Welcome back to the workshop, we're back again this week with our 2023 Honda Civic FL5 Type R to carry out brake maintenance to our AP Racing Big Brake Kit as well as further product development for Hybrid Racing's new full adjustable short shifter.
As some of you will know, the FL5 like a scalpel - there's not much else out there quite as sharp, however as of late we've been encountering a small issue where the car drifts off to one side. After some quick investigation, we found that we were experiencing some brake binding on our AP Racing Front Big Brake Kit.
For a car using standard brakes, this issue wouldn't arise for another few thousand miles if at all; the reason we are encountering this problem is because the AP Racing calipers we are using do not have dust seals around the pistons, meaning they are more vulnerable to being effected by brake dust build up. Luckily the fix is simple - take off the front wheels, remove the brake pads, expose the pistons and give them a clean up.
Even though standard cars may not be as susceptible to this, there is no harm in following the same process we have done in this video to keep your brakes performing in top form and as efficiently as possible.
After sorting out our binding brakes, we move inside the car to carry out a test fit of Hybrid Racing's new Short Shifter. The team at Hybrid suspected that their shifter may not fit on a RHD car, as the trim surrounding the shifter was in a different location. Thankfully this was no issue however it does seem that the shifter assembly mounting positions differ between the LHD and RHD cars! We managed to get 3 out of the 4 fixings in place but more importantly we have some gathered some valuable feedback and data to give back to Hybrid Racing so that they can adapt their shifter for the RHD market!
