Former oarsman here, who spent hundreds of hours on Concept 2 rowers over the last 17 years and tested most of the magnetic/water/air variants when choosing a home gym. It is one of the few exercise machines that comes close to a global standard, so no matter where you train, you’ll find the familiarity factor. This means you can compare your workouts with anyone else using a concept 2, or swap training programs, or compete online. They are robust, hold their resale value, and easy to maintain, so for me, it was a purchase based on all those aspects. Great online support for training logs, tuition and even fitness programs. Good review!

I drink water mostly, but I row with air. Concept 2 is some of the best money I’ve ever spent. Simple design, lightweight, and has all I could ever want in the metrics. I row exclusively to your Training Tall workouts and am going to purchase your JustRow app soon. Thanks for your enthusiasm, encouragement, and love of rowing. I’m a month in and have lost 10 lbs. and feel better than I have in years. Thanks again.

Previously a fitness instructor in my mid twenties to mid thirties I was always in great shape and very active. Then hit mid forties ending up with severe osteoarthritis in both big toes. The last 2 years crippling pain and loss of function, having to use a walking stick and gained probably over 10kgs add to that pre-menopause. I feel miserable at what I now look like. I had fusion surgery 2 months ago and am finally able to walk without chronic pain. I am on a personal mission to get my fitness back, get in shape and lose that unwanted weight but need to be careful not to damage my joints so a rower is the perfect option. I wanted a rower 5 years ago, I finally got one and this channel. I knew that I wanted the concept 2 but couldn't buy one where I live, ended up with a Bodyworx KRX950 which is pretty much the same as the C2. Great channel very informative content. I will keep watching. Thanks

I’m so glad I found your channel. I discovered rowing from my old apartments gym (they had a water rower). I started incorporating it into my workouts and would use it as a warm up before hitting the skatepark and ripping my BMX bike hard. I subscribed to a nearby gym (they have concept 2’s) as my current apartment lacks a rower. I have recently started inviting my friends to join me and we race it out anywhere from 2k to 10k. Once I started racing my buddies, I went from rowing for good cardiovascular health to becoming obsessed with the thrill of the race. I reached out to a local club and I can’t wait to get out on the water and keep progressing! Hopefully going get a concept 2 by the end of the month! I love your videos that teach technique as it allows me to become more efficient, and it gives me the ability to guide my friends how to row properly. As a side note to anyone who reads this and has a flexible spending account through your work, you can have your doctor write a letter of medical necessity for workout equipment. if you can provide proof that a rower or any other machine for that matter will aide in injury prevention or rehabilitation you shouldn’t have any issues Keep up the strong work on your channel! I’m glad I just found you as I have endless content 🤘

Ergatta has the setup that we like. Having to keep yourself accountable for your workouts to progress is amazing. We didn't want some coach just telling us to "keep it up". Having to hit our paces on the workout was much better to give us the workout we want. It's awesome to be able to see your progress over time on how Ergatta automatically adjusts your level.

There is a caveat: everybody eventually comes to the wall as results and metrics is concerned. If your main motivation is constant improvement, be prepared, that around 7 min / 2000 metres on C2 any further progress is insanely difficult (as for an amateur). Everyone has it's wall, even Olympic athletes. So the motivation will drop. It is MUCH easier to improve from 7:20 to 7:00 / 2k than from 7:00 to 6:40, not mentioning the hell of trying to catch 6:30 from 6:40. If you can row 6:40/2k you are probably a competitive university athlete. If you can row below 6:20 2k - you are a serious Olympic candidate. I train mostly for health and for distance, but of course, I do trainings of different intensities, from long, Maffetone rows to shorter intense HIIT workouts.

I have over 8 million meters on my Concept 2 model D. It is as good now as it was when I bought 10 years ago. I clean it and oil the chain periodically. My favorite rowing meme is "Rowing doesn't have to be fun to be fun!" I like the time on my rower to think and don't need games or videos. But everybody is different so your objective reviews are very appreciated.

I bought a Xebex 2.0 Rower about a year ago. I was asleep last year and wanted a rower for working out last winter. However, rowers were going for crazy amounts of money last year and were limited in availability when I started looking. I got my Xebex delivered to my house for about $900. At the time, Concept 2 rowers were going for about twice that and had several week wait. I am very happy with my rower.

Coffee, water, green tea…I got a deal on a Waterrower just so I can now upgrade with the Ergatta monitor purchase. I’m rather sensitive to loud noises and the Concept2 was just not a workable solution for me. I totally understand the foot plate issue with Waterrower/Ergatta but as a beginner and for the money investment I had to start, I’m happy with my decision. Thanks for a great video!

Hey man, found this video looking for the best rower for my needs and I appreciate your niche knowledge and insight. If I may make a couple recommendations for this video or next year’s, I’d suggest you consider the following: - Adding timestamps may work against total view time on your video but I’d love to be able to quickly hear your take on each tower and find it easily. Introducing the list to set expectations might be great. - Adding the links from your description as clickable links on the video to reduce friction. - on that same note, also redirect people to a proper form video, I know I’d want to go there next. This video helped me pick which rower I’ll be buying for my home gym and was a lot better than any other source I’ve found online. I hope other people needing a rower find this video 😁 thanks for the help.

Another great video, Austin… thanks for putting all of this good info together! I personally already own a Concept 2 Model D and I love it… I use to row at the local gym until Covid hit, and then purchased my Model D to continue my rower workouts at home. Different strokes for different folks and all, but I’m personally not a fan of subscription-based rowers. First, I don’t like the fact that there is an additional monthly cost (which could go up at any time) to deal with, beyond the already expensive cost for some of these rowers. I also don’t like that some of these sub-based rowers have limited functionality if you try to operate them without purchasing the subscription- and that is a deal-breaker for me. I did find your information on the Aviron very interesting… if I were to buy a sub-based rower, I suppose this might (might) be the one. Again, a lot of good info in this video… thank you!

I watched this video yesterday and you were very negative towards the Echelon rower without even sitting on one. My Echelon was delivered yesterday afternoon while I was at work. I assembled it late last night after I arrived home from work and my wife and I both tried it out. We love it! Very quiet and smooth and the footstraps are large velcro straps that are very easy to use. I hate the footstraps on the Matrix rower at the company gym because the buckles are awkward and clumsy to manipulate. You mentioned the shorter track compared to the Concept but I'm 6 ft so I can't address your concerns. We love the machine so far and the best part is that my 60- plus yr old wife is excited about using this machine. I've seen a few comparison videos on this rower and others. This one was less than half of the cost of Hydrow or Matrix and the videos are good enough to keep us novices in the game. I urge you to get one of these machines to review. Your height might rule it out but I'm super satisfied. .....and yes we are furnishing the apple pad but we can play what we want while rowing. I've learned a lot about form from you and "Dark Horse". Keep up the good work sir!

I was thinking the same thing and was going to comment until I saw this comment.. Austin love your videos, good work, but I feel the same as this commenter.. After ending up with an Echelon Spin Bike I ended up liking the Echelon platform and thus ended up buying an Echelon rower over the others to be on that platform. There is an extreme lack of Echelon Rower reviews/videos. It would be very helpful if you could actually try the Echelon and do a fair unbiased review on it.. Keep in mind some, like myself, get particular exercise equipment largely because of the fitness platform being used. Otherwise though, Austin I appreciate your videos and my Uncle has the Concept 2 and has been a fan of your videos too. 👍🏼

I just bought a WaterRower in Natural Ash, it's a fantastic rower for me any my gf in our apartment. Simply put the Concept 2 would be too loud here. The noise is beautiful (my cats even really love it when I row, I'm serious!), it's solid and smooth rowing and it looks phenomenal in our space. I plan on using it nearly every day and I'm already feeling good results. I totally get your criticisms, in fact I considered them before I bought it, but it probably helps that I'm 5'10 to fit in it more easily. I think it was a great compromise between a great American-made rower for casual people looking for an effective workout, vs. getting a cheap one off of Amazon that has even more sub-par monitor capabilities. But who knows, maybe I'll get a different model before I know it!

I have a sunny phantom (water) rower, which I have been using for about 3 months. I've been continuously learning about rowing over this time. your videos have been an excellent resource for my improvement. One thing I have noticed is the while rowing to yours and other's videos. I can't get my 500 meter split anywhere near the 2 or even 3 minute nark. I recently discovered the monitor on my machine only calculates meters rowed as a fixed distance per stroke. This means that no matter how much effort I put into each stroke, my distance is fixed. Machines like the concept 2 and other more expensive units use "perpetual motion" for meters per stroke which allows for more meters per stroke for more effort. I like the rower, as it gives me a great workout, but it's disconcerting to see my monitor read 5 or 6 minute split when the person on the video is doing 1.5 or so. Of course, the video person is also doing 2000 plus meters while I'm only showing about 750. I don't expect to match world records, but it would be nice to about least be at maybe 2 to 3 min splits instead of 5 or 6 while the video is at 1.5 :-) If I had known this when considering my purchase. I would have made a different (more expensive) purchase. Could you look into this and maybe do a video on it so people, can know this information before buying. I think this is very important information for anyone who is really wanting to use their rower in a serious manner, and should be advertised. Thanks for doing your videos. They are helpful and useful. Please keep doing your great work. If you want to converse about this, my email address is bohlerengineering@yahoo.com.

I’m going crazy trying to make a decision on a rower to purchase. Do I want to spend $2K on something? Not really but I would if the value exceeded my expectations. $2K… that’s 4 high-end escorts or 10 BBW escorts. Lol. Honestly, I was late to the MacBook party because I never wanted to pay Apple’s high price tag. However, I finally did in 2013 and still use the same one. Definitely my best purchase ever. I live in a residential apartment building have neighbors on every side. The concept was in my cart until I heard your comment on the sound, which the dark horse guy said too. I think it’s between the Sunny you reviewed as a best option in the $600 range and the Aviron. I’m a 40 year old depressed guy who is out of shape, 5’10, and 225 lbs. I need to take action in 2022 and really need guidance because I’m extremely indecisive. What are your thoughts?
@kenfox7277
@kenfox7277 2 года назад
Austin, thank you for all of the quality content you have produced! A couple of points; I wouldn't extrapolate the comfort you have with the various machines to the general public, few of whom are going to share your size and shape. For example, the comments that you and that "dark horse guy" have made about foot separation on the WaterRowers probably has little relevance to people who are not tall. I think that everyone is going to bring their own personal size and shape, not to mention age, flexibility, fitness level, etc. etc. etc. to the mix and there will be a wide range of reactions to every decent rowing machine out there based upon how a given person's body interacts with a given machine's design parameters. Most people could probably adapt their size, shape, rowing form, etc. to most any of the better machines, although a given one may be more comfortable for them than the others and this is probably not predictable without actually using the machines a few times. Another point that I would make is that if someone is really going to use any of these machines for months and years, a couple or three hundred dollars in cost is going to fade into irrelevancy over time and anyone who makes a long term commitment to this sort of exercise would be making a mistake to buy one machine over another on the basis of one costing some relatively small amount more or less. The more important question would be whether you like the product enough to actually want to have it in your dwelling as opposed to moving it down into the basement or selling it on Craig's List because it didn't in the end represent something you either enjoyed looking at or using or having in your living room. Better to buy what appeals to you and to use that as a guide to what you might actually end up using longer term.
@BGing_Foodie
@BGing_Foodie 2 года назад
I believe the footplate spacing issue is more of a concern for wider people in general, not just tall people. A concrete example of this is doing a high jump with feet shoulder width apart vs together. It is more comfortable and mechanically advantaged to have the feet farther apart for jumping, which is the same motion as rowing but flipped 90 degrees. He's gone into more detail in his other videos about another con about the WaterRower footplates: the vertical distance between footplate and seat. They are much closer together on the WaterRower than Concept2 and most other machines. This makes it harder/physically impossible to properly lean forward at the catch for people with larger midsections and less flexibility. Given that a large portion of his audience is people starting a fitness journey, this is a very important point for him to mention. Having yet another roadblock for people trying to improve their lives can be the difference between sticking with rowing, and the machine gathering dust.

Hello Austin. Thanks for all the great information. I ultimately went with the Aviron Tough Series Rower for my final choice. I was completely sold on the gaming concept and community. After waiting weeks for its delivery, my Rower was delivered last Friday. I worked to assemble it on the following day and ran into some issues when I discovered a key component was damaged. After calling Aviron, they advised me that they'd send me over replacement monitor/power cables with DIY install instructions. So I had to wait until this past Tuesday to even think about activation and usage of this machine. I am not very mechanicals or technicalities inclined. But I gave it the old college try....The install instructions did not match the actual configuration of the machine. My customer experience has been subpar for purchasing a 2K plus dollar machine...I am leaning towards returning it now. Any advice you can provide so that I can let the right folks know about my crappy experience......

It is a little surprising that Waterrower hasn’t updated their monitor, but to dismiss it entirely is crazy to me. He shoots down the biomechanics of it, yet pretty much anyone would tell you the position on the Waterrower is closer to an actual boat than the Concept2. I certainly don’t have washboard abs and have no issue maintaining form on it. Also, it would be impossible for Waterrower to not bump up their prices after what has happened to lumber prices during COVID. I’m actually shocked it hasn’t gone up more. That’s just the bad luck of them using wood instead of plastic and metal like Concept2. Having said that, the Concept2 is amazing if you don’t have an issue with the noise of it. I think both are incredible.

I also bought the Nordic Track (for $CAD 400 = $USD 325 without the video screen) and it was OK for my wife but in the end she wanted a Concept 2 as well. My son also bought the Nordic Track and wore out the belt in a couple of years. With a bike crank and freewheel puller, you can replace the strap with generic packing web strap. I think the extreme "downgrade" of Waterrower just because of its monitor might miss several opportunities for some buyers. Where other brands have something newer and more fancy, they are often highly proprietary and inflexible. "Old" does not mean "bad", necessarily. It provides a fair amount of information, and there are many ways to upgrade or customize a Waterrower, which is not the case with other brands. They began at the bottom of my list, but I ended up buying one, based on my own "buy it for life" priorities. There is a monorail model (A1) for those concerned about ergonomics (it also retails for less than the Concept 2), and massive options for changing and upgrading the monitors. A person can start with a Waterrower and end up with an Ergatta or Cityrow Classic, or something in between. Sometimes a choice to keep "old" technology is a wise decision based on stability/flexibility/compatibility. All these slicker, sexier options have downsides in lack of flexibility and risk that a large purchase will not be useful long-term, is not easily serviced by the owner, or is not easily resold secondhand because it is too specific.

Yep. Love love love the waterrower. If I were training for events, would probably choose a concept because it allows for resistance adjustment. But the waterrower is FUN and so beautiful. You can add the Eregatta platform for more gamification and training support.

Hey Austin, getting acquainted with rowing and finding this type of video very useful, thanks. 6ft8in... I'm sure you've had different challenges to contend with! Coffee over Tea, but all 3 in the end. There are so many options and by default a lot of potential to buy the wrong equipment. Amazon makes that easy. Price is certainly not the be all and end all. The Concept2 where I'm located is $1500 (not $900) which is significantly more than a lot of other machines out there but judging by comments, they don't call it the gold standard for nothing. I'm just concerned that unless you plan to be an athlete, it might be overkill? As rowing is pushed as a whole body workout without having to become professional is a very powerful motivator (in my circumstance). I've done the gym for years but when the pandemic hit and lockdowns became the norm, lack of exercise and aging do not make for good results. I tend to go for quality and longevity over price... as you get what you pay for. Not looking to be an Olympian but rather to repair damage, toning up and regain fitness where shedding a few pounds would be a welcome bonus... is rowing the best bet/recommendation, given that you mention it should be combined with other in a fitness routine... meaning that if one was to pick a main activity due to lack of time, would you recommend rowing above all other exercise?

c2 has been the same price for over 10 years, which is amazing. 900 bucks for the gold-standard rower is a bargain, and far more accessible for most people than a top of the line treadmill or similar.

@@carriegreenleaf9612 it's the gold standard, what is used by universities, rowing clubs. It is not a 'hydrow' (akin to the Peloton of rowing). But it is definitely considered a high end rower.

Great video! Very helpful. I'd love an Aviron but it's too pricey and I don't want to be tied to those subscriptions. The Concept 2 is very appealing but don't want something so loud. Is there a rower that performs like the Concept 2, in a similar price range, that is quieter?

Got classic waterrower added up smartrow module which offers C2 like merics accuracy. S4 monitor remain switched off most of the time... If I would be buying again I would pick waterrower A1 (monorail) and smartrow. Note on ergonomics. It's much better with high pad attached to the seat.

Just received my Concept 2 today. After using it (easy to put together), my first thought was “This isn’t loud…!” From the reviews I’ve read, I expected a lawn mower, race car engine. It’s not nearly as loud as I expected. By that I mean, I don’t think it’s loud at all. Smooth action, feels sturdy. 30 min and I like the product.
@richardmather1906

Agree. They over do the noise comments on the C2, IMO.
@monkeyb1820
@monkeyb1820 Год назад
it's not unbearable, but I found I'd have to blast a tv pretty loud to overcome the noise from the c2. I was rowing around 2:05-2:10 per 500m, so if you're around that pace it should be kind of loud--but not awful. And airbuds didn't exist when I was using it moreso, so using those would help.

Thank you, Austin! (to answer your question) I like both coffee and tea, but I try to stay away from caffeine, so mostly drink herbal tea. Re: rowers, I have been using a Circuit Fitness rower (I know, you don't like it) since March 2020 without any issues. It has even been disassembled a few times to take across the country with me. When it dies on me, I will likely go with a Concept 2. I have been using your RU-vid rowing videos as well as Dark Horse and a few others. Kudos to you for putting out all of these great videos.

I am mostly tea person, with an occasional mug of coffee. But as it goes about rowing - C2. Model D bought almost 2 years ago. It has everything it needs to have and hasn't anything it does not need. It saves my life, it returned me to a decent shape and health. It is really the best bang for buck. I do not need any subscription to row and noise is not an issue for me. And it's price is really decent for this quality and service support. If you seriously want to train rowing and it is your basic sport - only C2. Period.

Maybe you're not aware, but it's possible to purchase an Ergatta extension arm & screen on WaterRower, with wood types matching the rower. The companies cooperate. Ergatta'a cherry is quite limiting, and will look stupid in a room full of furniture from e.g. oak.

ProForm is giving the R10 for free with a 3-year iFit subscription. Since I have an iFit ready Norditrack treadmill, getting the free R10 with the iFit subscription (which I can use on both machines) was a no-brainer. I never intend to be a "pro" rower, so even though the C2 would be a better machine than the R10, I just couldn't pass up the offer, especially if I was going to pay for iFIt anyway.

Good morning Austin! I am new to rowing and have enjoyed watching your reviews and other videos to help educate me. I was wondering if you've ever used the LIT Method Rower? It's appealing to me because it's a water rower and quieter than the concept2. Noise factor. Maybe an issue at my house. There's very little information out there as far as reviews on the LIT Method Rower. I'm not sure why. It's been around for several years now. I guess my concerns are of course if it's worth it, if tall people can use it easily, if it has a decent display with good metrics, of course if it's a quality product, and if you can still access the metrics without a membership. Not really interested in paying a monthly fee. Anyway, if you have an opinion on this, I would love to hear about it. Better yet, if you could do a video on it that would be awesome! Or if you have feedback on why they're so little information out there about it, I could be helpful too. Thank you so much,!
