Friend had this comment and I was wondering what your opinion of it is. "only thing I think he missed was the opening blue themed shot with Lawrence looking up to Holo wasn't just Marketing play. I would think it was deliberate in that Holo has become so much of his world that she is even standing right on top of what is his life's business" Just copy/pasted from a chat.
+SaturdayCoOp that's a valid interpretation, but lawrence becomes a part of her world to an equal degree, so I still feel like it doesn't properly reflect the balance between them. The image of the wheat field beneath the blue sky was pretty much an ideal way to depict them
+Mother's Basement though if you consider season 2's shift to focus on Lawrence's viewpoint, this shot and interpretation makes more sense, as it shows that Lawrence is enveloped in and awestruck by Holo's presence
Yes, but it was with her that several incredible things happened due to the supernatural, that was a picture of their actual, not metaphorical, first meeting. The sunrise together that follows is a blend of colors to show that despite that they go along together. Keep in mind the reason you don't see Lawrence as often in this is because we are told the story through his perspective, and while he is a main character, most of the conflicts are Holo's personal turmoils even when we don't see her on screen for a surprising amount of time, it is all about her, it is less about an introduction but a reminder through the first arc. This also represents how Holo is emotionally alone through what happens, but on Lawrence's world, he is always with her.
At 3:32 when you talk about Diana I think you could have added more. I think the feathers also symbolize Diana's true form as a giant bird because she's at the center of the feathers when they enter her home. They imply she's not human in the light novel and she once had a relationship like the one Holo has with Lawrence. But overall this is a great video!
I think you may have missed some meanings on some shot, this is my take on it. 1.At the "dream" shot, holo is usually asleep, thinking the world as she have always been, and with the arrival of lawrence, symbolized by the leaves, she wakes up and "realizes" that she is practically unmoving in the river of time, whereas lawrence, moves quickly downriver. 2. At the "pagan dance" and "holding hands at the end of the OP" shot, it tells/foreshadows us about the plot. At the inn dance shot, it's dominated by yellow, which as with the whole pyrite auction thingy is lawrence, devastated by the fartbag kid's gamble, wanted to get back with holo and he was the one who did most of the bidding. In the holding hands shot, dominated by blue, tells us about what happened after he got scammed by the blonde girl. (sorry dudes I forgot her name, too lazy to rewind) It was the opposite, with lawrence giving up and it was holo instead who did a lot to encourage lawrence to continue pursuing his dreams/journey.
+Holo The Wise Wolf The author have announced that there will be a sequel for the light novel this April. The hope for 3rd anime season is still there man ;--;
+Garrett Thomas I'm not giving up hope just yet. If D Gray Man can get a new season after 5+ years of inactivity in the Anime World, then I think Spice and Wolf can as well.
This video makes me so impossibly sad. I love Spice and Wolf to death (I've read up to Volume 9 of the light novels) and this just reminds me that this truly beyond amazing series will never see a third season. Holo and Lawrence have easily one of the best relationships (romantic or otherwise but especially romantic) in fiction and more people need to know about it and see how it progresses (seriously, the volume right after the anime ends has SO many amazing moments between the two since it focuses pretty much entirely on their relationship).
I just finished this season. I love this series, but I felt season 2 didn't have as strong as an ending as the first one. And it's also a shame there's no season 3. At least there are still the books to read!
I wonder if the initial shot with Holo wasn't more meaningful than you think. It shows Lawrence being overpowered by her, but it next showed the sun cresting of the horizon, in contrast, quite weak, and incapable of filling the screen on its own, compared to the last opening, it feels diminished, almost calling out at the fact that Lawrence is aging, and will die eventually.
Oh, and in the ending shot, it was connected to the first shot, because it was a blue exit. In a situation where they should have produced an equal "aura", Craft was very overpowered by Holo, because he was diminishing while she was strong as always, but since it was a little bit white it seems almost like Holo's making up for Craft's weakness as he continues to grow older, and "picking up the slack" as it were.
I really like how you present your videos, I never thought I'd be so interested in the symbolism etc. of openings. I decided to watch School Live because of your video on it which also reminded me of Higurashi and its openings.
+Igeljäger I did but I felt they were lacking in comparison to the anime. It feels like so much is lost without the animation, the music, and the voices. They're still worth a read but there's no contest when comparing them to the adaptation.
+Humg12 Lol, seriously? Nothing is lost, it's the source material. Plus they're two different mediums of storytelling. While the anime has the animation, music, and voices, as you said, the novels have they're own strong points that the anime can't hope to have. This could be attention to detail, inner monologues, and poetic wordplay. In the end though, it really is all about the heart; all mediums are capable of it.
TheRantae Anime can definitely have all 3 of those. Detail can be shown more easily than it can be described, characters can still speak poetically and inner monologues can be done (though they are generally harder to pull of than in a novel). A good anime should always improve on its source material.
Humg12 Sure, they can, but animes are heavily restricted by budget, length and time. In most cases, this produces a less than ideal adaptation. Books have no such restrictions like that, so it's much easier to produce a better story. Another thing is that adaptations can lose the meaning of a story that the author originally had. A good example of this is Tokyo Ghoul. The manga had so much beauty in its storytelling, symbolism and foreshadowing, but the anime took a crap on it, only focusing on exposition instead. Only episodes I could say were good was the first and last episode. Anyway, my point is, it really depends on the director and scriptwriters to adapt a book/manga meaningfully. The anime could be better than the source material, like Your Lie in April. It's just that a lot of things are lost. You're right, an adaption should improve on its source material, but that's not how it is in most cases.
tl;dr read the novel, it's in english and on amazon. The truth about the anime industry is that they want to make as much money as possible. That's why there are so many ecchi anime because its a 100% way to get money. Bringing back an unpopular anime like spice and wolf would be something they could NEVER do because the risk is too high.
Watching this show made me have thoughts of how Holo being immortal and all might be lurking behind the scenes manipulating modern economics through the connections and power structures that she gained through the ages. Guiding all her descendants from the shadows all while searching for a way to reconnect with Lawrence in one way or another. She might be financing genetic research to try and clone him or maybe teaming up with Diana to find a mystical way to find his reincarnation or something. I suck at making fanfics so I hope someone out there writes one on modern day Holo
Hey, I just wanted to say how instead we can make it about the states and church ceasing to be. This would symbolize the turning of a new age in the series and our own world (yay for voluntaryism and agorism). If we could somehow work some gods to give all mortal the gift of internal life for their efforts towards peace, then that'd be pretty great. It also raises opportunities for holo and Lawrence to question their own morality in things they've said before like in season 2 about slaves.
I love characters Yor Forger, Yoruichi, and Zero Two… but there is something about Holo that just looking at her makes me feel calm and happy it’s weird and I don’t get it but I absolutely LOVE Holo! I think It might be because she’s just one of the cutest fictional characters Iv seen!
I think that the beginning where the shot is filled with blue is representative of how much of the editors wanted Holo to drown out Lawrence in the opening. Basically, it's a cinematic fuck you.
I'd like to see Parasite The Maxim, Madoka Majica, Death Note, Ergo Proxy, Mirai Nikki, Stein's Gate,No Game No Life, Fate/Zero, or Black Rock Shooter. They all seem like they are incredible intros with a lot of hidden meaning that I'd love to see you explore.
1:00 - 1:31 In which case, the "overwhelming blue" and the beginning of Spice and Wolf's S2 OP is not only indicative of Holo's possible overpowering relationship to Lawrence and Holo's effect on the viewer, but an indicator of the "higher-ups" relationship to those who watch Spice and Wolf. I believe it bears noticing that those who watch Spice and Wolf are now enthralled. We can't pull our eyes away and we crave for more.
Ahh, I want a season 3... Speaking of romantic shows that need a season 3, would love to see one of these on My Teen Romantic Comedy SNAFU. Not sure how much you'll fall for the first OP of that show, but I have a feeling you'll love the second one
if you want to watch spice and wolf go to kissanime or gogoanime but you will regret watching it cause there may never be a season 3 and if there isn't its just a waste to watch in general to watch the show and it really makes me disappointed in funimation for not making a 3rd season they finally got into the state that everyone was waiting for state then it just ends off there the only way to actually go through the rest of the story you have to well sorta buy the books and its really annoying atm if there is never gonna be a season 3 i will never get to finish the story that's all i can say about it right now
Are you ever going to make actual anime reviews? Your analyzes are very interesting and entertaining (even though I think sometimes you're looking too much into "little details" and giving the directors too much credit. Not that I mind, it's what makes it good) and I'd love to see them on actual shows and not just 90 seconds clips.
you want to do an "Whats in an op" about the first PP opening OR the op of psycho pass season 2 *uses some Jedi powers to convince you* *notices it doesnt work * *uses his geass*
UnstopablePatrik yes I understand that gaining popularity once you finished a series is pretty hard but still I want to believe that it will happen, the anime can still gain popularity by third parties like doujinshi
