This week's mystery guest, in case a younger viewer might not know, embodied a whole step from one kind of music to another in the 20th century. Arguably modern music wouldn't be what it is without him.

He is the foundation of America's music....if you could only pick ONE PERSON creating, influencing, and representing the composites of American music, it would hands down be Armstrong. Jazz is America's music and Armstrong in the 1920's was jazz's first global star of the music - vocally AND instrumentally.

Turns out Audry Conti was scouted by a Manhattan movie studio after her appearance on WML and was signed to be an actress. Did a couple of movies the most famous of which were _The Joker is Wild_ and _The Naked and the Dead._ Still living, apparently, and as of this writing is 89 years old.

Louise Armstrong. WML got lucky twice. It may be a commercial plug, but here he sang a few lines about his Basin Street engagement. And in his 1964 mystery guest appearance, WML inadvertently got from Louis the singing TV premiere of his song "Hello Dolly!" I suspect if he had brought his trumpet, we would have gotten some notes there as well.

My grandmother had six children during this era (my mother was the youngest and born in '59) and I remember Grandma telling me that in those days, once you were obviously showing, you simply didn't go out in public. It wasn't discussed, and a woman late in pregnancy wouldn't be shown on television. I remember asking her why, since every human alive has existed in a pregnant mother and it seems so odd that anyone would be uncomfortable with this wonderful and natural state of being. And she replied simply, "It was just the way it was." 🤷‍♀️ I'm assuming that Dorothy would not have been allowed to show her pregnant tummy, for fear of the censor.

It must have been sometime during or after 1954 when the producers of "What's My Line" decided to change the way the guests exited the show by having each guest at the end of his or her appearance during the show greet the panel and exit stage left rather than the original practice of exiting stage right behind John Charles Daly (under the original practice, the guests greeted the panel before the start of questioning by the panel).

It is not unusual for the first pregnancy to not gain a lot. It could be her doctor was strick about weight gain. My first pregnancy I gained 17 pounds; my obgyn allowed 2 pounds per month. Ma. Gabriela O. They didn't start doing the panelist walk ons till much later in the series. Every episode up till that point opened with the panelists all seated. But it's true that occasionally, after they started the practice of the panelists walking out to their seats in the openings, there would be a reason to keep everyone seated from the start (e.g., if someone on the panel couldn't walk well due to an injury.) This will soon become standard, used until the UPA animation sequence starting in the later 1950s.

I have often wonder'd why John has to explain the rules to every contestant before every game. One explanation per show would be enough. Now he says that viewers have been criticizing him for this but he is worried that there might be somebody who doesn't fully understand how the scoring works. After so many years you'd think that either the contestant would know how the rules were (I bet they all had seen the show on TV!) or that they should have been told before the show begun. I don't think they were on the show for the money anyhow.

brainsfallinout26 That would be my guess, as well -- that it was chiefly for the benefit of someone viewing the show for the first time. As difficult as it is to imagine now, not every household had a television set in the early and mid-1950's, so I'm sure that, each week, there were people literally tuning in for the first time. However, I will say that JCD carried the practice a bit too far, not stopping until around 1962, if I remember viewing the episodes correctly.

I wonder if the panel started out seated because Dorothy was pregnant? the next show she's had a baby and she never even looked pregnant.

During this period of the show the panel always started out seated. They didn't begin to walk in from offstage until a year or two later.

This was the first episode with the new jack-in-the-box intro. At 5:21, Dorothy asked, “Is it smaller than a breadbox? (39th usage). At 10:03, Steve asked, “Is it bigger than a breadbox” and then asked about 2 breadboxes (40th usage). Steve said “good night, boys” for the 19th time. 17:28 Enjoyed Louis’s short performance (a creative plug!). He then made a slight goof by exiting upstage right.

On the intro, what is your opinion of this compared to the previous one with the masks? Also I get why all the question marks, but why the boxes?

That first lady seemed unhappy that they caught onto her line so quickly. She wanted that money, lol. The first two contestants are at a huge disadvantage compared to the last one. I know I'd rather go last and have a higher than normal chance of winning the $50. I think the celebrity portion is sometimes too easy because the newspapers always had who was in town at the time and Bennet and Dorothy seemed like they religiously read the papers. Obviously reading newspapers was common but I think those two took it to a whole new level. Their semi celebrity status probably also played a role in knowing who was in town.

17:06 - “I’ll get higher next time” and that wink. Hilarious! If the audience didn’t get the weed reference, the panel certainly did.

He was talking about his voice. Because his voice is very deep and it’s very recognizable. So he said he will get “higher next time” in terms of making his voice more unrecognizable. Not as to weed
@spb7883

@@ThatHonestPersonSorry, but this was definitely about weed. Armstrong - apart from being one of the seminal artists of thr 20th century - was also a *daily* pot user. No shame in that, but it’s a fact.

I always look at the number of views of each episode and for some reason this one has 3-4 times the number of views of the normal WML video. That happens on occasion and it always makes me wonder why that is. I could understand if it had a few hundred more or less, but when it's a few thousand I find it intriguing.
@WhatsMyLine

It's usually a direct result of who the mystery guest is when a video is unusually popular. There's not all that much TV footage of Louis Armstrong.
@2dasimmons
@2dasimmons 9 лет назад
It is after all LOUIS ARMSTRONG as the mystery guest. Mr. Armstrong was not only a musical phenom BUT he was Jewish which started to become known to the public then and now. Actually the only reason I watched this was because I saw SATCHMO was the guest. These days a lot of people are learning that the Jews of the Bible are actually the black folk brought to USA via trans-Atlantic slave trade. I find that amazing!
@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 9 лет назад
2dasimmons I would ask where on earth you got the bizarre idea that Louis Armstrong was Jewish, but that would only encourage more comments along religious lines. You made reference to our living in "end times" in another comment on this video. I respectfully ask that you please keep religion (and politics, or anything else controversial) out of the comments for the videos. Thank you.
@2dasimmons
@2dasimmons 9 лет назад
I had heard several years ago that Louis Armstrong as well as Jazz great Erroll Garner were Hebrews as as the black folk in USA via trans-Atlantic slave trade. There was a UC Berkeley lecture presented by a scholar visiting from Oxford that told the audience that the Negroes in USA who came here through the slave trade were indeed the Hebrews of the Bible. So rather than Jewish, I should have used the term Hebrew since this is more accurate. I will respect your request and will not mention religion. politics, etc @ your videos. Your WML uploads are greatly appreciated.

@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 7 лет назад
Well, none of the shows on this channel are in stereo, fake or otherwise. But the mono audio is supposed to be in both channels, of course. There are a small handful of episodes that have the audio only in one channel, all around this time period in the mid 1950s. I never noticed it watching the recordings because it's just not noticeable unless you're wearing headphones, and can't really fix it at this point without deleting the videos and reposting them. Sorry for the inconvenience, but you should be able to temporarily adjust the audio balance between channels on your end to work around it if you find the single channel audio too distracting.
