1. The kind of terminal velocity of the order of Mach 24 in descent trajectory that creates plasma shield is associated with ICBM/SLBM or even IRBM type of longer range ballistic missiles that ascend to high altitude (altitude of of350+ to ~1000km or even higher) and hence attains that kind of terminal velocity during descent post re-entry. Theater range ballistic missiles (range of 60~150 km) which may carry counter-force tactical nuclear warheads in case of adversaries like Pakistan attain terminal velocity of mach 2~5. The longer range (~350 km) interceptor missile of S400 system climbs to an altitude of ~200km while fixed wing aircrafts fly at a maximum altitude of 18~25km and you do not need a surface to air missile of ~200 km altitude capability to shoot down a fixed wing aircraft, be it fighter jet, bomber, transport aircraft or drone. The altitude capability alone of longer range missile of S400 system tells you that it can intercept Theater ballistic missiles. S400 is not a capable ballistic missile air defense system as it can not intercept most other kinds of ballistic missiles but it is a versatile air defense system in that it can intercept various kinds of aircraft at long ranges and has limited capability against ballistic missile in that it is an economical choice for air defense against incoming Theater range ballistic missiles (cost of tactical nuclear warhead that limits their use in ballistic missiles further enhances the opportunity cost and financial viability of S400). 2. Both THAAD and Arrow2/Arrow3 are dedicated and expensive ballistic missile defense systems meant for interception of long range ballistic missiles and because of their prohibitive cost, India can not afford to field such systems in numbers required against China and Pakistan. India's local BMD system has limited capabilities against only medium range ballistic missiles. All ABM/BMD systems are tested with tweaked threat scenario that is nowhere close to the threat of incoming barrage of ballistic missiles in a real world actual war scenario. Such systems create false sense of complacency and security. It is rather prudent to maintain slightly dispersed and highly mobile mechanised armor in the land forces and ramp up C4ISR, early warning and realtime firing trajectory detection capabilities along with an economical anti Theater ballistic missile air defense solution like S400 that will minimize damage on your side. Counter-value nuclear strike against Indian cities is highly unlikely as India itself possesses nuclear deterrent to retaliate in kind; even possibility of use of tactical nukes is low. Still, in order to tread with extra caution, India should evince interest in acquiring 3 Thaad/Arrow systems for Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore-Chennai region with promise that these systems would be kept away from S400 systems and would be manned and maintained by dedicated teams not associated with S400. 3. Armenian S300 systems acquired in 1980s were intercepted with Israeli drones and loitering munitions that had superior EW capabilities against guarding obsolete point defense systems like OSA which had no dedicated serious EW components unlike India which has powerful mobile integrated EW systems like Himshakti and Samyukta that are updated keeping with air defense threat environment every few years. So you should not compare apples with oranges. Also it was Israeli drones that inflicted heavy damage with their EW capabilities; Turkish drones of Azerbaijan destroyed some antenna elements of Armenian S300 after drones and loitering munitions acquired from Israel destroyed the radar and the battery of Armenian s300. 4. Air defense missile systems are layered with common interface facility at the air defense command, they are integrated or interoperable within the system, like one battery with other battery of the same system but not with other air defense missile systems. There is a sharp demarcation between interface facility and direct hardware and software integration. Azerbaijan also has S300 (PMU2) variant acquired in early 2010s along with Israeli Barak 8 SAM that was acquired in 2016. How did Azerbaijan manage to protect their own S300 systems against Armenian strike? Were Azerbaijan's Russian S300 PMU2 "integrated" with Israeli Barak8 SAMs or with American systems to "work properly" in ways India can not or is it just that Armenia lacked strategy and EW component in both its offensive strike and defensive posture capabilities and that S300PMU2 acquired by Azerbaijan is more sophisticated than the S300 systems acquired by Armenia in 1980s? 5. The blue on blue fire by Spyder on IAF Mi17 helicopter on 27th Feb, 2019 is being blown out of proportions with ludircously poor assumptions and presumptions without any proper context. The helicopter crew kept its IFF blinkers turned off for attaining radio silence in view of possibility of presence of enemy fighters and activity of enemy air defense as it was on a low altitude patrol and rescue mission. That mission failed as the helicopter failed to penetrate enemy air space as Pakistan had already amassed its land forces around the air pocket it chose to launch offensive against India and the man to be rescued was already picked up by the enemy. While returning the helicopter crew forgot to turn on their IFF transponders; the Spyder AD crew panicked having not received friend identification signals, (as Pakistan army also operates MI 17 helicopters and radar reflections off the airframe would be similar) and shot down the chopper with infrared seeker equipped mach 5 capable Python missile of Spyder over Bugdam at very short ranges of just about 10 km to which the helicopter had no defense or reaction time to resoond to or ability to jam as Python does not have a radar seeker- it was two counts of human error that led to the blue on blue firing. Such blue on blue firings have occurred with NATO/ISAF forces in Afghanistan as well. Had there been issues like IAF Spyder locking onto IAF MI 17 despite the latter sending friendly signals, such an issue would be found out during training and war gaming and would be flagged during testing before acquisition. There are issues with absence of SDR or two way data link and MAWS on board Indian fighter jets already known from beforehand and confirmed by the air combat on that day and those issues cropping out of cost saving measures taken in previous ASQR are being fixed by upgrading and installing such systems. 6. Let us assume that Spyder is being used as point air defense system guarding S400. Let us now consider Abhijit's presumption for arguments sake that since Spyder is not integrated with S400, it may shoot down a S400 missile fired from Indian side instead of intercepting incoming threats fired by the enemy toward Indian S400 battery located on ground. Now tell me how come a mach 5 capable Python missile can effectively tail-chase a mach 15+ capable (and with similar far higher initial velocity) S400 missile flying not toward the Spyder battery but flying away from it towards the enemy aircraft. If such things are possible, why didn't Barak8 in service with Azerbaijan try to intercept the S300PMU2 missile fired by Azerbaijan to destroy a Su-25 jet in service with Armenia? 7. How believable is it that IAF would buy five regiments worth USD 5.5 billion (and not one or two regiments), of S400 systems only to test its efficacy and limitations against rafales acquired by India to ascertain the threat posed by Chinese S400 systems to Indian air assault? Wargaming and evaluation of S400 surely must be one of many technical reasons to buy S400 but is it primary reason that justifies the acquisition in such large numbers? Pentagon people are not dumb, nor are their political establishment to suck up to whatever technical reasons that might be proffered by the Pentagon to their political masters, they both know that such reasons are facades cooked up by them for providing legroom and getting India through the barrier- when they are willing to embrace such facades, there should not be any inhibition in india's strategic discourse regarding real capabilities of S400 so long as the stance of not harming American interests in the region is maintained. It is another thing that S400 does not require integration with American and Israeli systems to "work properly" but if Americans are sure that Indians are incapable of "integrating" S400 with American and Israeli systems, they should not pretend to be worried about any imaginary security threat arising of such imaginary "integration" efforts. 8. Let us assume that S400 and Spyder systems are "integrated". What good would it serve to project realtime radar situation acquired at some 600 km by the OTH radar of S400 onto a computer screen at an "integrated" command vehicle of Spyder on ground when the Spyder has nothing to fire at or look out to such ranges and its dedicated FCR will anyway only fire after its dedicated detection radar transfers threats to the FCR to be engaged? Interface is high fidelity secure real time communication input being projected on different monitors at isolated kiosks at the air defense command room for the human operators to warn both standalone systems to be alert, "he has signals on his screen at such ranges, you stay alert and keep looking out for threat in that direction". Not all radars are turned on all the time, there may be maintenance or cooling periods. In eventualities like this, such warning from interface wakes up the sleeping radar of the standalone system which is integrated with its own components. 9. Source codes required for say integration of missile with platforms or the Fire Control Radar is not shared by the OEM with the end-user. But the end-user (in this case IAF) gets to choose common IFF mode for all its platforms for any given operation regardless of their origin.
See the Russian's have a different Anti ballistic defense system....it is called A-135...the A-135 is capable of intercepting ICBM's and is established in crucial economic zones like Moscow and St Petersburg...

Very good points by abhijeet. Abhijit is usually over-critical of indian tech capabilities but he is pretty much right on s-400 deal. That missile can prove very good in wartime in taking down aircrafts but little bit of calculations can tell you that it's stupidly tough to take out a ballistic missile with it. Still it's a good deal given it's great wartime potential. And he is 100% right on stupidity& ego of indian babus in general(there r exceptions of course). Also I would like you to cover below topic someday......I personally think GOI shall do this.. Indian gov shall give contracts to make cheaper low-to--mid quality drones to pvt indian companies. Indian tech companies are perfectly capable to mass produce something like that. Such mass-produced cheap weapons can heavily harass even sophisticated enemies and give an attrition edge(something india is good at). They can also be used in minor insurgencies(in such situations you wont be using things like missiles).

We need someone who can tell the pros & reasoning behind buying the system & not just knowing the cons & bashing the decision. I would love to hear what would be his strategy with the resources available at hand? Can we go purely US based weapon ignoring Russia entirely? Can we have entirely Russian based systems ? We need more practical person from defense to answer the technicalities. Regarding Indian defense on Endospheric & exospheric that he mentioned - I believe we would be firing only one of them rather than both of them like he mentioned (based on my common sense - although i could be entirely wrong). Regarding interoperability - if we have our own indigenous system then we can have one integrated system. Complete dependence to any side could be risky hence our dependence on multiple countries although we do compromise on system efficiency. It would be nice to hear from some defense personnel with practical experience.

I don't think ballistic missile s are difficult to track. According to facts they are the first missile's which can be detected easily. It takes time to enter earth orbit and can be shot in space itself.
S-400 is way above Patriot, Thaad or Arrow. It is also much more cheap in price. S-400 placed in an area will make a no fly zone for 400 kms for 360 degrees rotation. Btw, don't think Armenian S-300 was down by a drone, mainly because it was not even in the area where battle was taking place.

I have some querries for AIM that why can't Russian & Western systems be integrated if Western missiles can be integrated with Russian fighter jets or vice-versa. Python & Derby AAMs on Su-30MKI; LCA can fire R-73, R-77, Derby, Python, ASRAAM. Although he gave a close analogy of Android, Windows & Apple trying to sync, but he forgot that the limited sync b/w them is possible because they all use something called "device drivers" to communicate over same technology of TCP/UDP, IP, Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooh, etc. There is no need to disclose core OS code, that's why device-drivers are made which link higher level internal specific protocols talk to lower level external generic protocols to interface with outside world. You can see the lower levels of protocol stack of any OS. You can play videos from Windows laptop or iphone on Android TV, for example. What if Wipro/Infosys/TCS/CDAC/IIT/etc build an indegenous OS to end dependency on Windows, Linux, iOS, etc but also would like to limitedly "communicate" (not exactly integrate) with those OSs?? In future we will see "Aatmnirbhar Bharat" with our own OS, DB, chips, servers, network, etc. At UN there are incompatible countries sitting F2F but they have to follow common protocols of behavioral conduct. This means DRDO has to develop a "command S/w" acting like boss or parent, which absorbs data by all radars (Western or Russian or indegenous), builds a single FUSED picture of battlespace & then commands actions of missile firing. Then the Spider missile will be under control of this central "command S/w" not to fire on S-400 missile accidentally. If our ISRO can develop successful SLVs then i'm sure DRDO, HAL, NAL, etc can do the needful but question is when.

We don't understand why the Integrated Air Defence command has been considered into this crucial discussion, that's the whole point, if a system that cannot directly communicate with another (by principle, it does not have to), because the IADS will have the complete air picture, and they are the ones that will be guiding it. Until the IADS is taken out, there is no reason for S-400 or other systems to function independently themselves. AIM clearly not looking into the full picture here. If Spyder cannot talk to S-400, it will relay it back to IADS, and the IADS will relay it all in real time to the S-400 units. This is actually a brief and not a technical aspect also, if you discuss deeply you will discover the fallacies in his arguments.
The algorithm "i will nt name it" is used in Ballistics , SAS&A is different. The RF of the material has the potency to engage. AIM is been fooling ppl bcz they don't know about Technology.
