What's on Offa? - Offa's Dyke Path - Part I, Sedbury to Chepstow

On Saturday 5th June I set off on my journey, catching the train to Chepstow with plans of hiking the Offa's Dyke Path south to north.
This film is the first instalment of my journey seeing me arrive on the train and getting to the start of the trail on the year of it's 50th birthday, from there I make the short 2.5 mile trek back into Chepstow and have a quick wander around the town.
My plan was to arrive on the Saturday and just tick off a few miles in the afternoon and then do the rest in a further 10 days. You will find out how I got on if you watch the films.
All I will tell you is that I had amazing weather throughout and it is blooming hilly.

I grew up in Chepstow. Interesting to see how it has changed over the last 20 years. Where you stayed used to be the Castle View hotell

I can imagine it will have changed a bit. Certainly got a view of the castle from the room I was in 👍🏼

Just went down to Chepstow as it’s only an hour for me to do this little bit, god wished I hadn’t 😂 just lots of overgrown nettles down the back of housing estates 😂 I go back to Chepstow in a month.

Great video and helpful for my walk i am planning when i can get 3 mo ths off work and travel to uk. Plotting a route from Lands End to John o Groats using south west coast path to Bristol, over bridge then this route to Prestatyn. Want to include the complete Pennine way so trying to find a footpath from Prestatyn to Edale with as little road walking as possible which is a challenge to plot easily.

Oh wow, best of luck with that challenge. I’ve looked at LEJOG and would love to do the walk, I think it’ll be a few years before I get the chance to go for it though. I’m contemplating the West Highland Way next year, I know a lot of people take that in whilst doing LEJOG too. I’d love to know how you get on when you get the chance to come over and do it.

@@pipes-hikes the route i thinking takes in West Highland way, there is a rpute from Kirk Yetholm across to Glasgow, then instead if taking the path across to the east towards Inverness after Fort William, i was thinking if doing the complete Cape Wrath trail then the last 90 miles along the top coast, where there doesnt seem to be a path, but as its eady access over the hills then it should be possible. I think i have found a route from Presatyn to Edale using some of the canal towpaths from chester around Manchester and down that way

Nice start. I bet after you leave the town it gets really interesting. Is everything pretty much back to normal since last year?

Yes I think it starts to get better with the first real views which come to the end of the first full day. Though for me the third full day (so part 4) was where it really started.

Hi David. I am using the Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Solar. It is the middle sized one of them, I only have small wrists so thought the larger 6X would look ridiculous. But I wanted the ‘Pro’ version to be able to add the maps.

Sorry to bombard you with questions but what's the route graphic you use at the end, it's gives a really good visualisation of your walk. 🙂

@@davidedwards4707 not a problem. That is done using OS Maps online software. I pay a yearly subscription (somewhere round £20) but think it’s worth it for the amount I use it. Once you have created a route (or found someone else’s) you can view the “fly-over”. I just then record it from the laptop and add it to the vids. I think you get a weeks free trial with the software. I find it so easy to plot routes on there. If you use the OS Maps app too, any route that you plot and save online, will automatically sync with the app if you use maps on a phone.

Hi Des, I got it from here offasdyke.org.uk/product/offas-dyke-path-passport-pasbort-llwybr-clawdd-offa/ but I think you can also get them from the advice centre near the castle in Chepstow.
