I just started watching this (in order) and I think this episode is the first one where somebody as a celebrity was still alive this year (2020). I know once I get to the sixties it will be different. I still haven't gotten to a person who is still alive yet.

I was just thinking how difficult it would be to try to do the mystery guest segment nowadays....people have so many choices about what television programs they watch and what music they listen to, that there are very few celebrities who would be well known to all on the panel as well as the audience. Back in the “Big 3 Network” days, everyone in the country had mostly the same cultural references. But I do think there would be an audience for a witty, intelligent, vanilla show like this still. This show was mostly done before I was born, but I got hooked on it when they had it late nights on GSN.

There was a lot going on behind the scenes.

Depends on what you watch. This honestly reminds me a bit of the D&D twitch show Critical Role in some ways. A well spoken game leader trying to not give the players too much information but still enough to go on, shenanigans by the players now and then and all of them greatly enjoying each other's company. Even has occasional guests.

Not happening. An era gone by and much less individual occupations exist.

Finding candidates for the panel would be a challenge. Even the WML shows taped in the 60's don't compare to these older versions. There existed refined class, mutual respect, intellectual ability, and morality which sadly diminished as my hippie generation came in to being.

Panelists of this magnitude and style do not exist anymore....especially now in our day and time.

@@alansorensen5903 - It's true he did touch people but there was a sense of innocence in his touching. He touched men and women both without any taint of sexuality or lewdness.

That makes sense, since John Daly (in the finale) explained the backup plan they had for mystery guests (John being the Mystery Guest) was based on if the guest should arrive, and how one time, the guest made it at the very last minute. BTF the loudest ovation I ever heard for a mystery guest was Robert Mitchum. You would have thought one of The Beatles showed up.

@@joeambrose3260 Bennett was a man of some renown in his field internationally. He had lived some decades already at this point and was married to a close relative of Ginger Rogers. It was true that many of the guests lived and/or worked in NYC regularly and others visited and stayed for the duration of their appearances on Broadway or at Basin Street East or like venues and would run into him at parties or at their performances or they may even have wanted to write a book about their experiences, so sought a show biz savvy publisher. He had done wonders for publishing. My friend who'd worked for him just died recently and had said he was thoughtful of others as well as quite smart. He and his wife entertained because they were social people and dinner parties were a form of repaying both personal and professional kindnesses and at times seeking out new possibilities for working together with someone with whom one could chat less formally at such an occasion. And they would not run and hide from you if they were a guest in your home. So, it just happened that when he had his Sunday evening (and at times Saturday evening) dinner parties some of the folks were perhaps already signed on to do a MG stint on WML because they were in town working or promoting something or doing a big charity benefit that also landed them at his dinner table. It was not so much coincidence as inevitability. His wife lied to him when she was MG. Ginger Rogers regularly lied to him when she was staying with her cousin while in town and was also to be MG. Others played dumb. He quite honorably removed himself from participating the couple of times someone actually told him who was on, which was not the MG himself.

I was 2 years 2 days old. But, now I love this show. Can't get enough. Obsessed with it. Groucho was very funny. Don't miss that one. He did two shows as a panelist. Played havoc the first time.

I went to go hunt this episode down after finishing "Young Man with a Horn" - he was just wonderful in that even if they did give it a 'hollywood ending.' I know nothing of the film that you've mentioned....that may be next.

I watched this film a short time ago. Wonderful. The final scenes were so traumatic-it broke my heart, too.

It could never happen today... That kind of class and refinement is long gone....and what we have today is crass and vulgar... Remember Family Feud...with Richard Dawson..? Today, that version of the show is absolutely disgusting...nasty questions to get nasty responses.. ...and the contestants respond using words you would never hear on the vintage WML.
