I just ordered Restoration. I am attempting to bring my mother’s 1960 hand sewn wedding dress back to life. It has yellowed and has awful stains. Wish me luck!!!

I had a vintage store in the 90's and early 2000's, and I carried mostly kitchen items. I had a lot of kitchen linens and some bedding, usually embroidered or printed cotton or linen. Biz was my best friend, I loved that stuff! I can't find it in stores anymore, everyone seemed to switch to OxyClean, which doesn't work nearly as well.

You can still find Biz on the bottom shelf in most Walmart’s and Targets. In a pinch you can get it from Amazon but it is way more expensive there.

I used to use fels-naptha bars for my sweat stained whites. It worked wonderful if you used it directly on the stain with the bar. I haven't been able to find it recently though so may have to go with a different treatment, thank you for the tips

One thing to note is that Biz has been around a very long time (50's, 40's) it has cleaned lots and lots of vintage clothing. I have used a little bit of it and actually boiled the cotton fabric on the stove with Biz..big pot, stir, watch carefully, don't let boil over.

Sythrapol is a detergent typically used after you dye a garment- as she noted, it is meant to force a fabric to bleed. Once it stops bleeding with synthrapol, it pretty much won't bleed with mild detergents. It's powerful!

I have a reusable cloth colour catcher good for 30 uses (they have a check box on the back). Very grateful to have it for my quilts, so the bright and dark dye doesn't get absorbed into the white/light bits.

@@StephanieCanada I picked it up new at the local Mennonite charity shop, in CANADA - I actually live there. ;) Packages says: Carbona www.carbona.com Made in New Jersey (I thought to mention the brand initially, but I had a cat in my lap, so obviously it was impossible to grab it and check - more comments more engagement for the algorithm, right?) I'd never heard of them, but apparently they make a bunch of stain removing products, and should be far easier to obtain the colour catchers at common retailers in Florida, than if I were to try to buy a replacement locally. I've also seen DIY options that use scrap white fabric and washing soda. Jillee has a recipe. I don't keep washing soda on hand, so I've never tried them myself.

This was so helpful! As someone who has been selling for years but is always afraid to ruin things (so I just use gentle detergent for nearly everything), it's nice to see what really works and what's not worth it (cough, oxyclean, cough)

Oh my gosh you are hilarious! Loved your video. I am on the search for how to clean vintage/antique sheets & linens. I think I might give a try with what I’ve seen here. Seems to me if you’ve used these products on vintage clothing it may work for my vintage linens. I wonder if I should treat the sheets/linens as if they are pit stains???? A friend gave me a huge bag of vintage pillow cases & sheets. All are stained badly, but the embroidery work is unbelievable! I want to see if I can get the stains out. Or at least lessen them somewhat.

I can't find the shout brand colour catchers for the life of me in Canada, but there's a brand available at Walmart called Dr Beckmann which saved one of my dresses. (Also widely available in Europe apparently) They are an utter godsend.

So I recently purchased an 80s folk skirt in the brightest shade of red and it bled like a mother. Quite literally. I was shocked and terrified I ruined it. I should have tested but seeing as it was 100% cotton I didnt worry about shrinkage. welp.... Now here I am googling what to do and I purchased the color catcher but Im worried abou the dye bleed so fingers crossed when I get home and inspect it isnt as bad as Im imagining. Thanks for all your tips!

Hi! I have a family table cloth - white with colored needlework at the corners. Some of the stains seem to be oil-based (cause, ya know, /tablecloth/), and it makes me nervous. Also, I'm unsure if I can use the color catcher with all the methods you recommend or just a select few. I would appreciate any advice. Dry with Shout on the stains, then Biz with a color cather? Thank you!

Oh hooray! And welcome! After you soak then I do a “casual” wash on my washing machine or “delicate” depending on how fragile/color bleed prone the fabric is.

@@StephanieCanada it works well but I am not using it on heavily soiled things per say. But they are very delicate for sure. Couple caps fulls [ or glugs poured] into a clean tub. In goes the newly knitted item for a soak. A bit of swishing around after the soak, light wring, then rolled towels. It might work well where something is fragile or has color fastness issues. Ive never had a wool item felt on my with it or loose shape or bleed tons of color.

Ok you museum archival folks, a major textile problem. I have a 1930s-40s, red, Japanese kimono I had hanging because I love looking at it but unknown to me was a freshly placed glue trap to catch mice. Hold on.......my beautiful kimono somehow “fell” (my husband admits to nothing and hates my kimono collection) and some of the hem plopped into the thick glue trap and now has thick, sticky glue on it. I delicately removed the trap from the kimono but it still has thick glue that needs to be removed. I live in the D.C. area and was thinking to call someone at the Smithsonian but I don’t know whom to ask or where to start. Any suggestions?

What do you do to wash something that is at risk of bleeding? I have some vintage silk Chiffon Dresses that smell musty and are discolored, but I'm afraid to get them wet because I don't want them to lose so much dye. It's happened to me before, I had a dress that used to be purple. It's not anymore...
@StephanieCanada
@StephanieCanada 3 года назад
Oh man, that is tricky. I have used synthrapol FIRST to set in the dye in a RAYON garment before (yes, it will still bleed, but what remains should be set for good). However, please do all of this knowing that I have never tried this on a silk, let alone silk chiffon. No matter what you do, if you put it in ANY water, please use a BUNCH of color catchers so that if it does bleed, it doesn't go back into the dress to make it splotchy. Best of luck though!

It is at the 99 cent only store here in California … green bottle and has raves on Amazon. I got many people addicted t it. I swear … it is like … insanely great. It must have plutonium or a flux capacitor. Or both. It is Legend on the purse forum thrift threads …
