawaiian islands now it's like 18% or something
@wiremucurtis4865
@wiremucurtis4865 7 лет назад
Zelda Trash not always. In the case of the Maori, which they FAILED TO MENTION, we ate the white people and traded with them just fine. In Hawaiis case. Yh they were badly treated later on and thats fucked. But the whole thing about Cook destroying Hawaii, thats bs. The hawaiians killed cook, and it was because Kāmehameha killed him that Hawaii was then unified under him.

Well, we don’t have people like Dwayne Johnson, Troy Polamalu, Jason Momoa, etc. At the end of the day, we’re all Pacific Islanders and share the same, almost identical, culture. I, for one, personally don’t mind referencing Hawaii or Somoa when defining myself, Micronesian/Marshallese mixed with Japanese. I understand others may not be as free and willing. Don’t get me twisted, I am very aware and proud of my origin. Think about it man, there’s google and almost everybody carries a smart device. If they care enough, they’ll educate themselves. When I think of Pacific islanders I think of people living near the water. Probably people with high levels of seafood in their diet. And possibly having multiple uses of any resources on the islands. People who were humble to a fault yet deadly when provoked. People who probably were very well versed in reading ocean/star patterns and sailing around the entirety of the pacific and colonizing those islands. People who probably went to war with neighboring islands over cultural differences. Who’s children have now carried on that hate even after moving off island(looking at you Samoans and Tongans). But yeah. That’s what I think about when I think of Pacific Islanders

As a Hawaiian, it royally pisses me off whenever people mock or try to imitate my culture. They always say things like "Hawaii? They have SUCH and easy life there! Nothing like the states!" For your information, my family's life really is tough. Some of my friends were forced on the streets because some haole wanted to live in their house. The government sends homeless people here because they get "privileges". People STILL don't think that Hawaii has a culture and language. Even so, I am proud to have Hawaiian blood and have the aloha spirit in my life. Hawai'i imua!

I am pretty late but most of what a most Americans think about Hawaii is from advertisements and TV and stuff, and usually when companies want people to go on a vacation there they don't really go into the not so good stuff, otherwise people wouldn't want to go there, and that would hurt business, so you can't really blame the people themselves when the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, Also I don't really know anything about your friends being forced to move out, but chances are the white people (because yes, I know exactly what you mean by "haole") were willing to pay more and the landlord being a land lord wanted to make money off of someone else renting their land/living space, and so they kicked them out, not saying it was right, but business is business, and sometimes people get screwed over, also did the white person know people were already living there? Because if not then they may have been unaware of what they accidentally caused, if they did know then thats kind of on them, and they should have looked for a different house, I doubt many people think Hawaii doesn't have a culture or a language, but the whole learning some island chain in the middle of the Pacific Ocean's culture thing isn't exactly on everyones to do list, and what they do know or think they know is again, because of advertisements, EDIT: Just put "people" where it should have been, which now makes "the advertisers are the main ones making people think that is the case, "

Bula from a Fijian brother! My grandparents were the biggest influence in my life. The lessons they taught me are priceless, for example how to read the waves to know where to find fish, hunt for wild pigs, how to raise chickens, how to slaughter animals humanely for food (I learned at 5 years of age), climb the coconut tree, husk and scrape the coconut for milk (every freaking day!) how to preserve the mangroves for future generation for tapa making, the different medicinal purposes of plants and how they heal us. How to plant crops and understand how having a balanced farm is so important in the long term. Some of my best memories was listening to my grandfather tell us legends of our ancestors. These and many other traditions are starting to disappear from island life. I'm only in my 30's now and I wonder what it'll be like in 10-20 years. Are more island kids going to forget their culture? What are we doing to preserve such rich traditions?

as a pacific islander from guam, it’s so empowering to see that i relate to these people. it’s honestly surprising and kind of exciting when anyone in the media mentions guam or any island in the pacific. it’s a struggle when i go out to the states and people ask me where i’m from or if i “live in a hut.” i never really saw how different i was to other people in terms of race because i grew up all my life in guam. but it was definitely shocking to go out to the states and realize i’m different.

I came to this video since I needed a video source for an internist essay I am writing (that is due in 1 hour) I am writing the essay about my fondness of the time that I spent in a poly club. While I am NOT at all any sort of Polynesian or Melanesian; I joined because how empowered, graceful, and beautiful the women and dance were. I spent two years basically being the only white girl among many different kinds of people. I thought I learned a lot within those two years but, all I got say is dang all the crap Polynesian people went through between the 18th to 21st century; and they're still nice and humble. Whats not love? P.s. The part where they said "we always want to feed everybody"; OMG that was the truest statement when I was in Poly club. I never left a practice without some sort of food or water.

Thank you buzzfeed for making this video. I'm Hawaiian and moved up here to Utah from the islands which was my home for many many years. When i moved up here and told other Mexicans and Caucasians that i was Hawaiian they would always ask things that they've always heard of and assumed the whole time. For example, did you have coconut trees? Do you know how to dance hula? Did you have a swimming pool in your backyard? How far away were you from the beach?' I noticed that more people need to acknowledge that Hawai'i is a HOME to a lot of people, with a very important history that we should NEVER forget. Not just a tourist place with nice beaches and tropical fruits. Anyways, thank you so so much for making these videos on our pacific islanders. It really means a lot to me and (im pretty sure) a whole lot of other people.

in Hawai'i, our own native people struggle to just live off of the opportunities we're given. Living in Hawai'i is expensive and living here is tough. I wish we could be compensated because my Hawaiian family owned land in many places but the government has ownership of it and it's hard to understand why we've been treated this way but no one wants to own up to these things and make a change in it.
