Video Description:
The Fung Bros were once a RU-vid powerhouse bringing millions of views per video a few years ago. Recently, the Fung Bros have shifted to a new RU-vid strategy where they make high-frequency, less edited podcast videos sometimes posting multiple times per day which bring in less views than their previously viral hits. While these videos bring in fewer views, they cover important Asian American issues and the Fung Bros are one of the only channels doing so (aside from ya boi lol).
This leads to the question, are the Fung Bros becoming irrelevant? Or are they more relevant than ever, standing at the forefront of the Asian diaspora?

Funny enough, I was super late to the party and didn't start watching much Fung Bros until after they had already made the shift to more podcast/ social commentary-type content. So I actually enjoy a lot of their current work for the most part Lol But I can definitely see how it can be seen as a major departure from the content they used to be known for.

I watch the fung bros as someone who identifies as part of the Asian American community but not the Chinese American one. I am more confused with your intent on bringing someone else’s platform down when they are just staying true to themselves. If they have a neutral opinion on popular topics you are not forced to watch it. In this generation, the heavier the view (more controversial, more opinionated) the more likely you are to be cancelled. Sure you’ll gain more followers of one school of thought but what good is it if they are pro-Asian and anti-X?? Division is not the key to solving our problems. At the end of the day they are making a living out of it and don’t want to risk that. Why do you care so much about what other channels are or aren’t doing. This video and some of your other ones are looking to chase clout. 😂

I don't think he's causing division...just decided to make a video observing growth of the Fung Bros channel. Fungs can however do whatever they want as they've amassed a good fortune doing YT and subsequently investing in other money making opportunities they're passionate about as well. Also, the Fungs are now W2s to RU-vid as well...they even mentioned that YT is paying for their phat 2 BR/2 BA apartment complex in Manhattan. Their compensation from YT is probably more tied to meeting a quota of releasing higher quantities of videos per week opposed to subscribers/views like it used to be as a 1099 LLC.

I mean how big is their market? A lot of Chinese Chinese people get their media from weibo or Chinese language based platforms, their only demographic is Asian American. @@ChangNation I believe their "old content" is what got Strictly Dumpling to 4.22 million subscribers....almost double of what the Fungs have now...which doesn't include Mikey Chen's personal channel possessing 1.6 million subs. I feel like you are conflating view count with video quality and I just don’t agree. If the Fungbros cared about that so much they would of just continued with the food videos mainly. But I think that they know that that isn’t really contributing much to society anymore compared to them speaking about Asian American issues. A large part of why those videos were so popular was also because they brought in so many attractive women guest and YT is primarily male audience. I personally think it’s great that they’d rather pursue something they feel more passionate about even if it costed them a lot of views and revenue. I’ve watched them ever since 2013 and my only critique with their current podcast uploads are that I wish they would take a firmer stance on topics at times because they usually seem to be very neutral-internet friendly with their opinions even though they try to cover “serious” topics.

I know how you feel about these guys, what I'd like to point out to people is compared to their peers I think they have done well. Wong Fu for example basically are a super boba lib channel and they represent everything I think is wrong about how some people view Asian diaspora issues. They are way too over sensitive about what other races think to really speak honestly about asian issues. JK News are basically dead and never had any serious things to say about Asian diaspora issues anyway. Ryan Higa just doesn't need to do youtube anymore. Fung bros are the only channel that has: 1. Stuck around and 2. Speak candidly about Asian issues without white washing shit down. They have my respect for that.We need more of them and less of Wong Fu.

Seeing how this video game out 5 months ago, the Fungs have since dropped from 2.18 million to 2.17 million subscribers....having said that, I believe their specific agreement with YT has changed as a higher up at Google (likely an Asian male) signed off on these guys bringing them in as W2 full-time base salary earners while even paying for their fly studio/crib in NYC. I believe their arrangement now places a quota of "how many videos to upload a week" which can vary from food, culture, fashion, travel, and Asian issues while no longer monetarily rewarding/punishing them for how many views each release gets.

Although nothing you stated when it comes to the raw data is incorrect about these guys, as a RU-vidr since 2009 who worked with MCNs (multi-channel networks) and CMAs (content management agencies), I can only speak for myself personally when I say burnout is a real-thing not just for traditional kinds of work but even within new media. As you said yourself -the podcast / commentary clips that they and others have transitioned into in contrast to earlier aterial that was considered "higher-end," is less cumbersome and time-consuming. I'm sure you know how tedious it is to put together even this video as I've seen you do a couple and they're pretty solid editing-wise. Some people have other things that they end up wanting to do and unfortunately there is only so much time in each day to do an infinite amount of things both good and bad. I wouldn't be surprised since they're Millennials like me (I assume your Gen Z) and just have other things potentially offline that they're engaged with like dealing with a gf, family, friends, etc... I could definitely be wrong but I know relative to me they still publish a lot and any content that is at least substantive is better than what could be nothing from my perspective.

Many videos I stopped watching midway through and never come back to finish. the Fung bros style of light hearted comedy and talk is great for skits and food videos but out of place on these serious topics. I would say they are up to the job but probably scared to take more firmer stances. Truthfully they do have more knowledge on Asian-American topics than 99% of Asian Americans. They’ve showed they know and try to learn at least a bit of language and culture from the foods they’ve eaten and none of my Asian American friends are researching into articles and statistics regarding Asian Americans like they do. They’ve lived in numerous cities and always give credits to the cheap Asian restaurants which says something rather than just promoting rich area restaurants. They grew up in south Seattle as I do which is also a huge center for different Asian American ethnicities and speak about their friends from there

Some advice: lower the background music relative to your voice, stop using the fucking click sound effect for everything and just in general cut down on side effects and when you do use them, use them with quieter audio. One thing I disliked was that you failed to mention just how “safe” the Fung Bros are. No mention of the plurality of people committing violent acts against Asian people (hint, it isn’t white people), as well as presenting Asian homogeneity (in their home countries) in a slightly negative light. They avoid the elephant of the room on those attacking Asians, many times even elderly Asian-Americans in America, or robbing their stores, because this demographic is hard to criticize. They attribute East Asian success to some magic cultural factor, and the “model minority myth”, despite East Asian IQs being higher even for adoptees, IQ being mostly immutable. Even though it would be controversial, I feel like if you did a video on these uncomfortable truths, it could find some success.
@misoandramen
@misoandramen 11 месяцев назад
“East Asian IQs being even higher for adoptees.” Do you have a superiority complex? There is literally no research to support this farce of a claim. In any event it’s fair to say that most Asian adoptees are adopted into white middle-class families that are generally well off. Measure of intelligence has NOTHING to do with race. Think before you post fake observations. Additionally your post has a slight tinge of racism. You mentioned a “certain group” has been targeting Asians and committing certain crimes and you are expecting someone else to criticize them assuming that this is best for the Asian American community. If you need empathy go to therapy. There is no reason to use fire to fight fire. You judging a group based solely on what you see on the news makes you well.. a complete ignorant. Violence is not right but neither is calling out people based on their skin color. I say this as an Asian American myself. The Fung bros don’t need hate. By them choosing a side they risk cancellation from the other group. It’s a lose-lose situation. Hence being the middleman in this situation is actually the wiser thing to do. If you want respect from every race you can’t pity one over the other. That is not how equality works
@keemstarkreamstar7069
@keemstarkreamstar7069 11 месяцев назад
@@misoandramenYou fundamentally misunderstand what I’m talking about. You are the one who only watches news, because I have literally looked at the statistics behind my claims and will now provide studies and sources for you to peruse if you truly aren’t ignorant and supposedly do more than just watch the news: first up - Asian IQ! Different ethnic groups have different average IQs, this was pointed out in Charles Murray’s The Bell Curve in 1994. Activists, calling him racist, asked the American Psychological Association to test themselves to debunk his racism. The APA found a persistent 15 IQ gap between white and black populations in America, the same one that Murray mentioned. At no level are these average IQ differences contested within professional institutions, although the explanations for the gaps are contested. Thankfully, we have twin studies to control for variables like environment! IQ has a very high hereditary component, and things such as the Minnesota Twin Studies have confirmed that environment in a developed country plays very little role by adulthood in regards to the gap itself. Throughout these studies, the fifteen point IQ gap between whites and blacks persisted. These IQ gaps between white and blacks, and between Asians and whites, have been observed for roughly a century or so. East Asians have an IQ roughly a third of a standard deviation higher than that of whites, on average, a standard deviation in IQ being 15 points, the same space between the average white and average black person. Again, these gaps are NOT CONTESTED by any professional body. Now lets look at adoption studies where these adopted East Asians, raised in only white middle class environments in societies apparently prejudiced against them, managed to outperform other middle class white kids. The intelligence of Korean children adopted in Belgium (1992) and Does age at adoption and geographic origin matter? A national cohort study of cognitive test performance in adult inter-country adoptees (2008), which is about Korean adoptees in Sweden. Both groups of Korean adoptees, raised in about average white Swedish and Belgian families, outperformed white Swedes and Belgians of the same strata. Looking at SAT data, we can see that the poorest bracket of white students performs roughly on par with the richest bracket of black students, and that the poorer Asian students perform roughly as well as the more middle-class white students. This is the reason for affirmative action, and why Asians are (were?) given that handicap. Without any restrictions, the top campuses of our country would look overwhelmingly Asian (mostly East Asian with some Brahmins) and white (of which Ashkenazi Jews would be overrepresented due to their academic talent). The stereotype behind Asians (mostly East Asians and fairer South Asian Brahmins) being smart is because, ON AVERAGE, they are smarter. Are there dumber East Asians? Sure, but proportionately less than that of other groups. Being on a bell curve (normal distribution), roughly 15% of black people are smarter than the average white person, or about 7 million black people nationally. However, roughly 85% of black people are less smart than the average white person. This has been roughly known since WEB DuBoise recognized a “talented tenth” among the black population. Lastly lets look at violent hate crimes against Asians, shall we? Thanks to the handy-dandy FBI Data Explorer tool, we can see Anti-Asian hate crimes of the past two and four years controlled by ethnic background of the perpetrator. Roughly ~50% of anti-Asian hate crimes were perpetrated by white people (this includes the vast majority of Hispanics under “white” despite most being mestizos, so it’s even inflated). Despite this, White people make up over 60% of the U.S. population, meaning they are UNDER-REPRESENTED when it comes to anti-Asian hate-crimes, in respect to the size of America’s white population. African Americans, on the other hand, make up roughly ~30% of anti-Asian hate crimes, despite being only 13% of the population. This means that they are OVER-REPRESENTED, and, per capita, they are twice as likely as white people to commit an anti-Asian hate crime, and their overrepresentation increases if we narrow it down to violent hate crimes. Even when we disregard explicit hate crimes, African Americans are disproportionately those behind the murders and robbings of Asian-Americans. This isn’t “the news”, this is statistical reality and the broader picture of things on a national scale. Now, will you actually look at the facts presented, or will you continue to arrogantly believe that the handful of anecdotes that television or newspapers provide you is the full story?
@keemstarkreamstar7069
@keemstarkreamstar7069 11 месяцев назад
@@misoandramenBefore asking, “is it -ism”, ask, “is it true or is it false?” if you want actual, accurate answers to the world we live in. What if the world we live in is one where what one would call “-ism” is simply the truth? How could one know? A good place to start is the fact that different demographics have different average IQs, that all professional bodies at least begrudgingly recognize this, and that these IQ gaps are resistant against literally any measure-able control variable, whether that be class and economic background, family structure, etc. When people attribute dysfunction to “socio-economics”, they never seem to even entertain the idea that the causality might, in most cases, be the other way around. People in China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia are far less violent than African Americans, who, on average, have a higher income than them. Keep in mind that the countries listed make up over half the world’s total population, for which the common theories of criminology seemingly do not apply to them. Now you might be thinking, what about the fact America has more guns? Well lets look at homicide rate vs gun ownership rate. When doing so by states, one finds an almost perfect non-correlation, a straight line. Even looking at the major urban areas of gun-crazy states like Boise, one finds a very low homicide rate. West Virginia, as dysfunctional as it is, has a homicide rate that only hovers around the middle of the list, despite being the fourth poorest.

Asian American RU-vid media has generally always been corny to me. That, I’m my opinion, is their ceiling. But they’re sticking to it because that’s what they know and that’s what gave them attention. David So’s criticisms of them shows that he gets it. Their new wave of content on Asian issues is just a continuation of this corniness. They’re appealing to embittered millennials who grew up with the BS they had to battle. But it’s a completely different game at the moment. You have to learn to adapt a grow as people. Ain’t nobody got time for the beefs you engaged in when flip phones were cool. I feel issues the Fungs have stem from being slaves to just putting out content like crazy since graduating from college. I mean this effort definitely made them well off from a monetary standpoint but they never got to overcome their demons/insecurities from an individual standpoint going off....traveling the world on their own...making new friends, etc. If they did interact with new people, it was always done on a collective two brothers at the same time basis with an agenda to use for their new videos. Look at acting comedians such as Jim Carrey & the late Robin Williams for example...so much time, blood, sweat, and tears trying to make it in the entertainment industry to the point of both guys struggling immensely with their insecurities & confidence issues in relation to their dating lives.
