I have a 2013 f150 5.0. Has not been kind to me. 82k miles on it now. Replaced the water pump once already and the second one is now leaking as well. A/C compressor is shot and needs to be replaced since 65k miles. Front and rear suspension replaced. Two ailments as it keeps falling out of spec and chewing thru tires. Rear window replaced on recall. Transmission reprogrammed under recall. Rust coming through both sides below the rear doors. Right rear passenger door lock broke inside the actuator and now we can’t open the door. Still haven’t fixed as the door needs to be open to unscrew the actuator housing. Sync system never works correctly even with updates. Zero issues with all my old fords. Got a lemon with this truck.

So fun to drive tows like a big dog. The programmer made a huge difference. I also have the 3.5, and the power is impressive. With V8 motor, the engine really comes alive at higher rpms. The 3.5 has surprising power at low rpms and keeps pouring it on all the way to the red line. Basically power on tap, at any time.

@@whataboutbob9786 that’s because the 3.5 is a truck based engine, made to haul and pull things. The v8 is a car based engine in a truck, no power till 4000 rpm. It’s difficult to pull a load from the start at 4000 rpms
@TwilightxKnight13
@TwilightxKnight13 Год назад
Agreed. I always had v-8s (except the 4.9L I6 which was a monster) as the V-6s always felt under-powered. I was talked into the 3.5L with the 10 speed when I bought my 2017. The transmission acts a little odd from time to time, but the engine has every bit the power and acceleration of my '02 5.4L Triton and much better fuel economy. I have easily towed a trailer with the v-6 without a problem and hauled nearly a yard of black dirt. Even moved an 1800lb pallet of concrete. The suspension groaned like hell under the strain, but the engine did not even seem to notice.

Mike W the owner actually commented on this video to another commentator, saying it’s not the TBs themselves that keeps failing but the microprocessor that controls the TBs is what’s making them fail. He said for some reason, high boost and fuel while towing just throws the chip out of whack. 150K miles of towing will cause that, his word.

I had a 2.7 eco boost 2015. I own a 5.0 2018 with a Roush cold air intake. Both did very well. The 2.7 had 50,000 miles with zero problems. I traded it because I retired. I wanted a little more sound so most exhaust shops wanted about 1200 dollars. Tuffy muffler cut out the factory muffler and then installed a performance one. The cost was 279.00 dollars and sounds great. Towing a 5000 lbs camper will average 9.5 mph to11.5 mph. Over all I like the 5.0 with the modifications that were done. The fuel mileage is close to the same on both . I am a big fan of FLT keep up the good work. When I get 250,000 it will be time for a video.

You guys are absolutely the best!!!! Thank you for doing this. I understand the variables are as diverse as the people of our nation, however the more samples you can get the better. Over time, there will be trends. One other thing that may be good is to ask people how well their interiors are holding up, specifically drivers seat cushion foam / leather/ material.... steering wheel.... knobs etc. For example, I work in construction and get to see a lot of trucks and vans. There is a clear difference in quality of material from manufacturers in my opinion. My 2013 Ford Platinum drivers seat start looking saggy around 25,000 miles. Our 2016 Jeep Grande Cherokee seats still looks brand new at 40,000 miles. Our Chevy Tahoe looked good until 35,000 and has looked pretty much the same for 380,000 miles. The Ram pickup seats, especially the latest generation seems to be holding very well.

@mike3963
@mike3963 Год назад
You could get some lower gearing installed on it and it’ll shorten the gearing up a little bit to help you get some torque sooner. Ford has always seemed to have really long gears on their trucks and I know it’s mostly for gas mileage but they also have better cooling on their transmissions than Chevy from around the same year so it can handle shorter gears better. My dad knew some guys with the same year model of f150 and Silverado 1500 and they were towing some campers up a mountain. One was lighter, being the one behind the ford and the heavier one behind the Chevy. The chevy’s transmission started overheating so they swapped campers and not only did the ford not sway as much but the transmission handled it just fine.

Good reviews! Both of these trucks are great! I think with the developments in the 3.5 ecoboost it has become a great option. It comes down to personal needs/preference... I’ve had two 5.0 f150s (2012/17) and both have been great, but if I lived somewhere with higher altitude I would definitely go with the ecoboost. As far as rust I never had any issues on the 2012. It was kept clean and coated correctly. Haven’t had the 2017 long enough to determine but so far so good. I was in a slight accident with my 2012 where I was rear ended by an SUV. The truck was undamaged and alignment wasn’t even off. 2017 display and interior is phenomenal. Sync 3 is much easier to use than the older version. The 2012 had really nice interior but it was very basic and I loved it! Drove all over the country with that truck and never had issues.

I guess 3 years makes quite the difference. My 2016 F-150 FX4 with the 5-0 gets about 16.7 MPG and I drive it *hard*. Also only gets regular oil changes. No work or anything beyond that, though I'm going to chuck the stock filter and get a S&B Oiled filter drop-in kit. And maybe an aggressive ECM tune for a total increase of about 65HP to the wheels. Love the 5-0.

jester yeah, my mercury mountaineer had about 1/4th of its miles on the highway. At 125k, when I sold it, it was a pile of rust. After 18 years of nearly continuous foul weather driving in the northeast, parts of the body just started to rust out. Chassis was actually in pretty good condition. Almost all the work done on that sucker was in the suspension. Roads around me could get pretty rough. Stuff wore out. Only “engine” troubles I had were: Rusted trans line leak Only 2 bad spark plugs Cracked radiator (may have been the result of a frontal crash a year before) Damn good vehicle. Awesome power train.

2007 F150 bought new July 2007...currently almost 240K miles. Mine has the smaller 4.6l V8. This truck has been the most reliable I have ever owned period. I had my 1st issue at 225K when it blew a spark plug out, just under $100 to have that drilled out and helicoiled, new coil/plug. Also had some front end work done after that, control arms, sway bar links and alignment. I have never changed the trans oil, never changed spark plugs(except the one that blew out) and I often go well over 5000 miles between oil changes. As far as PM is concerned, I have totally neglected this truck and it still gets me from point A to B without fail! My next truck will definitely be an F150!
