Have you asked your host family if you can reach out to their previous au pairs and found that you're DUN DUN DUN - their first??
Don't worry! We've both been there. Although we do both regularly advise that you should try and find families who have had au pairs before, there are certainly positives and negatives to either situation!
For one thing, if you're the first au pair - you can dictate what's "normal" a little more than if your family already has an au pair rulebook.
But, what do you think? Were you a FIRST au pair? Had your host family had au pairs before? We'd love to hear from you in the comments.
Thank you so much to everyone who watches, comments, likes and subscribes - we really really appreciate it!

My experience as a first time au pair for a family that had a nanny for like 8 years was a little different. I think I struggled to connect with them a little more and they maybe weren't as interested in spending time with me as I hoped. It was more a friendly relationship than 'part of the family'. So talk to the family about their expectations of your relationship. If they haven't thought about it, they should! For me personally it was fine but I can see how it could be lonely if you really want that connection.

Great post! We are first time hosts in the US and thought this really rang true for us. The first AP is definitely special and it took us some time to get our bearings with discipline, boundaries, and communication. Of course we are still working on it! Our first AP is an extension year rematch so she knew more than we did 🤭

i would add to avoid families that have had numerous au pairs...like more than 4 o 5, it's probably a messy family

Hey guys. I’ve found my host family and will be jetting off to Pennsylvania in the summer. They have never had an pair before but the family are super nice. The mum sends me updates on their life and photos of the kids a few times a week. And she is suggesting all the places we can go together. My main worry is that when I first arrive I know I’ll be nervous which is to be expected. I will spend time with the family of course but I’m afraid of taking myself off to my room for alone time for fear of being seen as ‘rude’. Sometimes I do just like my own company - what’s the best way to approach this with my family? Just suck it up and carry on or speak to them when I arrive?

Have you guys worked for a single dad before? I got two options right now... To work for a single dad or a family with two parents both from Spain. I'm having a hard time deciding because the dad has preteen daughters who speak English and we had a lot of fun talking over Skype. The other family has a 4 and 5 year old who do not know any English and I'd be the first au pair. I love both families but having a difficult time deciding.

I'm not sure if you've answered this before, but do a lot of families expect you to speak perfect French (for me it will be Spanish) or to speak it a lot? I know some Spanish but I'm not by any means fluent. The contract my host mom emailed me (I'm leaving in a couple weeks) said I will speak English with the kids and Spanish with the parents and friends. I'm scared that I won't know enough! P.S. -- thanks for all the videos!! y'all are beautiful!

Heyyy, I au paired in Spain and my family LOVED teaching me Spanish! The kids were very young though so I we often had to go into Spanish to make sure we all knew what was happening. I think the only problem was with some of the older members of the family (great grandparents etc ) as they spoke old, almost dialect Spanish. If you're upfront with your family it will all be ok, just don't nod along if you really don't have a clue (I did all the time hah) and use things like word reference if you're really stuck :) if you're really worried, maybe try duolingo or memrise etc before you go. From my experience, after a couple of weeks your language level will improve so quickly so I don't think you need to worry :)

Au Pair, Oh Paris hi thank you. I am without any experiences, and for me, taking care of a one year old girl is just too much, so I have decided not to go...
