I started the F45 8 week challenge last October and that got me out of the house and into the gym. I was pretty overweight and across the 8 weeks I lost 21kg of body fat and put on 6kg of muscle (according to the body scan). After a few more months I wasn't seeing much more change (training 4 or 5 times a week, but not calorie restricting) and it was getting repetitive. F45 was good preparation for Crossfit. I came into Crossfit much lighter, fitter and stronger (not ripped, but no longer obese). There is so much technique to learn in Crossfit, not only are you challenged to get fitter and stronger, but also more flexible and coordinated. It's not just about training, there are many new skills to learn.

I love to learn & Crossfit really fulfills that need for me. I also dislike being cheered on! I love to ask questions and improve my technique and get fit and stay fit at the same time. I can work out with my daughter and loads of young ‘uns ... and at 63 years old I find that wonderful! CrossFit for the win!

Its been fun looking at the data and testing different nutrition/workouts to see how it registers strain and recovery. Every time I coach a class it thinks I worked out!

Thanks for sharing your view on the topic. I'm starting as a trainer next week and even though much of your advice leads to similar conclusions compared to what we learned in trainers academy, it is often from a totally different perspective which improves my understanding of what good training should be like even further. Got any non-generic advice for an upcoming coach? What was the most important thing you learned or did wrong when teaching your first classes?

You can only help those who are willing to help themselves. You are a guide in group classes, not a hand holder. Private training is for teaching, group classes are for reminding and general guidance.

I think you lost the most important component of CrossFit - the community! I really think of my CrossFit buddies as extended family. Yeah, the intellectual challenge is awesome, but that is not the heart of CrossFit.
