Finally a mic video that makes sense on RU-vid. Big thank you for the clarity of your thoughts! No idea why RU-vid suggest your video only after suggesting zillions of endless and pointless microphone comparisons. RU-vid please start here!

So practical. My eyes are on the Samson G track pro for Voice over and Dubbing and also for Rap Vocals but my budget is tight. So I might hire a studio someday to make my portfolio because the environment, softwares, amp and setup matters too. I agree.

Lenny, I really Love your vids, your engineering perspective is very much needed on RU-vid. Not only do you communicate in a precise, economic manner, but how you treat the overall structure of the subject allows the mind to fully grasp new concepts. For creative and spacey people like me, this is awesome. If you ever collaborated with Booth Junkie, man I'd go crazy happy. Anyways, I have an AT 2020 and sound proofing my walk in closet is my next step, I live right next to a super busy highway. I do have iZotope so not all is lost, anyhow I wish to optimize the quality of my sound... but I don't know what to do. Should I buy an interface compatible with this USB microphone? Or, should I save a bit, and wait to upgrade my microphone to XLR + buy the interface? I can perfectly send castings right now and record some minor projects. But having better quality audio helps a lot in castings? I just wish to say I own a home studio so I could chase bigger clients in the future. I have binged so many techie videos this week I just need to process to make better decisions D: ahhhhh

Sooooooo, it sounds like your personal recommendation is AT2020 mic. Hmmm, I have Zoom H1n which is fantastic for "broadcast" voice but now I need a mic for the voiceover. Wish you channel to grow big!
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
Hi Alex, Yes, I like the AT2020 for a good budget voice over mic. It's used by may VO artists. The truth is that the majority of the sound quality comes from the "recording know-how.' Be sure to swing by my website lennyb.com for lots of good info about the subject. Thanks for watching/commenting! Good luck.

Hi Lenny awesome videos. Thanks. What would be your go to mic for both voiceover and singing? I am saving up for the Neumann TL103 do you think this mic would be good for both? Do you still recommend the DBX 286s Microphone preamp processor? Equipment I now own. 44”x44”x83” snap-studio portable booth. Focus-rite 2i2 2014 MacBook Pro Pro logic. I’m a beginner Wish list: affordable reference monitors. quiet fan with a muffler for air flow to the booth. Ideas or options to better treat existing booth. Thank you Dino

Love your channel. Just curious if you have any thoughts on buying used mics. I see some reall good mics dirt cheap. Or is this too risky?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 2 года назад
Hi Laz, personally, I've done both. If I'm looking at a used mic, I'm very sensitive to how well it's been taken care of. It it's full of dents, scratches, lipstick and/or food on the grill, I usually don't bother. I have a list of preferred mics on my website. www.lennyb.com. (AND ALWAYS TEST ANY USED GEAR before buying). Good luck!

Hey Lenny! Does the mic you recommend AT2020 good for singers as well? I’m looking for one for VO work and for singing VO work
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
Hi Seanna, Yes, for recording. It's an entry level microphone but can absolutely capture good vocal (singing) recordings. When it comes to voice over or singing, MOST the quality will come from the know-how of the recording process, not the gear. I saw one of your videos where you perform a song on the couch. I think what you're doing is awesome. If you want to produce great recordings for voice over and your songs, learn about room treatment, recording levels, EQ, and compression. Each time you apply a new skill that you learn on any of these topics, your next recording will sound better!

finally between an AT2020 and the STELLAR X2 ... which one would you recommend?
@HeyLennyB

Raul, I've worked on audio from both of those mics and I have heard them sound very good. Get both and try each of them. Keep the one you're most comfortable with. Send the other back or sell it. I say this because I will come down to personal taste.

In this are you using dbx 286 ? Or only audio interface
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
I was using all different setups to illustrate the difference between them. When I was using processing in this video, it was coming from the computer software, not the DBX 286s.

Hi, I want to record my written poetry professionally. Suggest me a good audio interface and microphone. But my room is not sound proof. The sound from outside comes inside our room.
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Год назад
Hi @trueshayari. I know this isn't the answer you were looking for, but I want you to know that my effort is only to save you time and money. You need a good recording space to record your voice and achieve a professional sound. No microphone or interface will solve the problem of an untreated room. I have written a post that explains the issue and solution further here www.lennyb.com/blog/acoustictreatment
@jakelondon
@jakelondon Год назад
If you won't have the luxury of a well treated recording space, would a dynamic mic at a similar price point be a more forgiving choice (e.g., ATR 2100 (which is a USB mic), SM57, or SM58)?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB Год назад
Hi Jake, Yes I believe so. However, consider you'll need a Mic Activator, otherwise you may experience more unwanted noise from your preamp from turning it up so high to reach a proper recording level. You may really get some good insight from this blog post I wrote on the subject. www.lennyb.com/blog/acoustictreatment

Hi Lenny, I was thinking of getting a shotgun mic specifically the Deity V-Mic D3 Pro which is generally for a camera setup. I was hoping to be able to swap it out for voice over but also camera work. Do you think the sentiment that post processing can apply to the Deity or would you recommend getting two different mics?
@HeyLennyB
@HeyLennyB 3 года назад
Hi CyberChiggin, I don't have any experience with that microphone so I can't be certain. But I'd expect that it would be fine. I think it's more about the recording space that you're in. I have heard some vlog type voice recordings with that mic on a DSLR (outdoors) and it sounded great. If you used it in a treated recording space I wouldn't expect it to be bad for VO. If you get one, send me a sample and I'll run it through the a VO processing chain and we'll know for sure. Good luck!

God it all seems so complicated. I guess my usb Samsung mic is out of the question
@HeyLennyB

The majority of your recorded sound comes from the room. For voice-over, that means reducing reflections (some describe as echo or reverb) from your voice in your room. Acoustic treatment on the walls, ceiling, floor can reduce/eliminate reflections. A properly treated room will make even the cheapest microphone sound much better. However, at some point you may be competing with other voice-over creators for the same work. That's where the incremental increases in quality start to make a difference. That's when better mics, interfaces, etc... come into play. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching!
