Around the time of King Stephen, a story was told of two children appearing one day in the village of Woolpit, speaking a strange language, wearing strange clothes....and with GREEN skin? What was going on? Could aliens have visited medieval Britain? Were fairies dropping their kids off on a jaunt in the human world? Or...could there be a rational explanation behind this strange tale? We'll take a look at what lies behind the story of the Green Children of Woolpit in this video...

a "green cheese" (freshly made) is absolutely white so I am going for them being albino and the colour mystery being down to that (then very common) usage of green meaning young and pale

Oooh, I like that suggestion! That still makes the description of St Martin's Land weird, though, but I think that part is definite nonsense. 😂

I've always loved spooky stories and this one is among my favourites. It may be all made up but also there might be some truth to it. It's fascinating the symbolism on death, life and resurrection in it. Your engaging storytelling is brilliant and makes it even more enjoyable. I must confess I love dark themes and mysteries. Thank you and Happy Halloween 🎃💀🦇👻🍂

Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊 I must admit, I do love when I get to go slightly off-centre and mix a bit of spookiness with history at this time of year! And I agree, I think the symbolism of the folklore behind the tale is probably just as interesting as the possibility of there being any truth to the story.

I remember reading about a family whose skin color was green due to some kind of medical resin. I think they lived in the Appalachian mountains
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople 7 месяцев назад
Yes, I think they had slightly blue skin in that case? Really interesting in that the first couple from that family who met a few hundred years back both had a particular recessive gene, and four of their seven children had blue skin. Apparently it's a condition that in high amounts can cause heart problems, but the children didn't, they had just enough to make them blue, but they were all healthy. And then obviously a small community means there were many people who had the recessive gene, and so it continued for quite a few generations! I think they were known as the 'Blue Fugates'? 🤔

such an interesting idea for Halloween👏👏👏but I wish you could go further than England for more spooky stories! either way, at first the girl was able to recover, get married and live on her life, I say they must have been suffering from some weird illness, but since illness wasn't limited to only one person during the medieval times, and other people likely would suffer the same illness which they did and we should've had more green people from that timeline, doubts come out, especially with the kind of story which the girl said and how you referenced Wizard Of Oz😁there doubts become stronger. maybe she was hallucinating or...who knows, but since even on the date there's doubts, while the event happens during The Anarchy and events of that time aren't exactly legends and have clear dates, I like to say, this one was also one of the stories told to children in order to prevent them from whatever that was considered unusual during that time
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople 7 месяцев назад
I agree that it definitely could have been a tale warning children somehow not to wander off and such - that reminds me of the 'Water Hags', where children were told a witch lived in the bottom of ponds who would grab them if they got too close to the edge. Of course, it was just a way to stop them going in and drowning!

@@HistorysForgottenPeople It seems like the algorithm doesn’t want you deviate, shame really. I love your videos regardless! You have a beautiful voice and I have been loving your series on The Wars of The Roses. Quick question, I am from Dublin and was told the story by my, Nan. Considering the timeframe it comes from and both Islands shared Celtic roots. I always believed it was a much older folktale that got written down in the medieval period. I always assumed it was about the Celts. The monks who did most of the writing in the medieval period, had some wild imaginations at times. I would love to know your thoughts?

I love this story! A mystery... As History Calling says, some parts of the story were obviously false, but there's always the (disapointing) possibility that it is all fancy- I like to believe at least a little is true...
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople 7 месяцев назад
Wouldn't it be fun if just some of it could be true? 😅 I mean, I'm willing to accept two youngsters turned up and a villager with a vivid imagination came up with the story, but that's about it, I think.

@@HistorysForgottenPeople Who knows, maybe they had some sort of anemia which cleared up w a better diet (gotta give credit where credit's due, this suggestion has been straight ou coppied from HC lol), and spoke some foreign language, but they (sadly) didn't come from a land where the sun didn't rise or all were green...

As for the question, in memory of the great Matthew Perry, did you ever watche "Friends"? And, if so, who is your favourite character? Mine is Chandler, and my favourite actor of the six was also Matty, so it has been quite a meh day :')
@HistorysForgottenPeople
@HistorysForgottenPeople 7 месяцев назад
Oh no, I didn't know Matthew Perry had died! RIP. 😔 I loved Friends, although I watched it probably a few years later than everyone else! Chandler was definitely one of my favourites, although I think my absolute favourite was probably Monica, as I share a lot of personality traits (both good and bad! 😂) with the character. Having said that, the funniest episodes were nearly always the ones with Chandler and Joey playing off against each other.

@@HistorysForgottenPeople Yes, he died yesterday night (UK and Portugal time, I think it was like 4 pm there in LA) :( It's just so strange, I'm still in denial 😭 I love Monica too haha, she's my favourite of the girls- one can't expect any of them to be perfect though, they are caricatures of real traits, after all :) Hope he is at peace now, for he seemed not to get much during his life (though he continued strong!)
