Active Imagination often loses itself in the online spheres and becomes, as Steve (Richards) once said: " Active Fantasy". People focus on daydreaming ( fantasy) for fun while ignoring the dangers of doing so and missing the opportunity of, when meeting something useful (imagination), using the knowledge gained to actually improve their actual, real life. "It took Jung many years, for he was not satisfied with learning to see the images of the unconscious, or even with dealing with them actively in his fantasies. He did not feel at ease until he took "the most important step of all": finding their place and purpose" in his own actual outer life. This, he says, the most important step in active imagination, is "what we usually neglect to do. Insight into the myth of our unconscious, must be converted into ethical obligation”. Steve is pretty critical of Jungians considering, but yes, you're right

Fantasy is the structure of the tale, imagination is the fuel that gives it birth.

Marie Louise von Franz mentions that Apuleius most likely wrote "The Golden Ass" by means of Active Imagination. Tolkien may have intuitively used many of the techniques of Active Imagination as well. Maybe Susanna Clarke in "Piranesi"? Herman Hesse worked with Jung. His "Demian" is so clearly Jungian that one shudders (with joy). What about Victor Hugo? Thoughts/Questions: - Are you aware of any contemporary author using Active Imagination as the basis for writing major - say - novels (250+ pages, imagine .... ! What a life at the edge. God/Goddess bless him/her)? - Why are Publishing Houses (i.e. the representatives of culture) not hungrily pushing more into this direction? I ask for two reasons: (1) If an author managed to grow beyond his/her personal complexes, the next thing he/she will hit are collective complexes (e.g. Thomas Singer); they, however, drive from underneath the long-term future of society(/ies) - more though than short term decisions taken by the ego. It is like walking in the woods without a guide; every step you take is perfectly straight (ego), yet you walk in a circle and end exactly where you started (complex). Those who write by Active Imagination may give society a gruesome warning with their work. (2) I keep that to myself/for private communication only.

I would not presume to understand why publishing houses do what they do, but my guess is that active imagination is too wild and unpredictable to give them the repeatable profits they are obsessed with. Nevertheless, without imagination, you just wind up with stale ego-fantasy nonsense. I used AI as a basis for a LOT of my novel King of the Forgotten Darkness, but I did have to make sure it wasn't just trippy meanderings by using solid storytelling structure and techniques. I think the combination yields the finest material.

@@theimaginarium I agree, art is x% technique with x substantial/large; the Ego has a LOT of work to do. I look forward to the "King of the Forgotten Darkness" being published. It is on my reading list.

Dr. Goodwyn-are you familiar with Napoleon Hill’s 1925 book “The Law of Success”? It describes imagination as the bedrock of all innovation and creation; and how it gives us the ability to combine knowledge and ideas into new systems.
