One of the many things I LOVE ❤❤❤ about your videos Gaynor is their scattered nature! Scattered perhaps, yet there’s a continuity still. It feels a bit like I’ve spent the week with you rather than having a formal controlled visit. The variety of shots, insights and experimentation make me want to come back to each video several times (what did Gaynor do there? What did she say? Who did she reference?). All of this to say you are the best part of dull mornings when I’m trying to come to life and allowing my coffee to work it’s magic. Please continue to share as the breath of fresh air you are! P.S. Loved the Richard Butler video especially when he said (and I paraphrase) “you get a half-dozen paintings that you like and suddenly you recognize something about yourself….”

Thank you again, Gaynor. I really enjoy how eclectic and wide-ranging your videos are, the way you interweave experimentation and process with, for example, a nod to art-history, books, art visits and other resources … it’s all so helpful …different ways into creativity like so many colourful threads to follow. My Best wishes 😊

Thank you so much for answering about mark making. It will be easier to relax about it and not limit oneself thinking it’s childish. A while back I did a little experimental neurographic art. Thought grandson might enjoy that, but his response was that it looked like something only adults could do. At what point in life do we start to limit ourselves? And why? It’s boiling hot here. As much sun as you could ever hope for

Hi Denise, I so wanted to mention you by name but hadn't asked your permission ! I loved your question because I think its one that many can relate to. I had to have a look at Durban on the world map, are you near the coast ? 🥰

@@gaynorpattle hi Gaynor. You don’t have to ask me permission, I’m not fussed about stuff like that. I’m living about 10 kms from the actual coast of Durban. We have a large garden, two cats and a rescue dog.I’m 75 and started painting 3 years ago although I did get an O level (my only one ) in art back in 1963. We worked mostly in charcoal and pen and ink at our school. I wanted to go to art school but I am the eldest of 3 girls so fat chance of that. The youngest one got to go to college. On the plus side, I never had hand me downs. , I’m so enjoying your videos, it feels like a chat with a good friend so please don’t change your style. The home made art journal is almost completed so ready to roll. Learning bookbinding was really enjoyable as I could choose the paper weight

@@gaynorpattle no need to ask for permission. We live about 10 kms inland from the beach. It’s very different to British beaches, the sand is loose and soft. About another 10 kms are the 1000Hills which is a local beauty spot. As you may imagine, it’s very hilly. I’m 75 and took up painting 3 years ago although I did do art at school and got one GCE “0” level in ART!!

@@guitardee1 Life is funny.....all I wanted to do in school was art but that class was denied because it was over subscribed !!! When working part-time and when my children when to university, I spent 5/6 years getting a Fine Art Degree. I didn't 'grow' from that experience but perhaps, like you, I feel that now the time is so right and all that art just wants out 😍

Mark Chagall! I’m embarrassed to say that I had not heard of him (although I think you mentioned him again in one of your more recent videos) . Spooky - The Seventh Son by Sebastian Faulks. Currently reading it. P171, who is mentioned - Chagall!! 🤦‍♀️ I love the look of the stain glass windows in the chapel. Now added to my list of places to visit! Journals - you used to be able to get notebooks with a blank page followed by a ruled page. I have recently been looking for them without success, for the same reason, don’t like drawing on ruled paper! I’ll keep looking! I hope your recent exhibition has been a great success and not too exhausting ❤

@@gaynorpattle if you enjoy Sebastian Faulks then yes, I definitely recommend it. However, whilst set in the future, it is quite disturbing and certainly thought provoking . Apart from the brief mention of Chagall on P171 the book is based on science not art! 😀

“If I’m watching” ………Yes of course I am watching😂😂😂😂 As I’ve said before I absolutely love your videos, and they are getting more and more interesting week by week. Two points this week. Have you thought about an A5 travellers style notebook with various paper inserts, or making your own with intermittent lined/sketch paper. They slip in a cover under an elastic, and can be pulled out to travel with, leaving the cover behind. The second thing is I am going to suggest a tour of your studio, showing how you organise, and more about your work areas/tools/materials etc😂 Cheeky I know. I’m jealous that you seem with journals/sketchbooks etc and the cabin to have this artist thing sorted. 😂 I wish! Your Marc Chagall and Richard Butler references were really interesting too. Love it all. Thank you Gaynor. 💐

So grateful for your kind support🥰

Adding marks over marks...starting to make sense ... the interactions leads to thinking differently. Frees up the mind like going on an adventure that leads to connections seen with each movement. Shapes R a handicap...need more understanding about composition.. . Color combos. The writing just isn't going well ....seems like being on the same track and going in circles. Ann
@gaynorpattle
@gaynorpattle Год назад
Hello Ann, if I get that feeling of being on the same track and going in circles, it usually means I've got to risk a bit more ! At this stage I take a really big brush and put an outrageous mark through the whole thing ..... then I have to respond to that ! Try thinking about opposites....the opposite in terms of shape and colour - warms against cools. A BIG help is to work on more than one thing. Allow the same amount of time of each painting, working in rotation. Keep Going 🥰

My answer to the scribble/mark making question is the following. My brother and youngest daughter are realistic and detailed artists and their art is incredible. I on the other hand am not. To make a comparison, my brother is a perfectionist on canvas as well as in his home and in his handwriting, dot the eyes cross the t's and write on the lines. I am the opposite. I am a handwriting analyst as well as an artist so what does this all say about my brother and my differences. If my brother and I had a choice between walking on a tightrope or a bungee jump, he would choose a tight rope, I would choose to bungee jump. I like taking risks he doesn't. I am adventurous and have travelled around the world he has not. Scribble and mark making is the loosening up of ideas in the brain that have not yet been expressed.

The stained glass windows by Chagall are stunning and different to the type usually found in churches. I just watched the Richard Butler video you recommended - he is very talented. It is interesting that his daughter is his muse. I wonder how she feels about that? My Dad painted me in oils/acrylic? when I was eleven complete with long face, greasy hair and deep nose to mouth lines and I have had an inferiority complex ever since! Your art studio looks wonderful with your artwork on display. I hope you get a chance to play in your newly painted note/sketch book. Have a great week Gaynor. 😊

Hi again@@gaynorpattle , the reason I asked is that I've used children board books for painting, and sand the pages before I gesso and paint, and was wondering if the sanding was actually a necessary step. So thank you for your reply, and the answer to my question is to keep on with the sanding 🙂. I love this community. So much information and help is gleaned from each other.
