By far the most common comment has been that using Resolve Studio rather than the free version would have changed the results because of it's GPU support. Hardware acceleration is only missing from the free Windows version of Resolve, on the Mac it is built in.
@TechWeLove

That would be super cool if you could compare DaVinci resolve studio versus DaVinci resolve free for these render and export times. ❤️

Don't think that's true.

@@rano12321 Yes, it's true, free only has DECODE for H.264, however, the Studio has both ENCODE and DECODE hardware acceleration for both H.264/265. There are a few other features that are only available in Studio and not the free version, but you DO get 95% of studio in the free. Good news is, a $295 or so one time payment and you get the updates, I think for life. That said, you can also buy accessories through Black Magic to help offset the software support.

Final Cut is a good reliable editor. I don’t have anything against it, but it’s limited when it comes to motion graphics, and I don’t understand why Apple can’t make it integrate better with Motion. I use Resolve because not only is it buttery smooth and fast, it’s a powerhouse when it comes to compositing and color grading. Premiere is just a dumpster fire I gave up on over a year ago because it’s too cluttered, unstable, and slow.

@DaCarnival
@DaCarnival 2 года назад
Buuut in resolve you can export every clip on the timeline as an individual clip - great for grading and creating proxies, or for dalies exports from a DIT. Resolve is simply much better at both transcoding and exporting - which makes sense as that is it's core functionality from before it wanted to be an NLE.
@JairoCepeda
@JairoCepeda 2 года назад
9:40 Final Cut can totally export a clip from the timeline. We got that around 3 updates ago. You just have to select a range from the timeline with the Range tool and hit export. That way It will only export the range you selected.

I think you misunderstand what I was saying, Resolve allows you to export all the clips in a time as new files with handles on the beginning and end. So effectively our have just the good bits and you can either bring those into another NLE or archive them. In final cut, you just have one finished clip

At the 8:46 mark you recommend going for the M1 Max rather than the M1 Pro for the H.264/ProRes decoders, but both chips have those decoders, it's just that the Max has double the dedicated accelerators of the M1 Pro. Great video though, somewhat surprising results.

I find it insane that DaVinci Resolve (the free version) is beating out FCP and Premiere Pro in quite a few of these tests, that’s super impressive. I am still using the free version of Resolve (on an M1 Mac mini 16GB) and I haven’t really hit the ceiling yet (except for a few features that would be nice such as denoiser). I switched from Premiere Pro about a year ago and I honestly haven’t looked back since, great bit of software! Would be interested in seeing how well Fusion works with the M1 Pro and Max chips, as it is quite slow for most things on the M1 basic chip. Nice tests and great video, Tyler! 👌

Something to consider: the widespread use of high-quality stock footage and images is probably not doing society any favours. All those images of perfectly presented, shiny happy families laughing together may sell Coca Cola, but I think they also depress people. Everyone knows they're fake, false, insincere. But, because we're silly chimps, we still think those fake images are aspirational. That's really destructive. Anyway, back to the topic at hand...

Everybody’s always making videos about what software is faster, what tips to make you a faster editor, do this to be faster do that to be faster… Faster faster faster. Fast has nothing to do with quality. I’m an incredibly fast editor and I could care less about being fast. I care about being good. And besides, the faster you edit the less money you make. Being nuanced and skillful is way more important than being fast.

As soon as you said you're not running the Studio version of Resolve I checked out as it's not a proper comparison then. The Studio version is optimized to take advantage of more powerful machines like the M1 Max. I'm running a 2020 iMac 27" and I can easily playback in a 4K timeline multiple videos of 4.6K BlackmagicRAW. Can't remember the exact number since this was a music video I edited earlier this year, and I had at least 6 full takes of the main song being sung, but as well a few extra snippets recorded for specific song moments and extra b-roll shots. The song started with a long Steadicam 20-30 second shot before we got into the other multiple locations full song shots at different angles... Either way, my old Intel iMac handled this phenomenally months ago. I run the Studio version of Resolve. No matter what it works better than Premiere. I'm not going back to FCP again. Resolve is hands down the best color grading software and none of the others compare.

@@stalman you didnt strike me as someone that would mind a comment like that, I wonder if its automated.

I have bought both licenses, I just felt that to get the same functionality out of fcp you need to buy some paid addons. And the bonus hardware speed editor for the price of the davinci license is nice. FCP wins for ease of use for sure. I am a noob with editing though, so what do I know..

I'm wondering why AVID Media Composer isn't mentioned seeing that it's the preeminent editing system across the planet?

It’s used in the biggest projects but by the fewest people

@@stalman That’s a good point Tyler, if you’re working out of your spare bedroom with a cobbled together system of hard drives and SD cards Premiere and Final Cut are fantastic. If you need an integrated system for capture, play out, automation and information management Avid thrives. Also, their free version is top notch.

Free version of davinci doesn’t use hardware encoding. You need studio to use all your hardware!

That’s the case on PC but on Mac the free version does support it

You can definitely export clips from the timeline in FCPX. Happened to me by accident (I’m thinking you need to have the clips selected and then hit export?) anyway, here is a different solution: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bxTsAyfH0vs.html

Yes, on the PC. The Mac version does not have the same hardware acceleration restrictions

In final cut you can export individual clips, just hit the range tool (R) then drag whatever range and hit export it'll just do that section
