Thanks for the shoutout, 12tone! 😄 *Fact:* I'm autistic as well. Originally, it was diagnosed as Asperger's Syndrome, but thanks to the newest DSM, it's just ASD now. Oh, well. Still myself. 😊

omg omg sorry im. okay i just recently found out i'm autistic, and have a very special relationship with music, i've previously felt i've just been so weirdly obsessed and immersed and weird about it compared to even other music fans who dont really get "into" it and can't yelp but analyze all aspects.... but .. it's comforting and encouraging to feel a "kindred spirit" with you in that way, apart from just being music geeks lol. we all have different experiences with sensory shit, like background music is personally kind of hit-and-miss for me but mostly heavenly and an escape when dealing with a world that's constantly hard to understand, but i also have really weird strong personal connections and.. emotional responses that are hard to understand internally but also give an external reference point that i can compare my life to and fixate on, a big example of this is my "theme album" of Green by R.E.M. Beyond that, realizing that my own admittedly limited musical exploration is a form of stimming is .. liberating to realize and take pride in? and it's just so fun to play around with musical ideas and expression and as a person currently struggling with understanding how to go about life with my quirks and such, along with a truly deep appreciation (special interest!!!) with music, musical elements, certain artists/bands i fixate on... it's another way to motivate myself. i know this video was minimally about autism but overall, thanks for being such a great inspiration and educator. (sorry about the infodump! maybe i should make vids of my own someday) love you 12tone, thanks for all you do. with my limited resources, videos like yours are one of the few ways i can try to educate myself and understand my own personal philosophy about music. it can be such a deep personal part of life.

I'm glad I'm not the only music-loving autistic person who hates background music. It really feels like the imposition of someone else's mood and preferences on a crowd of diverse minds and tastes. I love all sorts of music and I can see times and places where the practice makes sense, like calming, peaceful music in hospitals and dentist offices, but in general it makes me want to put on headphones and listen to my own soundtrack.

I don't mind background music, but when I worked at a grocery store it drove me nuts to hear the same songs played over and over again. And especially when they played "let it go" in the midst of august.
@AmandaKaymusic
@AmandaKaymusic 6 лет назад
I prefer active listening. I feel passive listening (background music) can influence what I play. It is also often music I am challenged to appreciate. You are what you hear, in a way, with music and all I hear does change how and what I play. I prefer to retain control when possible and choose what I listen to then listen actively. It can make me a poor dinner guest at a venue that has a live musician as I will usually be draw to listen to them rather than partake in the conversation.
@KiraFriede
@KiraFriede 6 лет назад
I tend to get distracted by this as well. Especially when it's a piano player and I recognize the song they are playing. It also depends on the loudness of the music and the purpose. If it's just calm and not really outstanding or supporting a video, I am totally okay. In fact, I'm desperately searching for a background music for a video on another channel right now
@AmandaKaymusic
@AmandaKaymusic 6 лет назад
I get told my compositions are great background music often. I also get lots of odd gigs where that is what I am there for like art launches or as foyer music for short film festivals. I do prefer playing intimate gigs for musical audiences who listen intensely and comment wisely but who doesn't? If you are interested I have a few songs up to stream on Reverbnation. If you are interested in any of my tunes drop me a line k@kmusic.com.au www.reverbnation.com/musicalamandakay?profile_view_source=header_icon_nav

Thank you for the offer. Unfortunately I can only use instrumentals since I'm talking over it. And I was thinking about calm piano music, so a totally different approach. But I will bookmark the site, the songs are great, just not for my purpose.

Wow, it's so nice to meet someone whos favourite key is also D minor. I love it, it sounds so lovely. And it's basically the only key I can properly improvise in on piano. No matter what key I try to start in, I always end up in D minor.

Thanks for having me on Cory and thanks for the shout out! Your answer to Zac’s question about musical complexity also reflects how I feel about fine art. A painting doesn’t necessarily have to complex in composition or be done with incredible technically skill to be good. But often a great artwork is done by someone who is familiar with visual principals and is capable of creating something technically complex. Anyway - can’t wait to see you at vidcon!!!

As a fellow D Minor fan and person on the autistic spectrum who likes the more obscure and mathematical side of music, this might well be one of my favourite and most relatable channels for me on RU-vid. PS: D Minor - It’s nice and dramatic, relatively familiar to the uneducated who aren’t aware of any of the black notes yet still being interesting, easyish to play, etc.

As a fan of hip-hop who is not at all pleased with what the genre has turned into (what with mumble rap and all) I thought Damn. was a breathe of fresh air. The lyricism, sampling, construction, a long with the delivery and flow of Kendrick is, to me, an example of the very best of what hip-hop can be breaking through a lot of the garbage we have today.

Question for your next Q&A, or maybe a song analysis prompt - your choice: To this day, "Anna Begins" by Counting Crows is the only studio recording I've ever heard that gave me chills during my first listen. I was 15 and non musical then, and it still has the same effect now that I'm 30 and have studied composition and have refined my ear. Does the song just connect with me or is there something exceptionally frisson inducing in the harmony? Furthermore, do you believe one's chills (or frisson) can be effected by changes in age/ear training/etc, or does that get sort of locked in with musical taste?

I have an AXiS-49 MIDI controller which implements the chords as triangles idea in a physical form. It is quite funny tool to compose chord progressions and melodies with. The problem (or the feature) is the traditional scales are not as easily visible as they would be on a piano keyboard, so the results sometimes require a bit work to fit e.g. into a typical functional harmony piece.

I honestly don't use that system with the triangles, my system is more of a web. Here are the motions that correspond to a line in the web: Parallel major/minor Relative major/minor Subdominant Dominant So if I wanted to know how far A major is from F major, I just travel through the web and it is 3 steps away at the minimum A major -> D major -> D minor -> F major This route here is also 3 steps: A major -> A minor -> C major -> F major So this gives me a way to glance at possible modulations to any given key from any other given key like C minor to Bb major for instance. In fact to modulate from C minor to Bb major I just need 2 modulation steps, 1 to G minor and the other to Bb major.

I love how the concept of music can be extremely simple, yet there are SO MANY options. Everything from simple Acapellas like 'Hide and seek' by Imogen Heap, utilizing a vocoder and a couple effects to songs like Enya's 'Boadicea' utilizing dozens of vocal only tracks in mixing, resulting in a deeper, more surrounding sound.

I don't have 1 single favorite key but I have a favorite major and a favorite minor. My favorite major is Bb major for obvious reasons(my first compositions are in Bb major, I commonly improvise in Bb major even if I am for example writing a G major piece. I can transpose from 1 key into another easily and Bb major just has 1 natural fingering unlike other majors such as C major which have more than 1 natural fingering. I am a pianist if you couldn't already tell). My favorite minor is C minor partly because some of my favorite pieces(usually by Beethoven) are in C minor and also I improvise in that key a lot.

On the autism question: I am an Aspie and I know a lot of other people who are also autistic. I think I can safely say that all those I know that have expressed an opinion on background music (which I think might actually be all of them but if not, then most) would agree with what you said here. We all get annoyed by it to varying degrees even when we might actually like the specific music being played. I think it's something to do with our sensory reactions. In my case I struggle when there's a crowd because the increased audio input makes it very hard for me to focus on a particular source, even if it's somebody saying something that's fascinating. Add in background music and my brain is now trying to process lots of voices AND think about music and I get overloaded. I might be a particularly extreme version of that but I think something similar is experienced by all my autistic acquaintances and friends.
@12tone
@12tone 6 лет назад
Yeah, I think it largely comes down to an inability to shut the information out when I don't want it. Like, sure, it's a good song but I'm trying to have a conversation with my friend and I can't do that if I have to also track the entire compositional structure of Carry On Wayward Son or whatever.

I've never understood how people can ignore background music in stores. It just makes me want to get out of there not buy more stuff! I'm even more amazed that there are people out there who collect vintage "elevator music". The only time I ever heard decent BG music was when I was working at the the Franklin Institute Science Museum way back in the 1970's. One exhibit had a cart tape playing three or four tracks from David Brubeck's Take Five along with Wendy Carlos' version of the Allegro from Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.4 in G major. I'm pretty sure they didn't license the music but it sure made spending slow time there bearable.

Hi. I'm a new follower, and fellow composer/theorist. I've spent the last few weeks watching almost every video you made....kinda. LOL! Anyhow. I have some questions for you. I love your "theory of" videos a lot, and I don't think I've seem them all, so, you might already have them in your archive. but, I've been looking for a good video explaining the music of Carl Stalling. I mean, he has his own style, but I'm sure there is more to it, you know? I know there are some classical composers that he borrowed from, as well. Things like that. Just something explaining his music, kinda like how you explain music. :) Also, I'd love to find a video about the theory of writing a musical...well...the songs, at least. I currently write music for TV, short films, and concert hall, but I've recently been asked to work on a musical...and I have NO IDEA where to begin. Hahaha. Anyhow. If you know of anyone who has videos like this, or if you do, let me know. If not, maybe these are TWO good ideas for your next videos?? :) Thanks in advance.

To me, I feel that Ionian is a lot more stable than Lydian. When I’m in Lydian and I try to resolve to the tonic, it always ends up sounding so bright that it’s not even stable anymore. It’s almost as if it sounds “too good to be true.” And thus, my ears have a hard time believing that the Lydian note is the tonic.

@12tone
@12tone 6 лет назад
Are you sure it's in Bb minor? It doesn't look like it to me. I think I'd analyze it in Db, which gives you I-VImi-VIIº-IV, which you can view as like a walk-up from the VImi that gets interrupted by a deceptive resolution to IV before doing a plagal cadence back to I. Interpreting it in Bb minor means you've got bIII-Imi-IIº-bVI, which doesn't really follow any standard uses of functional harmony. If you're set on it being based in Bb, you'd probably be better off analyzing it as a series of transitions, like I talked about in the Four-Chord Loops video (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-djqSL5b-pWk.html ) instead of as a whole progression.

Like here for example, it took a q&a question to get you to tell some of your favorite channels, and you still only picked ONE! If youtubers like each others content, why not shout it out more?!!

If you're interested in hearing some more of my favorite channels, I'd recommend checking out our other Q&As: Each one features a guest from a channel I think deserves more attention.

Please can you do a song analysis of Kiss from a rose by Seal. I just think it would be awsome song to breakdown as Its a RnB/ Soul Pop song with parts in 6/4 with many melodic and rhythmic changes, mainly apparent in the vocals.But also there's a lot of texture changes through out the track in the instrumentation. And the bridge key change and the almost seemless re-entry is so well done.

Tonnetz is pretty cool. I remember seeing it on an analysis of "Take a Bow" by Muse, and it's awesome to see how that song works, visually. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NQ7LkWCzKxI.html

The decision to award Damn. the Pulitzer Prize was an incomprehensibly confusing and bad decision for a number of reasons that have nothing to do with it being a rap album. One is that there were definitely better albums released last year even within the rap sphere, and another is that if you're going to award Kendrick Lamar for an album he released, I think you might have missed your chance.

Yeah, Adam's video addresses that and explains a bit about why it's probably ok that Damn. got it even though (he feels) To Pimp A Butterfly was a far superior album.

Looking at all the comments I also want to be autistic. Making good youtube videos and having a special relationship with music seem to be just the tip of the iceberg of perks. Any tips on how to get autistic?

I like your videos but why didn't you just give Damn a quick listen before making the video?

I considered it, but honestly I think weighing in with an opinion after one listen would just be feeding the sort of shallow discussion that I'm objecting to. The discourse had very little to do with the specific work, so focusing on it instead of the broader question of recognizing hip-hop (and, honestly, non-classical music in general) would've largely missed the point, I think.
