I think a rod and reel arsenal video explaining their uses would be great
@marbari7310
@marbari7310 5 лет назад
I agree 100%. A video like that would be a great reference as opposed to trying to remember which video a specific rod and reel combo was used in. And John, a single video inclusive of many links to the tackle used could potentially yield many referred purchases. Please consider while the season is still young!!! I asked Halk to do one as well.

Zach! Look at John's highlight video of 12-23-18. He has a lot of his tackle listed (including rods & reels) and it's broken down by fish species. It's basically what I asked of him in this previous comment, and what I think you're looking for. I didn't know it was there until I rewatched several of his videos. It's worth watching.

John, thank you. That's exactly what I needed. I especially like your packaging with a small tackle bag, Zip Loc bags, extra teasers and the tiny cooler. I had been using a larger bag with those plastic compartmented tackle (Plano 3600, etc.) and the issue is that they are cumbersome to open and close versus the Zip Loc. Also, the larger bucktails don't necessarily fit well into the compartments. The trick seems to be keep as much as you can in soft vessels. The hard shelled boxes and compartments add weight and complexity. The old KISS principle wins again. Thanks for an elegant solution. Now, its time to reorganize. Also, I just printed and laminated your check list. Good luck this year and be safe on the water. Looking forward to your 2019 videos. Bob Meli

John, a friend of mine a year or two ago was leaving the fishing pier as I was just getting there and asked me if I needed some bait. Since bull red drum were the fish everyone was after, the bait of choice was spot heads. He gave me a large (3 to 5 gallon) zip lock bag with heads and they were soaking in a brine he had concocted. I asked what he used and he said he saved every drop of gulp juice he gets and stores it in Mason jars in a spare refrigerator. His brine was pure gulp juice and garlic powder! Within a couple minutes after casting I had a 49 inch drum on the line when others weren't having as much success. Made for a great day fishing!

Great story. Whatever is in that juice sure seems to work for a lot of species.

What I love about this bag that I could. not. find. when I looked around was two strap handles! Everything I saw had the flap over the top with a single handle sewn to the flap. You can't really move it safely without securing the (flap) lid. Same thing with my high-end camera bag I use for my photography.

No clue as to why anyone would dislike this type of video other than to troll around RU-vid trying to hurt peoples algorithms... These type of videos are some of the most helpful of all! Something you didn't mention having in that bag were Otter Tails which I know you carry with you on a regular basis.... ever since I saw your video where you showed the trick about replacing the curly tail portion of the Gulp grubs after a Sea Bass or other species bite the the tails of the 6" curly tail grubs it has saved me a small fortune when it comes to purchasing 6" Gulp grubs! (Except for the methiolate color which the Otter Tail company does not make.. hopefully they will in the future)....a question I have ...... I know that 99.9% of the time you are using the Quantum Accurist baitcasting reel and whichever casting rod you prefer depending on the trip you're on.... I prefer using baitcasting gear also but I have a few friends that just won't switch from spinning gear! I would like to help them figure out the perfect spinning setup to purchase that could also be used for Seabass, Blackfish, and Scup.... what in your opinion would be the best combo without breaking the bank because these guys also tend to be slightly on the cheap side lol... One rod that I told a friend to use because he already had it was the Tsunami Classic 7ft heavy action spinning rod. The main reason he bought this rod was to throw a hollow body frogs for largemouth because again he won't try casting gear...... Thanks in advance John! Love your videos as well as your books!

I watch every video you up load you helped me and my two kids a lot. One question I’m fishing sandy hook bay I also over do it with buck tails always trying to find the perfect one. The top teaser I always have a issue with should it be 1/2 oz weight with gulp swimming mullet or just a 3/0 4/0 hook with shrimp. Or these new tsunami teasers you use. Any info I would greatly appreciate.

Great look inside your bags/coolers! I do have much the same gear following your guidance over the course of many videos. I too have the sloppy gulp collection. Liked your idea of bringing bucktails home, rinsing, cleaning and storing in individual zip-locs. Wonder do you ever repair/repaint your bucktails? Also wondered what is your strategy for recharging gulp baits?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 5 лет назад
Those bucktails really hold up. Haven't needed to repaint. S&S does a great job. I usually have a gulp container on the boat and stick the rig in it when I go up to make a drift.

Excellent Video John. I have a separate checklist for different trip purposes, ie. Inshore or Offshore and whether my plan includes trolling or bottom fishing or both. The main thing is to MAKE A CHECKLIST and work it. I make updates to refine the checklist after each trip. As time goes on the checklist will contain exactly what is needed for each type of trip and (hopefully) nothing more. To insure success, my process is to mark off each item as each item is staged at the foot of the garage or yard, (which is referred to as the "staging area) accounting for everything on the list. Just before departure I load all required items securely into the boat and/or truck. With this process, the only thing that can mess me up is if I fail to use the checklist or someone moves something in or out of the staging area before it is loaded for the trip. Good luck this year and thanks for the great videos.

@JohnSkinnerFishing

MH -is .5-1.5-ounce, H with 4 inches off the tip is 2-4 ounces, XH is 5+ ounces. These days I use a Jigging World Nexus H with 4 inches off the tip for everything from 1.5-6 ounces.

I see bug repellent... IDK about saltwater but bug repellent with DEET drives freshwater fish away and away from the area.I haven't worn bug repellent in over 30 yrs. I also think smoking,whether it be the tar,nicotine or what ever other chemical is in cigs also effect the bite.I haven't actually performed tests but have noticed when I mess up and hold a cig with the hand I apply bait to the hook it seems there isn't as many bites.

I thought it was just me. Lol... I was hoping that you were going to show what you brought when you were targeting Fluke from the surf, not the boat. My problem is that I always think there might be some Stripers around and so I wind up never knowing what to carry on those long beach hikes. I always wind up bringing a few Bass lures with my Fluke gear or a few Fluke lures with my Bass gear. Either way I'm never satisfied! How do you deal with the surf fishing aspect if you don't mind?
@JohnSkinnerFishing
@JohnSkinnerFishing 5 лет назад
From shore, there's not much fluke gear to bring. A few bucktails in the 0.5-1.5 ounce range, and a couple of teaser rigs. Those same bucktails are good for stripers, so just bring along some otter tail strips for those jigs and you can fish them for bass. Then add whatever bass plugs. My first two bass videos this year use fluke jigs.
