Toads are the best.

I just read that female toads and frogs do chirp when an embrace is attempted and the female is not physically ready to breed. It's called a release call. It's not as loud as the male's chirp but is audible in most species. I picked up what I believe to be an adult female oak toad and she let out a tiny little squeak before being released.

Alex, great great job. I just love when kids are into nature as much as yourself. I'm a retired Wildloife Manager and were doing some research to set up a Toad habitat for my 3 yr old Granddaughter. Loved your Toad sexing video. Very informative.

Just rescued a toad from my brothers cellar! Looked skinny and dull in color. Very small to. But hopefully when they grow older and more healthy ill be able to tell if its a boy or a girl! Also, have been watching your never vids for a few months now. Had no idea you ever made a toad video so long ago! You have grown so much but you are still just as great as a amphibian and reptile parent!

I just came across two Toads that were latched together. I had to move them, the pond they choose was not suitable. But they are safe and will probably have completed their business in the next couple days!!

Thank you, Alex. I have always loved toads since I was three years old and used to catch them and release in my great grandma’s garden. My dad taught me to love animals. I would turn over the toad and pet its belly. Now that I am a grown woman with my own garden and a grandma, I am delighted there is a toad in my yard that loves to hide under my garden fountain. I will have to check and see what gender it is ! Funny story: once when I was repotting plants from the garden center and watering them first, a BIG blob of dirt jumped out of the pot and scared the heck out of me because dirt is not supposed to react that way. I put the hose on the chunk of black dirt and it started hopping away-I screamed-live dirt! I put more water on it and to my chagrin and amusement, found a very large toad under all that animated dirt!😂

Nice video and, nice to see another "toad person". I've been a toad guy since I was old enough to catch them (long time). Another way to sex them is males have nuptial pads on their thumbs when mature. I've seen some relatively small males with pads though, so some develop them pretty young. Like you, I usually use the chirping first since they do that as soon as you pick them up most of the time. BTW, your male Fowler's is a lot bigger than the ones I find in my area. Right now I have a Fowler's and an American, both females. I'm torn between them as to which one I like better. The Am is prettier and more docile but, the Fowler's is more active in the day time and doesn't hide as much. She likes to bask for a while when the lights come on and tends to sleep out in the open. The Am disappears as soon as there's a hint of daylight. The Fowler's feistiness is kinda cute tho. She's pretty also, just not as pretty as the Am. Right now, my Fowler's is the bigger of the two, but the Am is still pretty young. I'm sure the Am, at the rate she's growing, will pass up the Fowler's pretty soon. Keep calm and Herp on!

Today I was in school grounds and i found a massive toad! It was so adorable and everyone told me to leave it alone. I know I might have stressed out the toad, but it was the size of my hand. I'm pretty sure it was a oak toad as it had a stripe down it's back. I just came for these videos because of cute amphibians :3

Ok so I have 3 toads 1 I know for sure is a boy and another I know for sure it’s a girl but this one named moon who I think is a boy never croaks or anything but the other male never tries to mount moon but moon tries to mount my female and she doesn’t mind at all. Any tips?

Thank you GoHerping !! There is a toad which for some reason keeps jumping into flower pots on my front porch and buries itself in the soil . I very gently dug it out with my fingers and it chirped like crazy = Male ? It is very tame and now has its' own flower pot with nice soft dirt / minus any plant food or chemicals . It spends some of its' time under a bush concealed in dirt and leaves which I keep moist for it . Wondering if you have ever seen this "jumping into flower pots" scenario . frogs have a different skin pH than ours you can only touch them with wet hands or gloves, because if you touch them without gloves you hurt them and their skin burns

Hello. Like your vids! Hey, I have 2 Southern Toads and one is a presume male and one female. Does the female eat more than males? My male is so shy that he never eats for me. He hides all the time or jumps away. The female eats more readily. Also, I never see mine in the water dish or see poop which concerns me. Any info. would be appreciated. Thx

The first time I tried to pick up my toad and he chirped I was so surprised cuz I only ever had female toads before and I didn't know what sound they made (I knew males make noise though)

how long does it take them to mate anyway? i saw a pair latched on for hours and nothing seemed to happen. by the way that's an interesting way to tell by the color under their neck, I've never heard that

@GoHerping caught two wild american toads, neither chirp (yet?), i tried lifting them to make them chirp like in the video, neither said anything. Then checked their chins, chins look like their belly, so two females? One sprayed some water on me after I checked, hope he/shes ok. Will females mount other toads? one Toad mounted the other one when I had them in a clean trash can for transport, but they werent lined up correctly for actual sex.

I can’t be sure if my female is actually male because she’s much bigger than my for sure male and I believe is the same color on the bottom of her head but she chirps sometimes when I handle her

I brought a huge toad home after finding her upside down in the road, barely reacting to me. The next day he was eating crickets like a boss, chillin in his water dish, and nestling down in the soil. I have had him about 5 weeks, and it's going to start getting cold. Should i keep him, return him to where i found him (a road by townhomes where they chemically treat the lawn and mow weekly) or let him go in a wooded yard that never gets mowed- it's full of bugs, stays fairly moist and backs up to a forest with a stream. Seems like toad paradise. I love having him here and although I have taken him outside to frolic a few times, I worry he will not get enough exercise and also that he could get depressed. You seem to know a lot for your age; what do you think us best?

my toad has the same color of neck as it's belly but it makes noise when i touch it or pick it up how can i tell

what if they don't chirp whe I pick them up, but I heard them chirp before , are quite small but don't have a blueish trinagle on their throat. like my new friend Pickle because He looked like a pickeler frog when He was younger.
