If I may, watching the video I came up with a little trick to differentiate "lay" from "lie" -- when you LAY something, it means you place it on a surface as a new LAYER on top of that surface. So if you place something making a new LAYER, you should not use the verb LIE, but LAY. Ta-da.
Brilliant!!!!!!!!!! So every night when I lie in my bed I watch your videos and enjoy learning something new in such a funny and fabulous way, afterward and before falling asleep, I lay a few more blankets because it's freezing, if not, I would not fall asleep. To sum up, I don't lie or exaggerate when I say you're a great teacher with such a good sense of humour.
I was explaining when to use lay and lie in English to a Chinese student at lunch. For one easy rule I said you always use a form of “lay” for putting down an object. I said for present tense taking a sleeping position, you always use a form of “lie” (I lie, I am/was lying) We discussed a few other cases and I tried to forget about it after lunch while focusing on studying an entirely different subject. Suddenly a child’s prayer came into my mind and I thought it was a kind of creepy prayer, “Why would I think of that?” The prayer was: “Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep. If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take.” Then is hit me . . . This was the one example in the English language where it was permissible to us “Lay” for the present tense when speaking of taking a sleeping position. (For poetic purposes, one imagined laying oneself down like a object. I think my subconscious was making a joke.

Professor Gideon, Let me continue with lie and lay difficulty for an English learner who studies by his own efforts in not an English speaking country. Dictionary entry 2.. lie v. irregular verb - not telling the truth, lied, lied, lying 3. lie v. ( says nothing about regularity of the verb - intransitive Meaning - to exist Ex. sentence : We have to find out where the problem lies Or The problem lies in the lack of communication between them. If I consult Cambridge DIC., or Chambers DIC. the same problem of lack of precision will occur. Can you help?
Your lesson is good and useful for us as English self learners, thanks a bunch sir! HOWEVER, I have just noticed that you used in the beginning of your video "2 minute" but by the end you said "" 2 minutes", it is quite confusing. But your video still great one, keep it up!
Hi Gideon, many thanks for the post. I really forgot there was a form 'lain'. And this is so far the best explanation of the difference between Donald Trump and and Donald Duck I've come across. It would help me a lot (and probably some other users too) if you have time to discuss different structures of conditional sentences in a video.
Good morning from Greece and thank you for the lessons.I am a teacher in my country too, but not in English. I'd like to ask if you could provide all these lessons through some text, so as we to learn them better and memorize them. Sorry If I have done mistakes in my message. Congratulations on your channel!
Ok, I don't either. I wrote this to you before because someone else teacher youtuber does it putting link which led to text with the subtitles in English each time he videos a lesson. But if it isnt convenient to you to do that, it's ok!
Hi dear Gideon " WHEN I SEE YOUR FACE , THERE'S NO ONE THING THAT I WOULD CHANGE , CAUSE YOU ARE AMAZING ; JUST THE WAY YOU ARE ". Don 't forget that ,ok ? Have a perfect day ,Gideon !!!!!!!!!
Professor Gideon, it is not as easy as you are saying. At least three further confusing points for me. 1. Lie as a regular verb. Not all dictionaries say that to lie meaning not telling the truth do tell us that this verb is regular. Can you explain why? Is it not a problem of ING form? I can't remember the problem now. 2. 3. You have not shown the pronunciation and spelling difficulty of all three verbs. ( I have to consider each and every meaning as a separate verb). 3a is regular lie a transitive or intransitive verb? I have difficulty in memorizing these verbs and using them correctly. One reason is that the lessons about lie, and lay do not cover or basic detail concerning these verbs. The same problem is with the entries in dictionaries.
Lmao... Nice lesson, love this channel.. Really going deeper in the language in a simple, and often funny, manner. What often confuses me is laying in bed vs lying in bed.. but i know it's quite different..it just catches me off guard sometimes.
As an example only: lay down your dirty lies on someone else's shoulders but me. In fact a message to the narc crooks I 'm coerced by...thx😊 so clear. I'd rather stay calm.
thanks for lesson i am searching for a verb list and i don't know its topic it is very hard to explain for me for instance i can say that '' i fly an aircraft'' as far as i know i can't say that ''i make an aircraft fly'' also i can say that'' an aircraft flies'' i am talking about verb like ''fly'' which can be used both way i mean that naturally Causative verbs that don't need make/get/have
Hello In the sentence "When I looked at the bed, I realized that someone had lain there earlier" can "that" be removed completely out of the sentence? I'm not sure about it. Though it was a great video, I always thought that lay and lie were the same, especially when hearing them in the movies. My thanks!
Thank you sir. Appreciated if you tell me please about the British accent of oxforlearnersdictionaries.com I think it’s It’s different .. is it the standard one??!
Yawar Jalal I believe what you saying is true, although there were 2 different sentences in "but you didn't, you lied to me" The first one being " but you didn't" and the second one being "you lied to me" Hope it answers your question.
But why would anyone want to use the verb to lie and apply it to something like putting ourselves to rest =/ I dont understand why a new word wasnt made up
