Dude this melee content is CARRYING me through covid rn on youtube. So many of my fav channels haven't been posting, and this has been awesome to watch. Genuinely keep it up, I've loved watching you in tourneys since 2013, and your content is so hype, melee and otherwise. Keep it up dude, much love
If you’re watching an melee discussion video like this, you probably want to be subscribed to watch more of them anyways...let’s give our boy Toph a subscriber boost!
Also I like to imagine a theory where mango and hbox conspired behind the scenes to get hbox to comeback with a vengeance, essentially I think it’d be funny if they established this narrative to build hype and maybe get hbox to have a little hype behind him if he comes out swinging.
Yeah as a fan of Kasparov, I have to admit he’s up his own ass. But so is basically everybody in chess. You need to be like that to succeed in chess and probably in melee. You have to really want to crush your opponents and prove you are the best
It may not be that much related with the topic of the video, but I got here for a recommended video . was really active on the content creator side during 2015-2017, doing fanarts and clips, and have great memories of your commentary along side bobby scar during those years. thanks for those and im glad you're doing well
Randomly stumbled upon your content so yeah THE SYSTEM WORKS! *Subbed* .. Also would love to hear more about your stories through the years, the Hbox one was great and makes me reminisce a little bit so here's one of mine. My friend and I ran into Azen one time at a Melee tourney in Jersey. My friend being a Marth connoisseur found himself hanging out next to him watching a set and really wanted some advice on the Marth - Sheik matchup; so he asked. "What do you think the best way to approach a camping Sheik with Marth is? Should I fish for grabs? or approach with...." Azen nodded as he listened to his long-winded string frustrated questions. He asked a couple of simple questions kind of strung together but I don't really remember the details since it was from probably around 2010ish, but what we obviously remember was Azen's enligtening response... "..Uhh, yeah.." he said - then gracefully walked away. We found out that day that Azen is not a man of many words and "Uhh, yeah" is often the meme answer we throw around 10+ years later.
@@Mannydude96 Nah this is relevant. "Ifs" matter a lot when pointing out the hypocrisy of the community. Your example about Mango committing murder? Yes, that is 100% useless as shit. Murder and Smash aren't related. You just committed a huge logical fallacy.
Kingly told me how high quality your content was and said he was editor. I basically watch all of your videos now, people need to subscribe lmao keep it up toph & kingly
Armada is not the one with issues. He is just a man who doesn't suffer fools, and it so happens that Mang0 has built his entire personality on being a drunken, clowning fool. His devotees are entertained by his antics and try to find method in / justification for his madness, and that's all well and fine most of the time, but not when his fans harass and mob other members of the community (often at Mang0's direction). Sometimes that member is Armada, on this occasion it's Hungrybox, maybe it's somebody else. Mang0 delighted in calling himself a "Mario Kart streamer" and on numerous occasions a wild fan would stammer in protest that he was streaming *insert game* to explain various Melee losses, so perhaps he is the wrong person to talk.
It’s really really nice to get an inside view into the melee scene, especially with all the stuff going on recently. You and HuGS making really really good quality melee content in recent times is so sick. Keep it up.
Toph, you're doing so much by making youtube a big part of your effort for content, and that's hella SICK for melee. Always knew you had the prime, excellent personality fit for youtube and im rooting for your exponential growth for years to come
Love your content. Don't even watch melee, i just like how you talk and present yourself. Would like more content even if they're not melee related but having melee only vids probably help you with viewer retention and the algorithm showing your vids to other people. Regardless keep being awesome!
For real, didn't thought I would watch the whole thing, but man, the way you speak out your thoughts was so entertaining and really well spoken, definitely will watch more, keep it up!
I agree, both tweets were fine and funny...but then it got way escalated after that. With one of the big points being the "juice box" which is an event HE runs so he was going to have Ultimate on his stream regardless because its his job from his sponsor and mang0 recently looking addressing his drinking issues. Again I hate that I have to spell all this out but people just can't read jokes
After HBox's response , Mang0 should have just said lol and ended it. But whatever, I enjoy a good storyline lol. Makes the tourney just a bit more hype so I'm down.
He also told Hbox during the mafia segment during Summit that "there's no under top 30 melee players here, you'll do alright." Which I thought was hilarious but I feel like it fueled Hbox a bit too, because Hbox responded with "I'll see you in bracket." He almost got there too, but he got slaughtered in main bracket.
@@Deepestdrip It was just rough for Hbox because he needed to beat both iBDW and Zain to even get to Mang0 in the first place and they were both playing at their very best and weren't showing any signs of losing to a rusty Hbox in this tournament. I hope this is a wake-up call for Hbox to grind the game harder and harder for the next big online tournament so that he can at least have a legitimate shot at winning it.
@@adudeinthe3756 This is exactly why Mang0 has been so critical of Hbox. If he had continued to grind and not sellout he wouldn't have been in that position in bracket in the first place. His seeding would have very likely been different going into the main bracket (he was seeded 6th, IBDW was seeded 3rd). People can't seem to read between the lines when it comes to what Mang0 says.
I’m GONNA TOSS THE COMMENT UP, AND THE LIKE! And I also wasn’t subscribed and I’m genuinely surprised I wasn’t because I follow on everything and thought I was here! Good call out in the beginning mayne
toph, regarding the ad placement on your Videos: there is this lifehack on mobile, where ads don't play on a second viewing of the video. so you just jump to the end of the video, press replay and no ads will play. to circumvent at least a part of the lost revenue, you could place an ad at the very last moment, so it can't be skipped. love ya
as someone who unfollowed all smashers for the sake of my ADD/mental health, thank you for these catch-ups. siq content. hope to see you again at an IRL tournament someday soon
Go watch some old videos of him hanging out with M2K, Armada's a riot. I think he has some trouble these days loosening up and relaxing, in part because he kind of feels like the small man who nobody respects. It's too bad, he's still pretty much the GOAT and a guy most everyone got along with back in the day.
nah, you're talking nonsense. He can't destroy it. His legacy is still there no matter what he does for the future. Don't know whether you're a troll, tho, so don't r/woosh on me
I just want to say that you are by far my favorite personality/content creator for melee. Melee has been missing this kind of RU-vid channel. Keep up the amazing work and best of luck toph!
Really glad topi is posting vids now, I’ve always enjoyed the more informative melee content channels that do analysis or history and stuff like that. Toph has a very solid form of presentation with everything and excels when talking about melee not only from a technical standpoint but from a social standpoint (from player to player. Anyways glad you’re posting toph. I appreciate it.
Love your content, keep it up and good luck for the #FreeMelee times... Also I couldn't agree more with your analysis of the Mango/Hungrybox interactions. Hbox showing up to the summit pool just now and sweeping after the amount of shit he got and the response to Mango, that was perfect. There is some indescriptible energy to that, I was giggling like an idiot the whole time watching it.
The hard thing for Armada I think is that he got burned out on competing, but loved the community and wanted to stay a part of it. He's never really been able to find an audience in the way that Mango or (eventually) Hbox or Leffen or even PPMD and M2K did, and I think he feels ashamed of that and fears that he might slip away into irrelevance and become unwanted. That bitterness comes out as potshots on twitter, and though he's not fiction or even leffen levels of bad twitter, it doesn't help his situation at all. Anyway, I think after a while he'll figure things out. Right now too I think covid is making him and a lot of people unhappy and likely to argue but that'll pass. Armada's not a bad guy or a toxic personality and nobody worth mentioning has any interest in discrediting what he accomplished. At absolute most some people might say that others achieved more through longevity but I don't think he needs to feel bad that people say that.
I love the channel Toph, but slight suggestion! I think you could've broken this video up into two videos allowing for more digestible content. Two ten minute videos could perform better than one 20 minute one! I dont mind either way, but i think most people prefer 10 minutes or so. Anyhow keep up the baller content!
The one good point people can say is "he won the last one" which at face value is a really good point. But then you notice how in any other invitational in any other esport the winner of the last one does not get autoinvited, they still have to qualify
But then again, "because other esport don't do it" don't mean anything on it's own. The question is why doesn't they do it and does it apply to melee ?
"I don't want to remember Armada as the 'Old man yells at Cloud' guy" "Gary Kasparov isn't sitting around saying 'If I'd been practicing, yada yada'. He has shit to do!" welp... Looks like the way YOU want to remember Armada isn't the way HE wants you to remember him...
I really wish all players have a "sense of appease" in how they play, and while I know that winning is the content and the end all be all, one of the things that stuck to me at the end of the documentary, and the reason I follow melee, was the growth of all the people in the community.
I thought about tagging hbox on twitter, but I'm a smash-nobody, so who cares, maybe u read it. I watched Smash-Summit 7 finals and left the post-match interview running in the background doing dishes - mind you, I'm new to smash (a 21er, as you would call it), and that was about 2 hours ago. Before that, I only knew hbox from his popoff compilations and bigger sets on stage, which usually end in popoffs, too. To be frank, I really dislike them in general and that tainted my very superficial knowledge of hbox. Hearing his position in the summit 7 interview really changed that. They were thoughtful, passionate and humble. They let me gain an appreciation for him, his struggle and perspective. I don't want him do descend into memehood and fall prey to darkBox, moneyBox or whatever he calls his lesser selves. As you point out, Mango is poking the satisfiedBox to make it hungry again, since he's been let down by all other gods, who quit on him. And he is constantly made aware that hbox cheats on their 3-way with ultimate? He better get angry.
Also, it's weird having 27y old younguns worry about their legacy. You're fucking 27, go build sandcastles, experiment with drugs, start a political party or whatever and leave the worrying to the crusty ol' huggies of the world.
Armada used a whataboutism and its very upsetting. He says he wants to distance himself from melee but clearly in the back of his mind melee is all he has. Instead of assuming mang0 changed he just said yeah but what about this and this. Just no point, you can leave the community I see it happen all the time but he's willingly sticking around and making himself angry for no reason. I know the greatness of armada but if i joined the scene in even 2016 I see an old man yelling at a cloud about how good he was. Like when Wilt chamberlian did interviews about how MJ was nothing compared to him, or seeing MJ talk about how the era was so different Lebron couldn't play then. He's going on 30 but is still acting so childish lmao let go homie. Just go speedrun mario 64 and stop tweeting about melee and then getting angry when someone ask you if youll ever unretire.
Armadas main form of solid clickbait is his title of melee goat, I think armada doesn't believe that he can continue to be marketable in the future without that title
Huge fan and new subscriber. My only feedback would be to swear less and that’s just my opinion others could disagree. I was just listening with my parents and they got mad lol.
So mango can throw half his career and not try, but now Hbox doesn’t play melee 24/7 for a couple months and now Mango is melee hitler? Like mangos partially trolling, but... “you are who you pretend to be.” He may want these players to stick around, and this is his bait, but there’s absolutely no doubt what he’s saying comes from a real place and honestly... comes off as a little hypocritical. Saying “it’s a different culture” is a cop out to me.
yeah armada wasn't wrong in responding after mango sploded a lil bit, i think he thought when he said join armada that mango was talking shit, nah he was saying join armada in not playing if you're gonna retire, which is what armada's doing
Honestly I think it all has to do with covid. Since we don’t have access to regular top level melee compared to other years, with the recent exception of SCL, we WANT summit to be competitive, whereas other years it’s mostly been a little bit of a break from serious grinding. Since I, at least, idk how many other people feel this way, want to see competitive melee, seeing hbox not take it seriously feels like a wasted opportunity to push melee further
The thing is, it might not have been the case for competitors, but it was a common narrative among doc kids and spectators that Armada was boring because he does everything right, so Armada was probably experiencing the tail end of that mentality for longer than most other competitors.
