There's been a debate recently, and it's time to set the record straight. My very handsome friend ‪@SeanieDew‬ has unfortunately been mislead by some higher power, and has come to have a disdain for cranberries. Nay I say! Rejoice in the beauty of the TRUE best fall crop!
(I asked Seanie for permission before I clapped back)

I made an oopsie in my calculations! I forgot to apply the level boost to the non-fertilizer affected caranberries, so more likely than not, the level requirements for pumpkins to outpace them are one or two levels higher!

This is up there with the argument over whether the fruit cave or mushroom cave is better. 😅
@samuraiinblack8364
@samuraiinblack8364 Год назад
I think that one is going to be geared more towards play style and what farm you're on. If it's your first time and/or you're not on the forest farm, getting mushroom cave to pump out life elixirs may make a lot of sense if you aren't going to pump out gold cheese. But if you are pumping out cheese, then fruit cave definitely. But if you're already on forest farm then fruit cave makes more sense.
@voyager1977.2
@voyager1977.2 Год назад
Obviously it's a mushroom cave, mushroom is a huge boost for your energy or money maker, the only thing suck is red mushroom which 2 of them will be donated to Community Center and the rest are accumulated for future recipes. Fruits on the other hand, are only helpful for Artisan bundles and even relying on 3 Apples for the Marnie's bundle really sucks too, it's better to buy Apple Sapling and plant it before Summer 25. The good thing about Apple and Pomegranate sapling is they are both in Fall season means you have a lot of preparation time to earn to buy in Pierre's, just remember to plant it before Summer 25.

I used to always choose mushroons, bit on my new save, I decided to do different and finally choose bats, guess what, BATS ARE TRASH, I cant understand WHY people defend it, like, sometimes it doesnt work so you get nothing and when get its 1 item, mushroons are guaranteed in every a few days and when get its 6, plus mushroons are very hard to find, the fruits are WAY easier to find or grow, and the tree ones wich are the ones people actually want there, well, as long as you grow your trees theres no use for the cave anymore, but the mushroon cave will keep giving you an item you cant grow by yourself or easily find, plus they are profitable and useful. So mushroon way better, and makes your farm complete having a bit of everything without needing to go out to farm them (in caves), different than bat one that literally just gives you what you already have on the farm. I dont see the point of people discussing this, the difference is obvious, whoever recomends bats is trolling new players very hard 😅
@libero2711_
@libero2711_ Год назад
not really, everyone knows fruit bat is better
@matthewgladback8905
@matthewgladback8905 Год назад
@@ruanulisses6650 Yeah, the ideal use case for fruit bats is to literally forget they exist for entire seasons, then go round up an entire cave full of stuff and hope it finishes some bundles for you. You know, like speedrunners do. And even then it's really unlikely to give you enough apples; community center runners plant an apple tree anyway. If you play at all like them, maybe you'll see some benefit. But the mushroom cave actually gives you stuff in quantity, even if it can be hard to use that stuff. I have Automate, so it's actually *even more* hands-off than the fruit cave, too. There's no way to "automate" forage, which is what the fruit cave essentially is.

Here's a rundown: For raw produce, cranberries are better than pumpkins until high farming levels, and you have to be giving the pumpkins fertilizer for them to be superior, which is expensive to buy and time consuming to craft. Assuming unlimited kegs, cranberries are flat out superior gold per day, especially since wine can be aged and juice can't. However, Pumpkins do give higher gold productivity on an individual keg basis, and therefore may be the better option while you're still building up your kegs and before you have access to casks. Yet again however, it must be remembered that these are fall crops, so you have all of winter and early spring to process your cranberry harvest before it starts interfering with spring crop processing, swinging the math back in favor of cranberries, assuming you are willing to wait longer for the money.

cranberries are worse for processing, for year one on my casual playthroughs i go for 1000 crops on my farm per harvest during fall, so 2000 pumpkins if i’m too lazy for fertilizer. 2000*1008 is 2,016,000 gold from pumpkins. for cranberries, it’s 1000 crops for 5 harvests, so 5000 crops. however, each cranberry guarantees 2 per crop, and on average you get .11 cranberries on top of those 2. 5000*2.22 is 11,100 cranberries. you’d make 3,496,500 gold from those cranberries. significantly more, but it took me till the end of winter to process all 2000 pumpkins on my most recent farm. i did end up with more kegs at the end of winter, being 4 sheds full, so if i had 4 sheds full of kegs from the moment i began processing my cranberries, it would be over 5 seasons to process them all. that’s not worth it, and i wouldn’t have 4 sheds full of cranberries by the first cranberry harvest. pumpkins>cranberries

Also, income from Cranberries is more *CONSISTENT* as you get several harvests per month instead of only _two_ harvests of pumpkins. A good steady cash flow will always beat a lump sum that you have to wait half a month for. This is why getting a coop off the ground during the first spring will do more for you than devoting your entirety of spring trying to specialize in growing crops, because by summer you could be pulling in daily passive income of a couple thousand which translates into 50k+ per month until you finish out your coop (then it's upwards of 250-300k of passive income).

I usually sell the cranberries that are gold/silver/iridum quality and turn basic quality into wine for aging. Cuts down on the pure stock but still enough to keep you busy during winter.

Someone made a good point of both being fall crops, meaning you’d then have all of winter to process before you get your spring crops. Other than community center bundles I think cranberries are the way to go first year, but the following ones I’d do pumpkins for the +2 defense +2 luck food that’s only a pumpkin and milk to make since by year two you’re usually just printing money. Even as a newer player.

That's a good thing because in winter you can't plant anything (except winter seeds). And also because you can make a lot of jam that you can sell (gaining a lot of money in the long run).

I recommend to put both cranberries and pumpkins into preserves jars instead of kegs. It gives slightly less profit but frees up kegs for more important crops and makes preserves jars more worth bothering with. (Also want to mention how stupidly expensive preserves jars are. 8 coal is more expensive than one oak resin and it costs 50 wood instead of 30. This means that many times kegs are easier to make)

If you're planning to sell the raw produce, Cranberries have a slightly higher minimum profit and a slightly lower maximum profit per tile farmed, but a much higher profit per seed packet bought. If you're planning on processing the crops, cranberries have much higher average profit both per tile farmed and per seed bought, but this assumes unlimited processing ability, eg infinite kegs. Assuming a limited number of kegs, pumpkins make FAR more money per unit of time spent processing.

The thing on stardew valley I love: it depends everytime in the first years on how you play. I had around 800 crops in fall 1. But definitely not as much as I need to juice every cranberry, but I had a high farm level, bonus level from food and a lot of sap for free fertilizer. I only got silver and gold. In this constellation I earned more money with pumpkin and I had more time for fishing and mining.

For me, I have limited machinery, and cranberries alone give too much crop to process, especially since I’m still processing hops, so it’s better to use some crop space for pumpkins because they can quickly be processed in the otherwise mostly unused preserve jars for the rest of the year, and the excessive amount of cranberries I have will fuel the kegs (after the hops run out of course) until summer, when I’ll throw extras in the seed maker and store some to make cranberry sauce or other purposes. Then I’ll fill the kegs up with my massive new supply of hops because they net the most per day in the kegs, and also the starfruit between the hops, so that they get casked and net me big money. Of course, once I have a greenhouse full of ancient fruit, I won’t put cranberries in kegs anymore since once I run out of hops, I’ll put in all my ancient fruit. Then, it’s enough pumpkin for the preserve jar to last a year, some extra pumpkin for pumpkin soup, and the rest are all cranberries to be sold raw or for culinary or other purposes.

I always just use speed-grow, because more harvests means more money, and if you have tiller then using good speed-grow usually gives you an extra 2-6 harvests depending on what your growing, and crops that keep can be multi-harvested usually get the best affect since you have them grow faster.
@nifegun
@nifegun 10 месяцев назад
Allow me to get way too nerdy on this. Gold per day is not as useful as you may think. GPD is only worth calculating if youll be running it in a greenhouse or ginger island and theres better options for that anyway so really we're talking about making money on your first fall season. Also when doing a side by side all that matters is base values since keging or preserving just scales the values anyway, (slight exception for very low value items). This means we need to check pumpkinSalePrice: 320 vs cranSalePrice: 75 * 2 (you get 2 at harvest). As well as how many harvests you get of each pumpkins 2, crans 5. Then subtract seed cost. So your gold per season for one tile dedicated to each crop is as follows. Pumpkins: 2(320 - 100) = 440 Cran: 5(75*2) - 240 = 510 So over the whole season each tile dedicated to cranberries got you 90 more dold than a tile dedicated to pumpkin. Also Large pumpkins can happen, but you also get some bonus cranberries, large pumpkins could bring it back in pumpkins favour if you got crazy lucky, but it's not likely.

Only a noob sells crops raw, you gotta process everything if you’re trying to maximize profits. The problem with processing cranberries is that you need to cycle through like 5 times before you start to outsell 1 process of pumpkins. And idk about you but I don’t have nearly enough kegs /preserve jars to handle that many cycles by fall year 1. By the time I get my first harvest of starfruit from the greenhouse/ ginger island farm which is usually around early to mid winter depending on certain luck factors, I’m usually just then getting around the end of processing my pumpkins from fall. And from then on the only things going into my process machines are starfruit and ancient fruit. TLDR is its impractical to have enough resources to process cranberries over pumpkins even if it is hypothetically more money.
@velvetbutterfly
@velvetbutterfly 4 месяца назад
There is actually a bit of a distinction. When you have limited machines, it is better to put all pumpkins into kegs than it is to throw some cranberries in kegs and have to throw most in the bin unprocessed. Since pumpkins produce less units it's easier to process them all

I like to sell my gold quality pumpkins, and pickle the rest. If I tried this strategy with cranberries, I wouldn't have enough time through winter to age all of them. By the time I get to year 2, I try to already be farming star fruit on ginger island, so the time it takes to age all of the cranberries wouldn't allow me to plant star fruit until later. For more casual players who don't plan to do most of their farming on ginger island by spring of year 2, I agree that cranberries are the best, but for me, pumpkins are the quickest way to get me ready for mass star fruit production as early as winter.

One more tip: dont process your cranberries, put them in your seed maker instead. One berry yields 1 to 3 cranberry seeds that sell for 60g each, averaging a 120g per berry instead of 75 if you sell it directly.
