📺 Episode 2: • Did Obama Actually Cre... - OUT NOW
On Tuesday 16th June 2015, Donald Trump, flanked by Melania in a beautiful white dress, came down the escalator at Trump Tower and before a crowded atrium announced that he would be running for president. Famous for being a businessman and the host of The Apprentice, everybody wrote him off. This was just a gimmick, he couldn’t win. However, he quickly established himself as the favourite for the nomination. Radical, straight-talking, and entertaining, he energised large sections of the Republican base. He blew away arch-establishment figures like Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio, and the more radical anti-Washington candidate Ted Cruz. Despite being a polarising figure right from the start, he turned the party upside down and on Tuesday 19th July 2016, Donald Trump was declared the official Republican Presidential candidate with 14,000,000 votes, the most received by any candidate in Republican primary history.
In the first episode of The Rest is Politics: US’ series on How Donald Trump Won the White House, listen as Anthony and Katty look at how he won the Republican nomination and changed the party forever.

I have to say this is the best exposition on Trump's ascension I have ever seen. I can't count the number of times (and it keeps happening even today) when I ask myself how in the hell this stain on humanity is continuing to be a force in political circles. I think I understand the proto-MAGA much much better now, and I am very much looking forward to the next 2 episodes. My guess is you decided to explain it as if you were talking to a grade school student, which allowed me to follow along. Please keep things like this coming after the completion of the series - you have something here.

Brilliant episode, I'm really looking forward to the next three. It was a great idea to do this series, whoever thought of it. Both Katty□ and Anthony□ have great insights and personality and brilliant comradery together. I do hope they do more of these in-depth series and continue the podcast even after the election. I could listen to them all day. The production (pictures of people, illustration of timelines etc) really helped the narrative too. I really enjoyed it.😀

I'm a Brit from Surrey 👑 but live in Oklahoma 🐃 and love to hear Katty more eloquently describe my views! I also love Anthony, he has a blend of confidence and humility, intelligence and comedic skill who time and again says insightful things that other's miss. So good to find two really smart people that mesh with my own outlook. This medium is turning out so much better than the well-funded cable shows. This episode had great production, adding a brief clip, so we get reminded visually not just orally is very helpful.

Tony, in analising what made Americans tired of the govt in Washington, you do not talk about the damage done by Ross Limbagh, and by Newt Gingrich, who famously vowed to Obama that he would never pass any legislation by Democrats. These two men did irreparable harm not only to the US government, but to the functioning of the US Govt for the benefit of the American public.

The problem with this analysis is that it is too cerebral. The attraction of Trump was emotional and appealed to the lizard brain, it was at core about the lower levels of Maslow's hierarchy, and but it's nature that is primeval and not always wholly rational. We all think Trump is a byffoon, but the man knows about human nature and leverage.

So is the moral of the story is to do away with the 2-party system? Americans are crying out for more choices. Ross Perot's results in that election were an expression of the desire for more choice, yet both parties colluded and gave the people the opposite. Monopolies on power don't sound very democratic. In Canada, we have at least 5 parties. Yes, the main ones are the Conservatives and the Liberals but hopefully the other parties serve to limit too much power in any one party. Politicians are also forced to work together, unlike how the Republicans basically held Obama's government hostage. I think the USA has just gotten too big to be governed by one party.

Good episode. BUT, you'all are still looking at this as reasonable people with some logic involved. I am a Lincoln, T Roosevelt, Eisenhower kinda republican. And I looked at all this much as you do. But all the Trumpers around me (who are rabid) do not care about most of this. They are hooked on his personality. It's a cult of personality. Very good episode. First I thought do we really need another look back on how Trump came into power, but the way it's done here is interesting and enriching. Just a minor comment on what Ms. Kay said about "powerful politicians" trying to shut her down during an interview. I think those two who tried were not nor more powerful - in my view the real powerful people would not resort to something like this, they would simply try to counter things unpleasant to their ears with equanimity, arrogance or emotionality, but not in trying to keep the moderator silent. They'd display enough self-confidence to endure situations like these.
