A reciprocating saw will not cut the ceramic part so you had the right tool there. I just had a hell of a time removing a corrosion welded one. Used a dremel tool to cut the steel sleeve, and hammered it to break the ceramic. Was wearing a respirator the whole time just in case, but wanted to see if anyone knew what the inside contained :)

there should be crystal zarconia crsytal which produce the voltage.... which is missing in ur video

Do you know what is happening with an O2 sensor that is showing "no signal"? Do I assume that means the wire is broke, or could it mean the sensor is just too caked up with gunk to get a proper reading?

I believe the coating on the white ceramic is platinum.

An inspired idea, using a pipe cutter on it. Here's the reason I was curious about what's inside it: I will be cutting mine while still on the exhaust, so I can use a shorter socket to remove it (not enough clearance above it to fit my longer sockets).
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 3 года назад
Thanks! Sounds like a good way to remove one, but do you plan on installing a new one, or are you just going to plug it up? If space is that tight, there's an oxygen sensor crow's foot (offset socket) that may help.
@rogerbritus9378
@rogerbritus9378 3 года назад
@@CarsSimplified Thanks for the suggestion, I'm aware of that socket but it just isn't strong enough for the situation because it's open on one side. My issue is removing the 21-year old original O2 sensor, that's now a rust-welded part of the exhaust pipe. This is the one I will cut off for easy access to its nut at the base. For installing the new one I'm just going to use an open wrench, won't be difficult with the thread clean and the antiseize as lubricant. Commenting tips the algorithm, so let's make you famous! Next time use a nut cruncher on the porcelain innards and film it exploding in a slow-motion close up shot. LOL

what are the differences between a top and bottom o2 sensor?? I know they have different functions but im wondering if they were manufactured any differently and over all universal.. "as long as they are properly plugged into the proper wiring harness .
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 5 лет назад
A few cars use the same part number for the universal style sensors, so I think the most common difference is just the plug, but the upstream ones closer to the engine deal with a little more heat, so they are probably made to handle that better. Same basic parts inside for sure. If I remember to label a used upstream and downstream one day, I'll make another video like this.

in the beginning of the vid your holding 2 sensors... what im trying to figure out is this... those sensors connect into the engine by the metal head, and the plastic parr clips in to the other part of the 02 sensor that is connected to a module... how can i get the correct name and or find a place that sells the part of the 02 sensor that you connect too...
@CarsSimplified
@CarsSimplified 4 года назад
The part I think you are describing is referred to as a pigtail, harness connector, or plug, but these terms are used interchangeably for both sides of the connection, so it may still be difficult to find the part you are looking for. I know there is another term I am forgetting, but I'm pretty sure it is less frequently used than the ones I mentioned. It should be available either online or in parts stores, but there may be some odd versions out there that are hard to find. There should be just a handful of part numbers that cover most of what's on the road, so hopefully you have one of the common connection designs.

Also dont be fooled by silver looking wires as they are actually stainless as stainless deals well with head where the copper wires get broken over time
@brandonwetterman5142

I believe those sensore measures the temp of the exhaust so you give the cylinders more oxygen " more or less fuel " and then the car with run hotter or colder .
@Roman-xb9xn
@Roman-xb9xn 4 года назад
Brandon, I think you are right. I don't see how it can sense the oxigen level especially while some sensors are completely sealed. Most likely it's some kind of semiconductor that changes resistance or voltage based on the temperature.
@user-zy3no2zb5q
@user-zy3no2zb5q 4 года назад
It directly senses the oxygen concentration in the exhaust, not the temperature. Either by creating a voltage(caused by different concentrations of O2 between outside and inside air) or the o2 levels changing the ceramic's resistance, depending on the type of the sensor (zirconia or titania).

So where is the part that gets dirty that fails
@tbthedozer
@tbthedozer 4 месяца назад
It’s likely platinum, a very un reactive metal, the ceramic appears to be zirconium, another not very reactive material. Based on other videos I have seen…fwiw
