What's Better Than a Makaira 10K Spinner? A 20K Silly!

Okuma's 20000 Makaira Big Game Spinning Fishing Reel!
Last year i got my first Makaira Reel, the 10K. It's by far the strongest spinner i've ever owned. Well a few days ago i got a box from Okuma with my newest largest & strongest spinning reel i've ever owned! The Makaira 20K Spinning Reel! Larger body to a bigger spool. For my usage i prefer high cranking power with 100% waterproofing. Also a fair MSRP & a reliable reputation. I don't care about the higher weight due to the usage of forged Stainless Steel. I'm getting what i want & need without sacrificing the higher prices charged by other manufacturers.
Alan Hawk gives the Makaira his highest ratings & explains the good & bad points on his web site. Even though his report card on the Makaira fares way better than the other spinning reels he's reviewed it doesn't mean the other contenders are bad units. I have a lot of respect for Mr Hawk but i judge my reels by the attributes i'm looking for, shoreline usage mostly. Alan gives his recommendations from fishing off a boat. The 2 styles exert different stress loads on the reel. Also the species caught and the angles produced when landing them. There should be dual recommendations, one from shore & the other by boat. Especially for the highest epsilon of fishing products based upon the retail prices that companies are asking for.
In the future i hope all the industries will realize what myself & other hard core anglers recognize when truly testing a fishing reel. Recently with Covid hampering our lives we must also look at MSRP's. Shipping has already increased pricing & availability around the World on all products domestic & foreign. Suggested retail on items will affect the families of those consumers looking at their next acquisitions. Fishing companies such as the Big Three (Shimano, Daiwa & Okuma) they should be aware of the changing times. The first to follow suite will leave the other 2 behind.
Now getting back to my newest baby i'm going to spool line on this monster and already ordered a beefy rod to cast it with. For my fishing needs my choice was based off max drag & purchase cost with a good service record. So this means i sacrificed size & unit weight in exchange for what i wanted & needed. But the differences are so slight that it won't affect my game. This will be my newest & strongest plugging, trolling & surf combo yet. This reel was manufactured with the production number #46301 stamped on the bottom. This code tells me it was produced in Taiwan in 2021, 2nd week in July.

Okuma is long known to offer quality products similar to other name brands but without that high MSRP. TY.

I own a brand new 30 000. Figured I could add a extra 20 k spool since I will be using this reel to target sharks and big rays in South Africa. Good to know the 20 k spool will fit on my 30 k. Excited to catch monsters on this reel , especially the first one.

Not many 10K & 20K owners out there to make this comparison. I only know of a few dz here on Oahu. More from Maui. Commonplace off California & Australia. 10K's are the most popular & versatile. I'm in my early 60's using 2 1pc PCH rods for both my units. I'm handling them fine. I went field casting off a polo field last week with both rigs. 4hrs non stop. I can use a 8oz all day on my XH rod w/the 20K. On the H rod w/the 10K it was extremely easy to cast 5/6oz all day long. One of the workers there was watching me & came over asking to try both. He liked the 10K if plugging all day but said if he planned on dunking it was the 20K. I agree with him.

@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 2 года назад
Yes, dunking will not be an issue. On the East side of Oahu i plug & dunk using the Makaira 10000 & a PCH XH 1pc Rod. It's a heavier reel than the Stella as you already know. I still use my Mak10 rig & i'm in my early 60's with no issues. But you just need to prioritize what's more important to you. Having more max drag? Warranty & parts? Easy servicing? Resell value? The initial buying price (the biggest). History of problems & issues (so far provided by Alan Hawk's website). Also will you always be shoreline bound, or can you fish off a boat or yak? I'm all of these. I got 4 Stellas but for the high price i'd rather get a BNIB Makaira with full warranty for under $900. Don't want to make my family pay for my wants. I know many local Mak users from Oahu to Maui & Molokai. We all talk about getting a 20K after our 10K. All the Stella owners i know prefer the smaller lighter units & often sell off their larger units. There's something in the works that may soon change this,,,

@Scuba Chris Looking at a 20000 and doubling it for surf, as well as spinning. Question is what okuma rod would you suggest for surf fishing big game fish.
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris Год назад
Do you live in the USA? Different rods for different countries. For the US it's on a PCH Rod for plugging & surfcasting it's a Rockaway HD (can also go PCH).

@@abishaifernandez1983 Again depends on your target species. All around i like my 8ft PCH 1pc XXH Rod. HD 1pc solid rod! For distance on the reef i use my Rockaway 12ft HD Rod rated up to 16oz but i use less than 1/2 that.

Yes the 20000 & 30000 use the same body, but the 30000 have a wider rotor, so a 30000 spool won't fit a 20000 reel. The other way around, buying a 30000 & then getting a 20000 spool, would have been smarter as a 20000 spool can fit inside the rotor.
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris Год назад
Of all my units i tend to use my 10K the most with the braided line w/the mono top shot. I also have an all mono spool. Use whatever fits your style &/or needs. Years ago i dove off a rock 45min South of Phuket out of Rawai. Place was truly wild. Pelagics all over right up to the cliffs. You must have gorilla arms to be throwing the 30K all day. I tend to use my larger units trolling plugs off the back. But years ago i gave up using all my big stuff. I now prefer jigging from shore using 3k/4k spinners.
@Tight--LiNeZ
@Tight--LiNeZ Год назад
@@ScubaChris Okay cool, just trying to tell you that can't put a 30000 spool on a 20000 reel (like you said you want to do in the vid), only can do it the other way around. The 20000 rotor isn't wide enough to accept the 30000 spool width mate. Yes, the 30000 size Makaira & Stella don't cast that well, cos of the spool size & weight. They are more spinner replacements for big overhead game reels. 20000 casts great though, cos spool is narrower. I have the 10000 Makaira, 30000 Stella & 20000 2020 Saltiga & 7000h Dogfight.
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris Год назад
@@Tight--LiNeZ TY. I've been babying my units by using other monster spinners that are close in drag power but holds way more line than my Maks. I know, why get them then? I was offered to accept them so i couldn't say no. Even when i had my Stellas i never really used my new units, only my previously used units. I'm weird like that i guess. That's why i could never purchase a top notch expensive reel. I wouldn't want to damage it. I'd accept it to do a vid on it but after i spool line on it it's back in the box. That's why i need 2 of each. A working model & a "eye candy" piece. I don't care much for most of my reels, or rods. Only a handful. My Cedros. Makairas. Helios. Alijos. Those reels i hardly use. I do like my GSP Rods. Have a bunch of new ones. I only use 3 different sizes. I have BNIB duplicates just in case. Yeah, i'm weird.

Me too, but i started at 10K, then 20K. Now that i have the 20K there's no need for a 30K as this unit holds enough line and is already heavy w/that line.
@Tight--LiNeZ
@Tight--LiNeZ Год назад
It's not better, it's bigger. Makaira spins are probably the most heavy-duty reel ever built, but they are heavy because of that. So I use my 10000 for livebait & jigging. They are just too heavy to use for topwater work for any length of time. For that I use a 2020 Saltiga or Stella. Another awesome HD spinning reel is the USA Penn Torque 1 & Torque II.
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris Год назад
At the time these came out they were rated better in comparison to all the others. Before the Mak came out it was Stella that was rated#1. And yes, these are bigger in size & heavier in weight as well. Also recently Shimano has done away with their Platinum Plan so if you own a Stella your 48hr service plan may go the 2-month stretch as we hear there's a backlog now. Not sure why Shimano has done this. If you purchased your Mak brand new you can send it in for a free servicing within it's first year. I've since added extra spools & a metal power knob for my 10K. Now each has a braid & mono spool. I owned 7 Stellas before. The only viable advantage was the lighter weight of the smaller units for my lighter rigs. I prefer my beefier reels for my H rods. Why bother w/a light reel on a H or XH rod? I really hate that feeling of being imbalanced.
@Tight--LiNeZ
@Tight--LiNeZ Год назад
I'm not sure why you would put an imbalanced rod & reel combo together either. Not sure why you're saying that sorry.@@ScubaChris

I am not sure the 30K spool will fit on the 20K , the bail is most probably different. Scuba Chris can you confirm this with Okuma ? This shows the difference in size between the 20K and the 30K ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_rUCSzEyyCE.html at 0:21

I'm sure you're correct. I had spoken with Ronald last year on the spool sizing on if i could use another spool to increase yardage on my 10K Mak. Ron is in charge of parts dept. He said you couldn't, that's why many anglers order a 2nd spool. So i ordered an extra spool. One is for braid while the other is for mono. Also i'm pretty sure that bail arm might be an issue on the smaller size if you plan on "swapping" out.

Made in Taiwan?
@ScubaChris
@ScubaChris 2 года назад
Yes, from Taiwan. Some of the best microchips & other products are manufactured in Taiwan. I'm sure if it was made in the US that the MSRP would be higher. Okuma started in Taiwan as a milling company. In fact Okuma has been milling parts, and still is for other fishing companies before manufacturing its own.

@ScubaChris 2 года назад
@@eves08109 To be in a position to make comparisons you need to know what you're talking about. First you always miss-spell Makaira. And there'a a World of difference between China workmanship & Taiwanese. You do know that Okuma was first started in Taiwan, not in the USA. Correct? It's a Taiwanese based company with Worldwide affiliate companies. And for NASA's Space Shuttle the major componentry contract went to Taiwan because they're the best available (which is why China wants Taiwan). I keep allowing you to post even though you're facts & spelling aren't correct. And price-wise even Mr Hawk agrees that of the "Big 3" power spinners that the Makaira is the most price friendly. I have no problems posting others opinions but you can't even spell the name correctly on all your postings.

Whatever works for you Brian. Only YOU know your game. In bowling if you're right handed you slide on your left to create "balance". But my military friend's daughter is right handed but slides on her right. She doesn't look balanced at the line throwing right handed while sliding on your right leg. But she's used to it. Do whatever works for you.

Mr Hawk's reviews are the industries "go to" references right now. Alan bases his reviews fishing off his boat. Shoreline applications creates different conditions that puts strain on different parts of the reel not associated with "up & down" line retrievals. I owned boats all my life. The wear & tear i put on my units are completely different from shoreline applications. I put this information in my write-up. You can find Mr Hawk's reports on his site at- www.alanhawk.com/

I tend to disagree on the right handed to use left hand to crank... its like this European crap with bicycles and US... the have right handed brakes but in the US we use left hand which makes no sense since you want to brake with your strongest hand not the weaker one... same with reels, you don't use a wrench and crank it with your weak hand to tighten bolts you use your strong hand and you'll want to spin the reel work your strong hand not the weaker one especially if your fighting a big fish for a long time. That makes sense not the other way around... plus most all conventional reels are right handed with very few that offer proper left sided ones. So why not keep the power the same throughout your tackle setup.
