My straight hits harder than my hook lol

They both have their place. A straight punch is quicker and less likely to cause fatigue. A hook punch is slower yet stronger with the disadvantage it will tire you quicker. The entry angle for each is different. These are just model strikes. In the real world, you are better to know how to vary the strike for the situation and can contain aspects from both types.

I agree 100%. I learned how to throw straight punches in karate but honestly it took me a few months to feel comfortable landing them consistently in sparring matches especially when you only attend class for two hours per week and sparring is not the focus of the class. Hook punches on the other hand I could do without any training at all.

Hey, I got a scenario question for you. So lets say I am doing a 1-2. A left jab, then overhand right, and now my weight is on my left foot. Most people follow up with a left hook. Why not a left straight punch, kind of like a powered up jab? Would it have the same power? I ask this because in sparring my follow up left hook's range is too short a lot of times, so I feel a straight left from that position would be better, but don't know if it puts out about the same amount of force onto the opponent's face?

My philosophy is any punch that lands, and hurts your opponent is a very good punch, but if you're coming short with the left hook Widen the hook... You could watch some of Joe Frazier's Videos, Or Mike Tyson, they were usually shorter than their opponents so they through a wider left hook.

step forwards with your right foot and throw a left cross. Then you get the range and the power.
@gherrera74gh
@gherrera74gh 5 лет назад
This is what you need to do. When you initially throw your jab land your lead foot about 3 to 4 inches farther to the left (assuming your right handed). You'll be in position to blast a mean left hook. Other option would be to step 3 to 4 inches left after your right hand. Itll feel awkward at first but practice it. Remember position before submission in this case tko

How should your fist be oriented when using the hook in a street fight? Vertical (thumb up) or horizontal? I was once told to use vertical orientation to prevent breaking the weaker knuckles (ring and baby finger). What do you recommend? Thanks, love your vidoes.

Try each and see which one feels more natural. Notice that as your fist turns more horizontal your elbow naturally juts outward more (vector of energy transmission). Don't overdo it. The style I learned uses vertical fist for most punches, but when you are black belt they show you that when your body twists the vertical fist naturally becomes slanted (neither vertical nor horizontal). What they don't want are beginners trying to twist in a way that is unnatural and loses power efficiency. (it also helps to punch down a little bit (adds a little weight and pop at the end of non uppercuts)) but once again, not at the expense of losing transmission of energy from your core.

I personally prefer when a guy throws hooks at me because they're easier to anticipate. I can step back and he misses. I can throw a jab and it interrupt the hook or i can duck under it. If a hook does land it usually hits me near the forehead and I don't care. A straight jab or cross on the other hand, is usually a surprise and getting hit on the nose sucks lol

If you've got your body behind the punch either is effective. I think the angle of a hook landed to the jaw or temple might often be more effective in knocking an opponent out, but I don't think it delivers less force when you've trained and are twisting your damned hip and the energy is being delivered in a straight line of bone connecting from knuckle to shoulder back to your core with all your weight and side abdominal strength behind it.

Good point ! Hooks are indeed a more natural way of punching for untrained or under trained people. If they have very limited time to train self defence, learning hooks would be their best bet. Straight punches take more time to master. But I was curious to ask you this 1 question. What if someone trains enough and masters throwing 'hooks' as well as 'straight punches' ? What would be a better and more convenient weapon for a legitimately well trained pro boxer or a pro fighter ? Which kind of punches are more likely to beat the other in that scenario, 'hooks' or 'straight punches' ?
@ThePitOnlineDojo
@ThePitOnlineDojo 6 лет назад
That's a great question, thank you very much for it... In my personal opinion, and statistically professional sports fights from boxing, kickboxing,To MMA there are statistically more knockoutsVia hooks, write hooks, leftovers and overhand punches then there are stray punches. There isA very important place for straight punches and they can be very very effective, however, I would still rely more on hooks for power punches for many reasons. But if you do have the time to train would behoove youTo become proficient at stray punches and hooks.

He makes some good points, but he's not selling me on his straight-punches when he demonstrates them like that. All shoulders and arms. No hips or legs. Straight punches can be deadly, but they derive their power from the foundation. As Jack Dempsey succinctly stated, "a punch is body weight exploding into motion." We see that in the (admittedly poor quality) footage of the "Dempsey roll" against Jess Willard. Those were straight punches delivered from an outside or "oblique" angle. Similarly, watch the home training footage of 140 lb Bruce lee rocking that massive heavy back with straight punches...and note the rotation of his hips/center mass.

But wouldnt straights be faster than hooks?
@ThePitOnlineDojo
@ThePitOnlineDojo 6 лет назад
It could be, but to be honest most people cannot throw a straight punch effectively...So without a lot of training,It Is more natural to throw a hug so that's what I teach in my seminars.

It's not easy to throw or land a hook, so I would not attempt it without experience. Anyone with 30 mins of basic coaching should be able to land a good straight cross. Just my opinion.
@ThePitOnlineDojo
@ThePitOnlineDojo 5 лет назад
Also visually disagree with that, and if somebody was in your face and you didn't have time to put your hands up... You have to swing wherever they are, and that would mean a hug. Plus your shouldersAnd the anatomy and physiologyMake a hooks a much more natural punch to throw

level one. Hooks take more time and require you to be closer. level two. Because hooks take more time you are not as protected when you strike because your hands are further away from your body. Level three. Hooks are easier to see. It is harder to process something coming straight at you than something coming across. Level four. If we were to assume untrained fighters have the best fighting method. Then there would be no point training to fight. Training is designed to change your natural responses. And so basically if we both closed our eyes and you threw hooks and I threw straights I would land more effective shots. Before Either of us had to ever even address the other guys attacks. Straights at a basic level are a mechanical advantage. Now when somone learns to address punches, use footwork and cut good angles. They can counter straights with hooks. But that takes time and training.
