What Really Causes Heel Spur Symptoms (Hint: It's Usually Not The Spur)

Heel Spur Symptoms usually start out as heel pain, eventually a visit to a doctor, then eventually an xray of the foot that shows a heel spur.
THEN the pain is called a symptom of heel spurs...before that it was plantar fasciitis or achilles tendonitis...but visualizing the spur on the heel bone suddenly results in a diagnosis of heel spur pain.
Spurs aren't ideal, of course, but bone spurs aren't necessarily the cause of the pain symptoms.
The primary cause of symptoms of a bone spur are the same factors that cause the development of a bone spur in the first place.

Seeing this gives me hope! I’ve been having heel pain for over a year. Started with tight calf muscle. I work two jobs both on my feet for hours 11+ hrs a day. I was diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis after I started having Achilles pain along with the tight calf. Doc sent me to physical therapy last year. After that I developed a knot on the back of my heel and pain has since gotten worse. Bad calf cramping at night as well. Now I’ve finally gotten xrays and I have two bone spurs on the same heel. One on bottom and one in back of heel. Went to podiatrist who says all I can do is get surgery now. Says to put it off as long as I can and when pain gets to be just too much to go back to see him and he will do surgery. Ugh. I have changed my diet 7 months ago and do Keto and IF and have lost 40lbs so far. Now to stretch this calf muscle back out and work on my inflammation. Any tips welcome!!

Great job with the keto/IF/losing 40 pounds! Awesome! Intermittent fasting is the way to go. Keto is great. Carnivore (defacto keto but that's not the goal) is great. Get www.TendonitisExpert.com/plantar-fasciitis-treatment-that-works.html and get to work. Program nutrition is key. The bone spurs may or may not be a problem..when you remove the negative factors that caused them to develop in the first place, we'll see. There's a very high chance that you can be pain free even with the bone spurs.

Great information! I have been suffering for 2 years with Achilles Heal. It comes and goes the pain. One day I can walk with no pain, the next day I can't walk very well. I finally went to the doctors NOV 30 and he gave me a boot to wear. I have gone 30 days wearing the boot and so far so no pain. I am praying this boot is the answer. The doctor said wear the boot for 4-6 weeks. I am going to wear for at least another 30 days to be safe. I do have a upper bone spur. I use to do lots of mountain running and had to stop. One day my foot was hurting and I went running anyways. I couldn't walk or sleep for at least a week. Stupid me! It hasn't stopped bothering me since. I went from running 10-15 miles every other day, to not doing anything. In the beginning of my Achilles heal, I found that after the pain went away I was able to jog at a slow speed. I could not run fast or the pain would come back real bad. I found myself taking time off from time to time because the pain would keep coming back. For a long time I could touch a certain spot and it would hurt real bad. I finally stopped jogging for about 6 months to see if the pain would go away entirely and it didn't. The pain came back where I could barely walk and I did nothing to stress my heal. It seemed like I was limping for about 1 month and finally went to the doctors. It makes me think now after watching many Achilles heal videos that I need to massage my muscles and stretch them also. I am now going to start stretching and working that muscle since I have no pain and hopefully I will be able to starting running again in a month or two. Hopefully, the pain won't come back this time?!
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 6 лет назад
Hi Corey. 1. If not running for 6 months didn't help, how is the boot going to help? 2. Massage and stretching, that can definitely be helpful. Having said that, there's multiple reasons that you hurt, and if you don't get rid of those reasons, it's likely you will hurt again. I don't want to jinx your recovery or anything, but when looking at why we hurt and why we continue to hurt...and when realizing that rest doesn't fix this kind of thing at all..... 3. How big is the bone spur? Where exactly is it? The spur may or may not be problematic.

I had an x-ray. It is at the back of the foot. Probably 3/4" RD and pops out about 7/8 of and inch with a pointy end. On my left and right foot are the bone spurs. I only have a problem with my right foot. The Dr. said the bone spur does not round off. The Dr. said it is a type of spur that could aggravate my injured Achilles heal. It made sense when the doctor showed me the X-ray and said this is what is possibly going on. I truly also believe using the boot helped. I feel when I drive my pedal foot is in just the right position to make my foot start to hurt more. I wore the boot for about 6 weeks. My foot has bothered me but once and it might been something else. I am hoping nothing. I also have been wearing a lift in my shoe. I started driving with my boot on for a while. It really kept my foot steady. Everyone is different and I have really analyzed my body. This helped so much I believe. I really don't believe it is fully healed so I haven't started running yet. I so much want to start running again. I absolutely love it! You might be right that the bone spur might not be problematic. I just don't wan't mine cut out. Can the bone spurs shrink? Are omega 3's good to promote healing. It brings down swelling right. It fights inflammation. I do agree with what you are saying because I am still not healing. But I can say this I can now walk with shoes on and not limp. I am not trying to keep pressure off my foot like I had to before. I walked really carefully so my foot wouldn't get worse. Maybe if I started walking I would be alright. If I feel pain stop. I went from running 10-15 miles every other day, not even walking. Thank you for the information...Much appreciated!
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 6 лет назад
"You might be right that the bone spur might not be problematic. I just don't wan't mine cut out." The point I try to make is that just because there's a bone spur, doesn't mean that the bone spur is causing symptoms. If your driving position directly irritates the skin/bone, then that makes sense it would be causing problems and adjusting how/where the heel rests whil driving would decrease irritation/aggravation. "Can the bone spurs shrink? " No. They're bone. That's not going away. " I went from running 10-15 miles every other day, not even walking. " Bone spurs don't develop randomly nor by accident. They develop because of forces placed upon the body. I assert that if you want to get back to running, you need to fix the causative factors that caused the pain and and the bone spur. WHich is the tendonitis dynamic: too tight muscle and connective tissue, lack of nutrition, inflammation process....that decreases your body's ability to function correctly, which causes adaptations and compensations to develop, that causes force to be absorbed in places it should be, which causes among other things...bone spurs.

Great video! I once got stuck on the side of a mountain (hiking whilst out of shape, not stretching, etc). It got pitch dark so I made myself keep moving because I didn’t know what waited for me in the dark. Long story short, my calf muscles were tight for several weeks after, and I believe that’s what ultimately led to the bone spur that developed at the back of my heel. Dr. said that short of surgery, the best I could do was stretch and take it easy. I’m not a fan of the surgery idea so for now I’m just stretching.
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 3 года назад
The body shapes itself to the forces placed upon it. So tight lower legs (long story short) cause bone spurs. The bad news is, only surgery can remove it. The good news is, the bone spur is unlikely to be the actual source of the pain. Reverse the tightness (removing the bone spur developing force, and other negatives, long story short) and 'heel spur pain' should go away. The doctor was only correct in that, 'rest and stretching and then surgery when that fails' are the only tools in his/her tool box, so was all he knew to recommend. Surprised that physical therapy wasn't a recommendation (sending you there and hoping they fix the problem, which is unlikely).

1. Why are you wearing a boot? Because of the bone spurs? If so, how is a boot supposed to help? 2. There's no nutrition specific for bone spurs, but lack of nutrition is part of the dynamic that casues bone spur formation. 3. Are the bone spurs actually causing pain etc? Or are they just being pointed at as the bad guy because they're there?

You'd have to ask a doctdor about uric acid level, as I have no way of knowing or even guessing. Sounds like insertional achilles tendonitis, so tightness inflammation and lack of nutrition are causing too much pull on the attachment and it is getting very unhappy. No bone spur is a good thing. I went to a podiatrist because of heel pain in back of both of my heels. Behind each heel there is a lump. Because of this I suspected Heel Bursitis. After ex rays it was concluded I have both heel bursitis and heel spurs. I've had this pain for over 6 months. Ok, so if my pain is caused mostly by the bursitis, shouldn't have gone away on it's own by now? From what I understand bursitis is temporary. The doctor said short of surgery to exercise,use ice packs and take ibuprofen which I have been but it doesn't seem to much. I'm 60 years old and alone and work full time but the work isn't strenuous. I just got through paying off a kidney stone operation so I'm trying to avoid getting another surgery. Any other suggestions?
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 3 года назад
Bursitis isn't necessarily a temporary thing. In a perfect world it shows up and then goes away, but in the real world, various factors work together to make the pain and inflammation happen, and they're still in place and get worse while you have bad symptoms. An inflamed bursa is a stubborn, slow to heal/quick to anger kind of animal.And the bursa is a symptom, not the cause. My suggestion as always is to reverse the multiple factors causing the symptoms with a complete plan of attack. i.e. www.TendonitisExpert.com/reversing-achilles-tendonitis.html Ironically, the tendonitis dynamic points to a lack of magnesium. So does kidney stone formation.

What are your thoughts on ESWT? I'm told it works well on chronic tendinous. Breaks up scar tissue and promote new tissue growth.
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 3 года назад
My thoughts on shock wave therapy are, in short: 1. Why use swt on the tendon when the tendon is a symptom, not the problem. 2. Are you sure there's scar tissue? Do you need new tissue growth? (Has there been a rip or tear on the tendon?)(Are you sure there's tendinosis? If so, what caused it, and how will SWT fix it?) 3. SWT ignores 2 of the three causes of tendonitis related tendon pain, and may or may not be helpful on the third (tightness). 4 Heel spurs aren't going away without surgery. SWT isn't fixing that. I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying that while it may help in some part, it will be entirely unhelpful in other parts.

@@TendonitisExpert thank you for the information. I'm being told the bone spur is not the problem. In your opinion it would be wasted money to go forward with the procedure. I've done the 6 months of concervtive therapy without any significant improvement. What would you suggest as the next step
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 3 года назад
The bone spur may be 'a' problem (if it's big enough and grinding into tendon), but usually bone spurs aren't a problem nor actually the source of pain. And shockwave isn't going to get rid of a bone spur anyway. If they're going to 'massage' the muscles with the shockwave tool, that may work out. Some bodies are okay with the very rough impacts, some recoil in more pain and tightness. It's probably worth a try, just to see what happens. It's not a fix per se, but may be helpful. It's not a fix, because tightness is just one of three main causes, as per the video. If they're going to shockwave the tendon, I personally would be a hard no to that. If only because it's not going to fix anything, and may cause more problems depending on your specific scenario. Anybody that focuses on the tendon is a hundred miles off course.

@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 2 года назад
Muscle tightness is the primary factor, and what causes the bone spur formation. Before surgery, try eliminating the tightness and see how things are. Might not need surgery at all. Bon spurs generally aren't the problem, they're a symptom that gets all the attention and all the blame.

@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 2 года назад
I don't know if the spur is touching/affecting/damaging the tendon, but it sounds like you have just enough inflammation process that the anti-inflammatories temporarily removed the pain. It will return. Why didn't the doctor do different views with the xray?

So what do u suggest : i do different. X-Ray views or just stop taking the anti inflammatory and see if pain comes back If pain comes back does it mean that Spur is affecting the tendon ?
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 2 года назад
I said pain/symptoms go away/come back. Not the same thing as the problem, or the bone spur, going away/coming back. So the xray wasn't 'from above'? If it's side view, it should show the relationship of the bone spur to the tendon (can't see tendons very well in xrays, but still). Regardless, if you can't visualize what's happening, it might be worth to get a different angle/view. You can't take anti-inflammatories forever, and they don't fix anything, so yes, experiment with stopping and see what happens to symptoms. If pain comes back, that doesn't mean the spur is affecting the tendon, nor does it mean it isn't. If the spur isn't pushing into/damging tendon, it's not the problem. The problem is the tendonitis dynamic and the lack of functionality that is causing the bone spur and the pain.

What is a great way to decrease tightness in the calf muscles
@TendonitisExpert
@TendonitisExpert 3 года назад
Start with stretching. If that helps, and/or helps for any length of time, great. When it doesn't, then you're into tendonitis dyanmic territory, meaning, too much tightness held too tight by inflammation process and lack of nutrition (muscle can't relax so stretching doesn't help much and can be problematic/cause more problem). At which point, I recommend the Plantar Fasciitis Treatment That Works or the Reversing Achilles Tendonitis program. www.TendonitisExpert.com/plantar-fasciitis-treatment-that-works.html www.TendonitisExpert.com/reversing-achilles-tendonitis.html

If high impact increases symptoms, then yes stopping is probably smart. But rest is not a fix, so I'd get to work reversing the causes of the bone spur, which is the tendonitis dynamic (too tight muscle and connective tissue, inflammation process, lack of nutrition, which decreases structure's ability fo function, so it's not absorbing force, that force has to go somewhere, which is where the bone spur develops).

"This video is misleading and not too helpful." If you don't actually watch the video, if you don't actually pay attention, then yes, I can see how that would be your experience.

I have bone spur for 10 days now and i feel it while walking with shoes because it hurts. Walking barefoot- no problem. But my left foot is having a falling arch after getting exhausted for a bit and thats very painful. My left foot is fcking cursed i had calcification on the knee (jumpers knee or Shlater) and healed after 2 years. Now i have falling arch and now that bone spur.???

Do you mean you've been hurting for ten days and think it's a bone spur that's causing it? Bone spurs don't go from zero to full bone spur in ten days.... Where is it exactly? They key is, 'exhausted'. Muscles aren't working correctly, are already fatigued, and can't do their jobs. Thus, falling arche. Same foot as the bone spur?
