What's it like to be a robot? | Leila Takayama

We already live among robots: tools and machines like dishwashers and thermostats so integrated into our lives that we'd never think to call them that. What will a future with even more robots look like? Social scientist Leila Takayama shares some unique challenges of designing for human-robot interactions -- and how experimenting with robotic futures actually leads us to a better understanding of ourselves.

I don't know why she called thermostat a robot, but only electronic part of the car a robot. Robot pretty clearly the function, not the means. Is mechanical washing machine somehow not robot, but if you slap an electronic controller on it it suddenly is? I don't get the entire over-personification of the robot thing. Cute robot = robot of the future, washing machine = not robot of the future. Noone cares. Robotic arm is only human if there is human operating it, and only because of that.

pets are similar to the concept of robots she explained. a pet is the reflection of its owner. robots are the same.

💊 - we humans have this trait, that we think a lot as a species, along with progress and automation (too few battles for survival, too much time to rest) we will think even more and fall into a mouse utopia, someone will finally press the button and the matrix will reboot.

As a TedTalk I found this to be somewhat pointless, but as an informative short video, it was okay I guess. First talking about different robots (vacuum, cat litter, dishwasher and so on), then it went to the Skype on wheels, which is cool, not really anything new, but still useful. The point about how a person can build empathy was a bit of a reach I think, I get it but we're talking about a boss or other busy people that use this to be able to be in many places at once. So like I said, it was alright as a short video on multiple subjects but not as a TedTalk, if the title was different it might've helped a little bit but still pretty bad in my opinion.

This is fascinating stuff. It appeared to me that, perhaps one of the overlooked elements was the ability for the remote user to fully experience the environment their robot was in. Everyone in the office has the perspective of someone being in the office who otherwise wouldn't have been there (physical presence, motion, face, voice etc.), but take the chap who was disrupting everyone - he didn't know he was banging into stuff nor did he know his volume was too loud for everyone else. Take the kids who played around on it, they didn't perceive it as real - it's unlikely they would have acted in the same way (bumping into people for points) if they were just walking around as humans. So does this raise the question of how to enable the remote user to better perceive (via different forms of feedback) how they are interacting via their robot? That is, simple video playback may not be enough, eg. should they be able to hear themselves? Should they suffer some form of penalty if they do something that is not the social norm, eg. banging into something should mean they lose motion control temporarily? I like the fact that this made me see that robotics is just as much about learning about the human as it is learning about the robot.

David Holland worthwhile is one word also, notice I didnt say it was brilliant, but good. It's a talk I can actually watch and enjoy. when I first read the title, I almost expected some poem-like presentation about how humans suppress robots and that they're next in line for social justice, raising awareness by expressing empathy, but thankfully I was pleasantly surprised by a good, down to earth, talk.

@missylarsson3517

If we have machines doing mechanic tasks better than humans, how is it a gift being “mechanical”? It is actually the other human qualities, our social skills etc. that will be our strength compared to machines.

Robot (Definition) a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer. A washing machine does complex series of actions - ones needed to clean dishes, and is programmable by a computer - the keypad on the washing machine that tells it what cycle to use, etc. Thermostat is a complex series of actions, testing the temperature, adjusting the temperature, and is programmable. How are these not robots?
